Hymn:
Christian! Seek not yet repose
Theme: Revive Us, O
Lord
Topic: Watch and Pray
Reading: Isaiah 55:1-9
Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that
have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without
money and without price. 2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and
your labour for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat
what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. 3 Incline your
ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an
everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. 4 See, I made him
a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for
the peoples. 5 See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and
nations that do not know you shall run to you, because of the Lord your God, the Holy One of
Israel, for he has glorified you. 6 Seek the Lord while
he may be found, call upon him while he is near; 7 let the wicked
forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to
the Lord, that he may have
mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. 8 For my thoughts
are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord. 9 For as the
heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than
your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Introduction
Christian
living could be summarized with this phrase: ‘watch and pray’. To watch and pray are two sides of the same
coin, and should be the hallmark of all Christians. To watch simply means to be on guard and not
to be taken unawares. However, as humans,
our abilities are limited, and no matter how prepared we are, surprises still
spring at us sometimes. This is where
prayer comes in. When we pray, we are
simply telling God that without Him, we cannot live up to His expectation of
us; we cannot love as He loves us; we cannot be Christ-like; we will not make
it. God sends us
help whenever we call upon His Name.
When we watch and pray, we tune our flesh and spirit to be in one accord
with the movement of the Holy Spirit.
When we watch and pray, we are able to sense impending dangers, trials
and temptations as well as the needs of those around us, and respond to them
through the strength that only comes from the Lord.
Questions/Discussion
1) What does it mean to
watch and pray?
Psalm 121:1-8
1 I lift up my
eyes to the hills—
from where will my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
from where will my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not let
your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
4 He who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
he who keeps you will not slumber.
4 He who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade at your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
the Lord is your shade at your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord will keep you from
all evil;
he will keep your life.
8 The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time on and for evermore.
he will keep your life.
8 The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time on and for evermore.
Matthew 26:36-46
Then Jesus went with them to a place called
Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, ‘Sit here while I go over there and
pray.’ 37He took
with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and
agitated. 38Then he
said to them, ‘I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake
with me.’ 39And going
a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed, ‘My Father, if it
is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want.’ 40Then he came to the disciples and found them
sleeping; and he said to Peter, ‘So, could you not stay awake with me one hour? 41Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the
time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is
weak.’ 42Again he
went away for the second time and prayed, ‘My Father, if this cannot pass
unless I drink it, your will be done.’ 43Again he
came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44So leaving them again, he went away and prayed for
the third time, saying the same words. 45Then he
came to the disciples and said to them, ‘Are you still sleeping and taking your
rest? See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands
of sinners. 46Get up,
let us be going. See, my betrayer is at hand.’
1 Corinthians 10:1-13
I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that
our ancestors were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2and all were baptized
into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3and all ate the same
spiritual food, 4and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the
spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. 5Nevertheless, God was
not pleased with most of them, and they were struck down in the wilderness.
6 Now these things
occurred as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil as they did. 7Do not become
idolaters as some of them did; as it is written, ‘The people sat down to eat
and drink, and they rose up to play.’ 8We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did,
and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. 9We must not put Christ to
the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by serpents. 10And do not complain as
some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11These things happened
to them to serve as an example, and they were written down to instruct us, on
whom the ends of the ages have come. 12So if you think you are standing, watch out that you do not
fall. 13No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God
is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with
the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure
it.
2) What are the lessons
in Luke 13:1-9 regarding watching and praying?
Luke 13:1-9
At that very time there
were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had
mingled with their sacrifices.2He asked them, ‘Do you think that because these Galileans
suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? 3No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you
will all perish as they did. 4Or those eighteen who
were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them—do you think that they were
worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you
will all perish just as they did.’
6 Then he told this
parable: ‘A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for
fruit on it and found none. 7So he said to the
gardener, “See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig
tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?” 8He replied, “Sir, let it alone for one
more year, until I dig round it and put manure on it. 9If it bears fruit next year, well and
good; but if not, you can cut it down.” ’
3) Describe practical
ways that we should watch and pray.
Psalm 63:1-8
1 O God, you are my God; eagerly I seek you; *
my soul thirsts
for you, my flesh faints for you,
as in a barren
and dry land where there is no water.
2 Therefore I have gazed upon you in your holy place, *
that I might behold your power and your
glory.
3 For your
loving-kindness is better than life itself; *
my lips shall
give you praise.
4 So will I bless you as long as I live *
and lift up my hands in your name.
5 My soul is
content, as with marrow and fatness, *
and my mouth
praises you with joyful lips,
6 When I remember
you upon my bed, *
and meditate on you in the night
watches.
7 For you have
been my helper, *
and under the
shadow of your wings I will rejoice.
8 My soul clings
to you; *
your right hand holds me fast.
Philippians 4:4-7
Rejoice in
the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5Let your
gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6Do not worry about anything, but in everything by
prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to
God. 7And the
peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and
your minds in Christ Jesus.
1 Peter 5:1-11
Now as an elder myself and a witness of the sufferings of
Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I exhort the
elders among you 2to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, exercising the
oversight, not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do it—not
for sordid gain but eagerly. 3Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the
flock. 4And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of
glory that never fades away. 5In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority
of the elders. And all of you must clothe yourselves with humility in your
dealings with one another, for
‘God opposes the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.’
‘God opposes the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.’
6 Humble
yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in
due time. 7Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. 8Discipline yourselves;
keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around,
looking for someone to devour.9Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your
brothers and sisters throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of
suffering. 10And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all
grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore,
support, strengthen, and establish you. 11To him be the power
for ever and ever. Amen.

Closing Prayer (Collect
for Third Sunday in Lent)
Father of mercy, alone we have no
power in ourselves to help ourselves. When we are discouraged by our weakness, strengthen
us to follow Christ, our pattern and our hope; who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
