Song:
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases
Theme:
God’s Steadfast Love
Topic:
The Great Re-awakening
Reading:
Philippians 3:4B-14
If anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh, I have
more:5circumcised on the eighth day, a member of the people of Israel,
of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee;6as to
zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless.
7 Yet whatever gains I had, these I
have come to regard as loss because of Christ. 8More
than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of
knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all
things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9and
be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law,
but one that comes through faith in Christ, the
righteousness from God based on faith. 10I
want to know Christ and the power
of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in
his death, 11if
somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not
that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own,
because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it
my own;but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining
forward to what lies ahead, 14I
press on towards the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.
Introduction
The
Christian experience is entirely based on absolute faith in Jesus Christ. God has called to live for Him, but we often mistake
this call to imply serving the Lord in our own strength. Although we are expected to love the Lord
with all our heart, soul and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves; we
should always remember that it is only through the grace and power of God that
we can live up to our calling. The
moment we take our mind and focus off our Lord Jesus Christ and begin to live
in our strength, we begin to falter and to fail. In a moment of great re-awakening, St. Paul
described all his past accomplishments as rubbish for the sake of what lies
ahead for him in Christ Jesus. No matter
how long or short we have known or served the Lord, He is always renewing us
every day as we choose to keep putting our trust in Him.
Questions/Discussion
1. What are the dangers of loving and serving the
Lord in our own strength?
John
15:1-11
‘I am the true vine, and my Father is the
vine-grower. 2He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every
branch that bears fruit he prunes to
make it bear more fruit. 3You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to
you. 4Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear
fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide
in me. 5I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me
and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. 6Whoever does not
abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are
gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for
whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8My Father is
glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. 9As the Father has
loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10If you keep my
commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s
commandments and abide in his love. 11I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you,
and that your joy may be complete.

Corinthians 4:1-18
Therefore, since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in
this ministry, we do not lose heart. 2We
have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practise
cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by the open statement of the truth we
commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God. 3And
even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4In
their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to
keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is
the image of God. 5For
we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as
your slaves for Jesus’ sake. 6For
it is the God who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness’, who has shone in our
hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of
Jesus Christ. 7 But
we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this
extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. 8We
are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9persecuted,
but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10always
carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be
made visible in our bodies. 11For
while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, so that
the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. 12So
death is at work in us, but life in you. 13 But
just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with
scripture—‘I believed, and so I spoke’—we also believe, and so we speak, 14because
we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus,
and will bring us with you into his presence.15Yes,
everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more
people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. 16 So
we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner
nature is being renewed day by day. 17For
this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory
beyond all measure, 18because
we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be
seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.
2. Describe some of the factors that hinder us
from receiving the mercies of the Lord continually.
John
12:1-8
Six days before the Passover Jesus came to
Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 2There they gave a
dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with
him. 3Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard,
anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with
her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4But Judas Iscariot,
one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, 5‘Why was this
perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?’ 6(He said this not
because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common
purse and used to steal what was put into it.) 7Jesus said, ‘Leave
her alone. She bought it so
that she might keep it for the day of my burial. 8You always have the
poor with you, but you do not always have me.’
Philippians
3:4B-9
(KJV)
If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof
he might trust in the flesh, I more:
Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

3. How do we get renewed in our fellowship with
the Lord?
Isaiah
40:27-31
27 Why
do you say, O Jacob,
and speak, O Israel,
‘My way is hidden from the Lord,
and my right is disregarded by my God’?
28 Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the faint,
and strengthens the powerless.
30 Even youths will faint and be weary,
and the young will fall exhausted;
31 but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint.
and speak, O Israel,
‘My way is hidden from the Lord,
and my right is disregarded by my God’?
28 Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the faint,
and strengthens the powerless.
30 Even youths will faint and be weary,
and the young will fall exhausted;
31 but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint.
Isaiah
43:16-21
16 Thus
says the Lord,
who makes a way in the sea,
a path in the mighty waters,
17 who brings out chariot and horse,
army and warrior;
they lie down, they cannot rise,
they are extinguished, quenched like a wick:
18 Do not remember the former things,
or consider the things of old.
19 I am about to do a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert.
20 The wild animals will honour me,
the jackals and the ostriches;
for I give water in the wilderness,
rivers in the desert,
to give drink to my chosen people,
21 the people whom I formed for myself
so that they might declare my praise.
who makes a way in the sea,
a path in the mighty waters,
17 who brings out chariot and horse,
army and warrior;
they lie down, they cannot rise,
they are extinguished, quenched like a wick:
18 Do not remember the former things,
or consider the things of old.
19 I am about to do a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness

21 the people whom I formed for myself
so that they might declare my praise.
Romans
5:1-11
Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord
Jesus Christ, 2through
whom we have obtained access to
this grace in which we stand; and we boast
in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3And
not only that, but we also boast
in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4and
endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5and
hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts
through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. 6 For
while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7Indeed,
rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person
someone might actually dare to die. 8But
God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for
us. 9Much
more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be
saved through him from the wrath of God. 10For
if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his
Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. 11But
more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through
whom we have now received reconciliation.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
God
loves us with an everlasting love, and desires that we trust Him through putting
our faith in His Son Jesus Christ. May
we live our lives forgetting what lies behind, and pressing forward to what
lies ahead for us in Christ Jesus.
Closing
Prayer (Collect for the Fifth Sunday in
Lent)
Most merciful God,
by the death and
resurrection
of your Son Jesus
Christ,
you created
humanity anew.
May the power of his
victorious cross
transform those who
turn in faith
to him who lives
and reigns with you
and the Holy
Spirit,
one God, now and
for ever. Amen.
