Hymn 519: The Lord's My Shepherd
Theme:
The Resurrection
Topic:
Unity
Introduction:
At the
time it was an extraordinary claim for anyone to make, Jesus says, when pressured
to speak plainly, “The Father and I are one.” In fact today it remains an
extraordinary claim, a claim we now make on his behalf. Jesus, it has been
said, is the human face of God. What Jesus is doing in the world is what God is
doing. What Jesus cares about is what God cares about. God, the one who
wonderfully created everything is one with Jesus the Christ and Jesus is at
once both the sacrificial lamb and the Great Shepherd, the one raised to receive
“blessing and glory and wisdom and
thanksgiving and honour and power and might.” Our study this evening will encourage
us to think and pray about the implications of our claim that Jesus, both God
and human, is lamb and shepherd, and is characterized by a love that overflows.
Reading: John 10:22-30
At that time the festival of the Dedication
took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, 23and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of
Solomon. 24So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, ‘How long
will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.’25Jesus answered, ‘I have told you, and you do not believe. The
works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; 26but you do not
believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. 27My sheep hear my
voice. I know them, and they follow me. 28I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one
will snatch them out of my hand. 29What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no
one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. 30The Father and I
are one.’
Questions/Discussion
1. If
Jesus is both Lamb and Shepherd, what implications are there for us, his
followers?
Revelation
7:9-17
After
this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from
every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the
throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. 10They
cried out in a loud voice, saying,
‘Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!’
11And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, 12singing,
‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour
and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.’

‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour
and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.’
13 Then
one of the elders addressed me, saying, ‘Who are these, robed in white, and
where have they come from?’ 14I
said to him, ‘Sir, you are the one that knows.’ Then he said to me, ‘These are
they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and
made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
15 For this reason they are before the throne of God,
and worship him day and night within his temple,
and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them.
16 They will hunger no more, and thirst no more;
the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat;
17 for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd,
and he will guide them to springs of the water of life,
and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’

John
10.11-21
‘I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life
for the sheep. 12The
hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf
coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and
scatters them. 13The
hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. 14I am
the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15just
as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the
sheep. 16I
have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and
they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17For
this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it
up again. 18No
one takes* it from me, but I lay it down of my
own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again.
I have received this command from my Father.’ 19 Again
the Jews were divided because of these words. 20Many
of them were saying, ‘He has a demon and is out of his mind. Why listen to
him?’ 21Others
were saying, ‘These are not the words of one who has a demon. Can a demon open
the eyes of the blind?’
Isaiah
40.6-11
6 A voice says, ‘Cry out!’ And I said,
‘What shall I cry?’
All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field.
7 The grass withers, the flower fades,
when the breath of the Lord blows upon it;
surely the people are grass.
8 The grass withers, the flower fades;
but the word of our God will stand for ever.
9 Get you up to a high mountain,
O Zion, herald of good tidings;*
lift up your voice with strength,
O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings,*
lift it up, do not fear;
say to the cities of Judah,
‘Here is your God!’
10 See, the Lord God comes with might,
and his arm rules for him;
his reward is with him,
and his recompense before him.
11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd;
he will gather the lambs in his arms,
and carry them in his bosom,
and gently lead the mother sheep.

2. If
God and Jesus are “one”, what implications are there for us, his followers?
Acts 9:36-43
Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name
was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She
was devoted to good works and acts of charity.37At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed
her, they laid her in a room upstairs. 38Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that
Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, ‘Please come to us
without delay.’ 39So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they
took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and
showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them.40Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and
prayed. He turned to the body and said, ‘Tabitha, get up.’ Then she opened her
eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. 41He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the
saints and widows, he showed her to be alive.42This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the
Lord.43Meanwhile he stayed
in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner.
John
13.31-35
When he had gone out, Jesus said, ‘Now the Son of Man has been
glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 32If
God has been glorified in him,* God
will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once.33Little
children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I
said to the Jews so now I say to you, “Where I am going, you cannot come.” 34I
give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved
you, you also should love one another.35By
this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one
another.’
John
17.6-16
‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the
world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7Now
they know that everything you have given me is from you; 8for
the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them
and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent
me. 9I am
asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf
of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. 10All
mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. 11And
now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to
you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that
they may be one, as we are one. 12While
I was with them, I protected them in your name that* you
have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one
destined to be lost,* so that the scripture might be
fulfilled. 13But
now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may
have my joy made complete in themselves.* 14I
have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not
belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 15I am
not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them
from the evil one.* 16They
do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.
3. Love
is the great qualifier, the one word that best describes God. Psalm 23 is a
love-poem. Discuss.
Psalm
23
(BCP)
THE LORD is my shepherd; / therefore can I lack
nothing.
2 He shall feed me in a green pasture, / and lead me forth beside
the waters of comfort.
3 He shall restore my soul, / and bring me forth in the paths of
righteousness, for his Name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I
will fear no evil; / for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff comfort me.
5 THOU shalt prepare a table before me in the presence of them that
trouble me; / thou hast anointed my head with oil, and my cup shall be full.
6 Surely thy loving-kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days
of my life; / and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the
Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall
be, world without end. Amen.
Matthew
22.32-40
“I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of
Jacob”? He is God not of the dead, but of the living.’ 33And
when the crowd heard it, they were astounded at his teaching. 34 When the Pharisees heard that he
had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, 35and
one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36‘Teacher,
which commandment in the law is the greatest?’ 37He
said to him, ‘ “You shall love
the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all
your mind.” 38This
is the greatest and first commandment. 39And a
second is like it: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” 40On
these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.’
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
The
world and all of creation is truly blessed by a God who both created us and
loves us. A love so deep that God is mad manifest in Jesus. God, Father, Son
and Holy Spirit calls us into this unity, calls us into being as God would have
us be.
Collect
O God of peace, who brought again from the
dead our Lord Jesus Christ, that great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of
the eternal covenant, make us perfect in every good work to do your will, and
work in us that which is well-pleasing in your sight; through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.
