For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Introduction

According to Scripture, our Lord Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through Him.  Following the ascension of Christ, God sent His Holy Spirit to all believers as promised, to guide us into all truth; truth regarding Christ as well as God’s purpose for our lives.  Once in a while, we are confronted with decision-making regarding which direction to follow.  Since as Christians our lives belong to God, and because we live to serve His purpose, the choices we make should be guided by the Holy Spirit.  When we trust the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we get connected with the triune God, because the Spirit will declare to us what belongs to Christ.  As the psalmist said, even though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we will fear no evil, for the Lord is with us.  Regardless of any perils around us, or fear of the unknown, presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives will grant us peace and guide us safely through.

1.  Explain how the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth. 

John 8:31-47, 14:15-18, 23-27.

8:31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, ‘If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; ³²and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.’ ³³They answered him, ‘We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, “You will be made free”?’ ³⁴ Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. ³⁵The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there for ever. ³⁶So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. ³⁷I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you look for an opportunity to kill me, because there is no place in you for my word. ³⁸I declare what I have seen in the Father’s presence; as for you, you should do what you have heard from the Father.’ ³⁹ They answered him, ‘Abraham is our father.’ Jesus said to them, ‘If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing what Abraham did,⁴⁰but now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. 14:15 ‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments. ¹⁶And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever. ¹⁷This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. ¹⁸ ‘I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. ²³Jesus answered him, ‘Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. ²⁴Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me. ²⁵ ‘I have said these things to you while I am still with you. ²⁶But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.²⁷Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. 2.  How do we receive guidance from the Holy Spirit? 

Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31

Does not wisdom call,
   and does not understanding raise her voice? 
² On the heights, beside the way,
   at the crossroads she takes her stand; 
³ beside the gates in front of the town,
   at the entrance of the portals she cries out: 
⁴ ‘To you, O people, I call,
   and my cry is to all that live.

   at the first, before the beginning of the earth.

Romans 8:18-30

Romans 5:1-5

Galatians 6:1-10

My friends, if anyone is detected in a transgression, you who have received the Spirit should restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. Take care that you yourselves are not tempted. ²Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ. ³For if those who are nothing think they are something, they deceive themselves. ⁴All must test their own work; then that work, rather than their neighbour’s work, will become a cause for pride. ⁵For all must carry their own loads. ⁶ Those who are taught the word must share in all good things with their teacher. ⁷ Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. ⁸If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. ⁹So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. ¹⁰So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith. 

Ephesians 5:1-21

Conclusion

The Holy Spirit lives in us to guide us into all truth.  May we yield to His guidance at all times that we may fulfill God’s purpose for our lives.

Closing Prayer

We are grateful to you Lord for the presence of your Holy Spirit in our lives.  Grant us the grace to be receptive to His leading, that we may do your will at all times.  We ask this through the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Introduction

For the next few weeks, we will turn our attention to the work of the Holy Spirit in the world.  Some people including Christians are perplexed by the ministry of the third Person in Trinity, viewing Him as weird and incomprehensible.  However, from the Scriptures, the Holy Spirit was sent following the ascension of Christ to be the power behind Christian living.  It is also through the power and conviction of the Holy Spirit that souls are won for Christ, never by any man’s words or wisdom.  The Holy Spirit guides, teaches, comforts and reminds us of Christ’s teachings.  He empowers us to love God and our neighbours; and brings to life words of the Scripture when it is read with a receptive heart and mind.  Without the Spirit, it is impossible to live the Christian life, and to be the light and salt of the world.  In this study, we will discuss how the Holy Spirit empowers us to live according to God’s purpose for our lives.

1. Describe some of the common misconceptions about the Holy Spirit.  When did the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the world commence and what makes the Pentecost different?

1 Samuel 10:1-13

Samuel took a phial of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed him; he said, ‘The Lord has anointed you ruler over his people Israel. You shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of their enemies all around. Now this shall be the sign to you that the Lord has anointed you ruler over his heritage:²When you depart from me today you will meet two men by Rachel’s tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah; they will say to you, “The donkeys that you went to seek are found, and now your father has stopped worrying about them and is worrying about you, saying: What shall I do about my son?” ³Then you shall go on from there further and come to the oak of Tabor; three men going up to God at Bethel will meet you there, one carrying three kids, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine. ⁴They will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall accept from them. ⁵After that you shall come to Gibeath-elohim, at the place where the Philistine garrison is; there, as you come to the town, you will meet a band of prophets coming down from the shrine with harp, tambourine, flute, and lyre playing in front of them; they will be in a prophetic frenzy. ⁶Then the spirit of the Lord will possess you, and you will be in a prophetic frenzy along with them and be turned into a different person. ⁷Now when these signs meet you, do whatever you see fit to do, for God is with you. ⁸And you shall go down to Gilgal ahead of me; then I will come down to you to present burnt-offerings and offer sacrifices of well-being. Judges 14:5-6

Joel 2:28-32a

Romans 8:14-17

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. ¹⁵For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ ¹⁶it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God,¹⁷and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

2.  How does the Holy Spirit empower us? 

Luke 24:44-49

Then he said to them, ‘These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.’ ⁴⁵Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, ⁴⁶and he said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, ⁴⁷and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.⁴⁸You are witnesses of these things. ⁴⁹And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.’

