The Collect for Purity
Almighty
God, to you all hearts are open, all desires
known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by
the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and
worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Collect
Almighty God, your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ is the
light of the world. May your people, illumined by your word and sacraments,
shine with the radiance of his glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and
obeyed to the ends of the earth; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The
Lord takes Delight in You

Reading: Isaiah 62:1-5
For Zion’s sake I will
not keep silent,and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest,
until her vindication shines out like the dawn,
and her salvation like a burning torch.
2 The nations shall see your vindication,
and all the kings your glory;
and you shall be called by a new name
that the mouth of the Lord will give.
3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
4 You shall no more be termed Forsaken,
and your land shall no more be termed Desolate;
but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her,
and your land Married;
for the Lord delights in you,
and your land shall be married.
5 For as a young man marries a young woman,
so shall your builder marry you,
and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,
so shall your God rejoice over you.
Introduction
We know and believe that the Son of God
came that we may have life and have it more abundantly, however, the reality is
that sometimes we feel the opposite. In
the natural it appears as if God has forsaken us, and has failed to keep His
promise to us; His promise of peace, abundance and comfort, His promise to be
with us at all times. Well, the truth
remains that nothing takes God by surprise; we may not understand why go
through tough and/or challenging times but He knows, and will bring us through
them. We serve a God who is bigger than
our problems, and stronger than our enemies; the love God has for us in Christ
is stronger than our weaknesses and shortcomings. Although the circumstances may not make sense
to us, God has perfect understanding of every situation. He takes delight in us, has our best interest
in mind, and will rescue us. He is
delighted to call us His children- works of His hands; He will leave no stone
unturned to bless and make us holy. God
will never withhold any good thing from us, and will use events that may have
caused us pain to bless us and glorify His Holy Name.
Questions/Discussion
1. How do we know that God
takes delight in us? Jeremiah 29:11-14
For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. 12Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you.13When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart, 14I will let you find me, says the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.
Matthew 7:7-12
‘Ask, and it will be given to
you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. 8For everyone who asks receives, and
everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be
opened. 9Is there anyone among you
who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone? 10Or if the child asks for a fish, will
give a snake? 11If you then, who are evil,
know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in
heaven give good things to those who ask him! 12 ‘In everything do to
others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets.
2. Share some landmark events
in your life that point to the depth of God’s love for you.
Joshua 3:9-17Joshua then said to the Israelites, ‘Draw near and hear the words of the Lord your God.’ 10Joshua said, ‘By this you shall know that among you is the living God who without fail will drive out from before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites: 11the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is going to pass before you into the Jordan. 12So now select twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe. 13When the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan flowing from above shall be cut off; they shall stand in a single heap.’ 14 When the people set out from their tents to cross over the Jordan, the priests bearing the ark of the covenant were in front of the people.15Now the Jordan overflows all its banks throughout the time of harvest. So when those who bore the ark had come to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests bearing the ark were dipped in the edge of the water, 16the waters flowing from above stood still, rising up in a single heap far off at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan, while those flowing towards the sea of the Arabah, the Dead Sea, were wholly cut off. Then the people crossed over opposite Jericho. 17While all Israel were crossing over on dry ground, the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, until the entire nation finished crossing over the Jordan.
Joshua 4:1-18
When the entire nation had
finished crossing over the Jordan, theLord said to Joshua: 2‘Select twelve men from the people, one
from each tribe, 3and command them, “Take
twelve stones from here out of the middle of the Jordan, from the place where
the priests’ feet stood, carry them over with you, and lay them down in the
place where you camp tonight.” ’ 4Then Joshua summoned the twelve men from
the Israelites, whom he had appointed, one from each tribe. 5Joshua said to them, ‘Pass on before the
ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the
Jordan, and each of you take up a stone on his shoulder, one for each of the
tribes of the Israelites, 6so that this may be a sign
among you. When your children ask in time to come, “What do those stones mean
to you?” 7then you shall tell them that
the waters of the Jordan were cut off in front of the ark of the covenant of
the Lord.
