Empowers Us
Reading: Acts 2:1-21
When the
day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2And suddenly from heaven there came a
sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where
they were sitting.3Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue
rested on each of them. 4All of them were
filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the
Spirit gave them ability. 5 Now there were
devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6And at this sound the crowd gathered and
was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of
each.7Amazed and astonished,
they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8And how is it that we hear, each of us,
in our own native language? 9Parthians, Medes,
Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the
parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and
proselytes, 11Cretans and Arabs—in
our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’12All were amazed and
perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ 13But others sneered and said, ‘They are
filled with new wine.’ 14 But Peter,
standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea
and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I
say. 15Indeed, these are not
drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16No, this is what was spoken through the
prophet Joel: 17 “In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out
my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters
shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men
shall dream dreams. 18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will
pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the
earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before
the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. 21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall
be saved.”
Introduction
For the next few weeks,
we will turn our attention to the work of the Holy Spirit in the world. Some people including Christians are
perplexed by the ministry of the third Person in Trinity, viewing Him as weird
and incomprehensible. However, from the
Scriptures, the Holy Spirit was sent following the ascension of Christ to be
the power behind Christian living. It is
also through the power and conviction of the Holy Spirit that souls are won for
Christ, never by any man’s words or wisdom.
The Holy Spirit guides, teaches, comforts and reminds us of Christ’s
teachings. He empowers us to love God
and our neighbours; and brings to life words of the Scripture when it is read
with a receptive heart and mind. Without
the Spirit, it is impossible to live the Christian life, and to be the light
and salt of the world. In this study, we
will discuss how the Holy Spirit empowers us to live according to God’s purpose
for our lives.
Questions/Discussion
1. Describe some of
the common misconceptions about the Holy Spirit. When did the ministry of the Holy Spirit in
the world commence and what makes the Pentecost different?
1 Samuel 10:1-13
Samuel
took a phial of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed him; he said, ‘The Lord has
anointed you ruler over his people Israel. You shall reign over the people of
the Lord and you will save them from the hand
of their enemies all around. Now this shall be the sign to you that the Lord has
anointed you ruler over his
heritage:2When you depart from me today you will meet two men by Rachel’s
tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah; they will say to you, “The donkeys
that you went to seek are found, and now your father has stopped worrying about
them and is worrying about you, saying: What shall I do about my son?” 3Then you shall go on from there further
and come to the oak of Tabor; three men going up to God at Bethel will meet you
there, one carrying three kids, another carrying three loaves of bread, and
another carrying a skin of wine. 4They will greet you
and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall accept from them. 5After that you shall come to
Gibeath-elohim, at the place
where the Philistine garrison is; there, as you come to the town, you will meet
a band of prophets coming down from the shrine with harp, tambourine, flute,
and lyre playing in front of them; they will be in a prophetic frenzy. 6Then the spirit of the Lord will
possess you, and you will be in a prophetic frenzy along with them and be
turned into a different person. 7Now when these signs
meet you, do whatever you see fit to do, for God is with you. 8And you shall go down to Gilgal ahead of
me; then I will come down to you to present burnt-offerings and offer
sacrifices of well-being. For seven days you shall wait, until I come to you
and show you what you shall do.’ 9 As he turned
away to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart; and all these signs were
fulfilled that day. 10When they were going
from there to Gibeah, a band of prophets met him; and the
spirit of God possessed him, and he fell into a prophetic frenzy along with
them.11When all who knew him
before saw how he prophesied with the prophets, the people said to one another,
‘What has come over the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?’ 12A man of the place answered, ‘And who is
their father?’ Therefore it became a proverb, ‘Is Saul also among the
prophets?’ 13When his prophetic
frenzy had ended, he went home.
Judges 14:5-6
Then Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah.
When he came to the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion roared at him. 6The
spirit of the Lord rushed
on him, and he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as one might tear apart
a kid. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.
Joel 2:28-32a
28 Then afterwards I
will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall
prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall
see visions. 29 Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will
pour out my spirit. 30 I will show portents in the heavens and on the earth,
blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood,
before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.32Then everyone who
calls on the name of the Lord shall
be saved;
Romans 8:14-17
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to
fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry,
‘Abba! Father!’ 16it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children
of God,17and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and
joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be
glorified with him.