1 Corinthians 2:1-16

3.  What factors can enhance (or block) the flow of the Holy Spirit in our lives? 

Ephesians 4:17-32, 5:1-21

Now this I affirm and insist on in the Lord: you must no longer live as the Gentiles live, in the futility of their minds. ¹⁸They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of their ignorance and hardness of heart. ¹⁹They have lost all sensitivity and have abandoned themselves to licentiousness, greedy to practise every kind of impurity. ²⁰That is not the way you learned Christ! ²¹For surely you have heard about him and were taught in him, as truth is in Jesus.²²You were taught to put away your former way of life, your old self, corrupt and deluded by its lusts, ²³and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, ²⁴and to clothe yourselves with the new self, created according to the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. ²⁵ So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbours, for we are members of one another. ²⁶Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, ²⁷and do not make room for the devil. ²⁸Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labour and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. ²⁹Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. ³⁰And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption.³¹Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, ³²and be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-24

Conclusion

God sent His Holy Spirit to empower us, not just to live for Him but to love our neighbours and be witnesses of the gospel.  The Holy Spirit empowers us to spread the good news of salvation through our words and most importantly, our deeds.

Thank you Lord for saving us; fill us with Your Holy Spirit that we may be empowered to be living testimonies of Your goodness.   We ask this through the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Introduction

“Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they will have the right to the tree of life”.  Discussion regarding living a holy life is becoming increasingly unpopular even within the Church.  We serve a Holy God and we cannot possibly talk about loving Him without discussing righteous living.  There are several erroneous views regarding living a righteous life including that we cannot, so what’s the point.  It is very clear from the Scriptures and our personal experiences that righteousness cannot be attained through personal efforts.  Righteousness is attained through believing in Jesus Christ and allowing the Holy Spirit to work in us towards maturity and perfection in the Lord.  This can be challenging and even frustrating especially when we struggle with the process, failing, getting up and failing again.  The good news is that the grace of God is ever fervent to restore us each time we fail.  Above everything else, one of the greatest ways to show our love for God is through the life we live.

1. What is your understanding of righteous living?  Discuss some of the erroneous views regarding living a holy life. 

Luke 18:9-14

He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: ¹⁰‘Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax-collector.¹¹The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, “God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax-collector. ¹²I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.” ¹³But the tax-collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” ¹⁴I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.’

Romans 6:1-23

What then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? ²By no means! 2.  What are the odds against living a holy life? 

Genesis 39:1-15

Now Joseph was taken down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there. ²The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man; he was in the house of his Egyptian master. ³His master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord caused all that he did to prosper in his hands. ⁴So Joseph found favour in his sight and attended him; he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had. ⁵From the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that he had, the Lordblessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; the blessing of the Lordwas on all that he had, in house and field. ⁶So he left all that he had in Joseph’s charge; and, with him there, he had no concern for anything but the food that he ate. Now Joseph was handsome and good-looking. ⁷And after a time his master’s wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, ‘Lie with me.’ ⁸But he refused and said to his master’s wife, ‘Look, with me here, my master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything that he has in my hand. ⁹He is not greater in this house than I am, nor has he kept back anything from me except yourself, because you are his wife. Matthew 7:13-29

‘Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to destruction, and there are many who take it. ¹⁴For the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few who find it. ¹⁵ ‘Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. ¹⁶You will know them by their fruits. 3.  How do we attain righteousness? 

Luke 18:18-30

A certain ruler asked him, ‘Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ ¹⁹Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. ²⁰You know the commandments: “You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honour your father and mother.” ’ ²¹He replied, ‘I have kept all these since my youth.’ ²²When Jesus heard this, he said to him, ‘There is still one thing lacking. Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’ ²³But when he heard this, he became sad; for he was very rich. ²⁴Jesus looked at him and said, ‘How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! ²⁵Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.’ ²⁶ Those who heard it said, ‘Then who can be saved?’ ²⁷He replied, ‘What is impossible for mortals is possible for God.’ ²⁸ Then Peter said, ‘Look, we have left our homes and followed you.’²⁹And he said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, ³⁰who will not get back very much more in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.’ 

Hebrews 12:1-13

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, ²looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. ³ Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners,so that you may not grow weary or lose heart. ⁴In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. ⁵And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as children—‘My child, do not regard lightly the iscipline of the Lord, or lose heart when you are punished by him; ⁶ for the Lord disciplines those whom he loves, and chastises every child whom he accepts.’ ⁷Endure trials for the sake of discipline. God is treating you as children; for what child is there whom a parent does not discipline? ⁸If you do not have that discipline in which all children share, then you are illegitimate and not his children. ⁹Moreover, we had human parents to discipline us, and we respected them. Should we not be even more willing to be subject to the Father of spirits and live? ¹⁰For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share his holiness.¹¹Now, discipline always seems painful rather than pleasant at the time, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. ¹² Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees,¹³and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed.

1 Peter 1:13-25, 2:1-3

Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed. ¹⁴Like obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires that you formerly had in ignorance. ¹⁵Instead, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; ¹⁶for it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’ ¹⁷ If you invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile. ¹⁸You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, ¹⁹but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. ²⁰He was destined before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake. ²¹Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God. ²² Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truthso that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart. ²³You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. ²⁴For ‘All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. ^2:1-3Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, and all guile, insincerity, envy, and all slander. ²Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— ³if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Conclusion

We love God when we live a holy life through the grace that He gives.  May we yield continually to the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit that our lives will be filled with the righteousness that comes from the Lord.

Closing Prayer

Thank you Father for calling us to righteousness; grant us Your Holy Spirit at all times to enable and guide us in the path of righteousness, loving You all the days of our lives.  We ask this through the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  Amen.