When it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So
these stones shall be to the Israelites a memorial for ever.’ 8 The Israelites did as
Joshua commanded. They took up twelve stones out of the middle of the Jordan,
according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, as the Lord told Joshua, carried them over with
them to the place where they camped, and laid them down there. 9(Joshua set up twelve stones in the
middle of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests bearing the
ark of the covenant had stood; and they are there to this day.) 10 The priests who bore
the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan, until everything was
finished that the Lord commanded Joshua to tell the people,
according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua. The people crossed over in
haste. 11As soon as all the people had
finished crossing over, the ark of the Lord, and the priests, crossed over in front of the people. 12The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the
half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over armed before the Israelites, as Moses had
ordered them. 13About forty thousand armed
for war crossed over before the Lord to the
plains of Jericho for battle. 14 On that day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all
Israel; and they stood in awe of him, as they had stood in awe of Moses, all
the days of his life. 15 The Lord said to Joshua, 16‘Command the priests who bear the ark of
the covenant to come up out of
the Jordan.’ 17Joshua therefore commanded
the priests, ‘Come up out of the Jordan.’ 18When the priests bearing the
ark of the covenant of the Lord came up from
the middle of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet touched dry
ground, the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and overflowed all its
banks, as before.
3. What holds us back from
living in the promise of God? How do we
overcome the drawbacks?
Isaiah 59:1-2, 9-16See, the Lord’s hand is not too short to save,
nor his ear too dull to hear.
2 Rather, your iniquities have been barriers
between you and your God,
and your sins have hidden his face from you
so that he does not hear.
9 Therefore justice is far from us,
and righteousness does not reach us;
we wait for light, and lo! there is darkness;
and for brightness, but we walk in gloom.
10 We grope like the blind along a wall,
groping like those who have no eyes;
we stumble at noon as in the twilight,
among the vigorous as though we were dead.
11 We all growl like bears;
like doves we moan mournfully.
We wait for justice, but there is none;
for salvation, but it is far from us.
12 For our transgressions before you are many,
and our sins testify against us.
Our transgressions indeed are with us,
and we know our iniquities:
13 transgressing, and denying the Lord,
and turning away from following our God,
talking oppression and revolt,
conceiving lying words and uttering them from the heart.
14 Justice is turned back,
and righteousness stands at a distance;
for truth stumbles in the public square,
and uprightness cannot enter.
15 Truth is lacking,
and whoever turns from evil is despoiled.
The Lord saw it, and it displeased him
that there was no justice.
16 He saw that there was no one,
and was appalled that there was no one to intervene;
so his own arm brought him victory,
and his righteousness upheld him.
that there was no justice.
16 He saw that there was no one,
and was appalled that there was no one to intervene;
so his own arm brought him victory,
and his righteousness upheld him.
Matthew 17:14-21
When they
came to the crowd, a man came to him, knelt before him,15and said,
‘Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; he
often falls into the fire and often into the water.16And I brought
him to your disciples, but they could not cure him.’17Jesus
answered, ‘You faithless and perverse generation,
how much longer must I be with you? How much longer must I put up with you?
Bring him here to me.’ 18And Jesus
rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was cured
instantly. 19Then the
disciples came to Jesus privately and said, ‘Why could we not cast it out?’ 20He said to them, ‘Because of your little faith. For truly
I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard
seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there”, and it will
move; and nothing will be impossible for you.’
Mark 6:1-6
He left that
place and came to his home town, and his disciples followed him. 2On the sabbath
he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They
said, ‘Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given
to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! 3Is not this
the carpenter, the son of Mary and
brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here
with us?’ And they took offenceat him. 4Then Jesus
said to them, ‘Prophets are not without honour, except in their home town, and
among their own kin, and in their own house.’ 5And he could
do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people
and cured them. 6And he was
amazed at their unbelief.
John 2:1-11
On the third
day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2Jesus and
his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the
wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ 4And Jesus
said to her, ‘Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet
come.’ 5His mother
said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ 6Now standing
there were six stone water-jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each
holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7Jesus said
to them, ‘Fill the jars with water.’ And they filled them up to the brim. 8He said to
them, ‘Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.’ So they took it.9When the
steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came
from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the
bridegroom 10and said to
him, ‘Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the
guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.’ 11Jesus did
this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and
his disciples believed in him.
