Be filled with the Holy Spirit
Topic:
Sacrificial love
Reading: Mark 12:38-44
As he taught, he said, ‘Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around
in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the market-places, 39and
to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honour at banquets! 40They
devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They
will receive the greater condemnation.’ 41 He
sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the
treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42A
poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. 43Then
he called his disciples and said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow
has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. 44For
all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty
has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.’
Introduction
Last
week, our discussion focused on love as proof of the presence of the Holy
Spirit in our lives. In today’s study,
we will be taking a closer look at the greatest manifestation of love-
sacrificial love. Sacrificial love is
the kind of love that gives everything with cheerfulness and devoid of any
pre-existing requirement from the receiver.
It is the love that puts God and others first before self, and can only
be achieved through the power of the Holy Spirit. Although sacrificial love may appear to be
weak and foolish, it is the greatest, wisest and most significant gift anyone
can give. True love conquers all. Sacrificial love neither implies throwing
away your belongings nor losing your life recklessly, but rather it’s an act of
worship to God through offerings, and helping those in need as much as we
can. In fact sometimes, it is the little
acts of kindness and faith through obedience to the Holy Spirit that count the
most in the sight of God. Sacrificial
love definitely involves the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we
give sacrificially, for it is more blessed to give than to receive.
Questions/Discussion
1. Discuss the different manifestations of
sacrificial love.
John 3:16-18
‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that
everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 ‘Indeed, God did not send
the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might
be saved through him. 18Those
who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are
condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son
of God.
Romans 12:1-8
I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your
bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your
spiritual worship. 2Do
not be conformed to this world, but
be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is
the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. 3 For
by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself
more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgement, each
according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4For
as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same
function, 5so
we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one
of another. 6We
have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in
proportion to faith; 7ministry,
in ministering; the teacher, in teaching;8the
exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence;
the compassionate, in cheerfulness.
Hebrews 11:17-19
By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered
up Isaac. He who had received the promises was ready to offer up his only son, 18of whom he had been told, ‘It is through Isaac that
descendants shall be named after you.’ 19He considered the
fact that God is able even to raise someone from the dead—and figuratively
speaking, he did receive him back.
Hebrews 13:15-16
Through him, then, let us continually offer a
sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. 16Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for
such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
2. Why does sacrificial love appear to be ‘weak’
yet is so powerful?
John 15:9-14
9As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my
love. 10If
you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my
Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11I
have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy
may be complete. 12 ‘This
is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13No
one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14You
are my friends if you do what I command you.
2 Corinthians 8:1-12
We want you to know, brothers and sisters, about the grace of God that has been
granted to the churches of Macedonia; 2for
during a severe ordeal of affliction, their abundant joy and their extreme
poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. 3For,
as I can testify, they voluntarily gave according to their means, and even
beyond their means, 4begging
us earnestly for the privilege of
sharing in this ministry to the saints— 5and
this, not merely as we expected; they gave themselves first to the Lord and, by
the will of God, to us, 6so
that we might urge Titus that, as he had already made a beginning, so he should
also complete this generous undertaking among
you. 7Now
as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost
eagerness, and in our love for you—so we want you to excel also in this
generous undertaking. 8 I
do not say this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love
against the earnestness of others. 9For
you know the generous act of our
Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor,
so that by his poverty you might become rich. 10And
in this matter I am giving my advice: it is appropriate for you who began last
year not only to do something but even to desire to do something— 11now
finish doing it, so that your eagerness may be matched by completing it
according to your means. 12For
if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has—not
according to what one does not have.
3. List some of the benefits of living a life of
sacrifice towards God and our neighbours.
Matthew 10:37-42
Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me;
and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;38and
whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39Those
who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake
will find it. 40 ‘Whoever
welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41Whoever
welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward;
and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will
receive the reward of the righteous; 42and
whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name
of a disciple—truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.’
Matthew 25:34-40
34Then the king will say to those at his right hand, “Come, you
that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the
foundation of the world; 35for
I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to
drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36I
was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was
in prison and you visited me.” 37Then
the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and
gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink?38And
when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you
clothing? 39And
when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?” 40And
the king will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the
least of these who are members of my family, you
did it to me.”
Philippians 4:10-20
I rejoice in the
Lord greatly that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you
were concerned for me, but had no opportunity to show it. 11Not
that I am referring to being in need; for I have learned to be content with
whatever I have. 12I
know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any
and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going
hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. 13I
can do all things through him who strengthens me. 14In
any case, it was kind of you to share my distress. 15 You
Philippians indeed know that in the early days of the gospel, when I left
Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving,
except you alone. 16For
even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me help for my needs more than once. 17Not
that I seek the gift, but I seek the profit that accumulates to your account. 18I
have been paid in full and have more than enough; I am fully satisfied, now
that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering,
a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. 19And
my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory
in Christ Jesus. 20To
our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
1 Peter 4:7-11
The end of all things is near; therefore be serious and discipline
yourselves for the sake of your prayers. 8Above all, maintain constant love for one
another, for love covers a multitude of sins. 9Be hospitable to one another without
complaining. 10Like good
stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift
each of you has received. 11Whoever speaks
must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so
with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things
through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power for ever and ever.
Amen.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
The
Holy Spirit is with us to help us at all times.
He will guide us towards giving and loving as God has done and continues
to do for us.
Closing Prayer
We
give thanks to You Lord for the great example You set for us through the
sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ, an atonement for the sin of the
world. Fill us Lord with Your Holy
Spirit that we may be Your ambassadors of true love and peace in the world
through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.
Amen.