2. How does the Holy Spirit empower us?
Luke 24:44-49
Then he said to them, ‘These are my words that I spoke to you
while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of
Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.’ 45Then he opened their minds to understand the
scriptures, 46and he said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the
Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the
dead on the third day, 47and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to
be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.48You are witnesses of these things. 49And see, I am sending upon you what my Father
promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from
on high.’
John 14:15-17, 25-27
‘If you
love me, you will keep my
commandments. 16And I will ask the
Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever. 17This is the Spirit of truth, whom the
world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him,
because he abides with you, and he will be in you.
25 ‘I have said these things to you while I am still with
you. 26But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will
send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have
said to you.27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to
you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them
be afraid.
1 Corinthians 2:1-16
When I
came to you, brothers and sisters, I
did not come proclaiming the mystery of
God to you in lofty words or wisdom. 2For I decided to know
nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3And I came to you in weakness and in fear
and in much trembling. 4My speech and my
proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit
and of power, 5so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the
power of God. 6 Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not
a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. 7But we speak God’s wisdom, secret and
hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. 8None of the rulers of this age understood
this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9But, as it is written, ‘What no eye has
seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has
prepared for those who love him’— 10these things God has
revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the
depths of God. 11For what human being
knows what is truly human except the human spirit that is within? So also no
one comprehends what is truly God’s except the Spirit of God.12Now we have received
not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may
understand the gifts bestowed on us by God.13And we speak of these things in words not
taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things
to those who are spiritual. 14 Those who are
unspiritual do not receive the
gifts of God’s Spirit, for they are foolishness to them, and they are unable to
understand them because they are discerned spiritually. 15Those who are spiritual discern all
things, and they are themselves subject to no one else’s scrutiny. 16 ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord so as to
instruct him?’ But we have the mind of Christ.
3. What factors can enhance (or block) the flow
of the Holy Spirit in our lives?
Ephesians 4:17-32,
5:1-21
Now this
I affirm and insist on in the Lord: you must no longer live as the Gentiles
live, in the futility of their minds. 18They are darkened in
their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of their ignorance
and hardness of heart. 19They have lost all
sensitivity and have abandoned themselves to licentiousness, greedy to practise
every kind of impurity. 20That is not the way
you learned Christ! 21For surely you have
heard about him and were taught in him, as truth is in Jesus.22You were taught to put
away your former way of life, your old self, corrupt and deluded by its lusts, 23and to be renewed in the spirit of your
minds, 24and to clothe
yourselves with the new self, created according to the likeness of God in true
righteousness and holiness. 25 So then, putting
away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbours, for we are
members of one another. 26Be angry but do not
sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27and do not make room for the devil. 28Thieves must give up stealing; rather let
them labour and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to
share with the needy. 29Let no evil talk come
out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words
may give grace to those who hear. 30And do not grieve the
Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of
redemption.31Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and
wrangling and slander, together with all malice, 32and be kind to one another,
tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.
5:1-21 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, 2and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant
offering and sacrifice to God. 3 But fornication
and impurity of any kind, or greed, must not even be mentioned among you, as is
proper among saints. 4Entirely out of place
is obscene, silly, and vulgar talk; but instead, let there be thanksgiving.5Be sure of this, that
no fornicator or impure person, or one who is greedy (that is, an idolater),
has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no one
deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God
comes on those who are disobedient. 7Therefore do not be
associated with them. 8For once you were
darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light— 9for the fruit of the light is found in
all that is good and right and true. 10Try to find out what
is pleasing to the Lord. 11Take no part in the
unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12For it is shameful even to mention what
such people do secretly; 13but everything exposed
by the light becomes visible, 14for everything that
becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, ‘Sleeper, awake! Rise
from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.’ 15 Be careful then
how you live, not as unwise people but as wise,16making the most of the
time, because the days are evil. 17So do not be foolish,
but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18Do not get drunk with
wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit,19as you sing psalms and
hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the
Lord in your hearts, 20giving thanks to God
the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ. 21 Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.
1 Thessalonians
5:16-24
Rejoice
always, 17pray without ceasing, 18give thanks in all circumstances; for
this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19Do not quench the Spirit. 20Do not despise the words of prophets, 21but test everything; hold fast to what is
good; 22abstain from every
form of evil. 23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and
may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our
Lord Jesus Christ. 24The one who calls you
is faithful, and he will do this.

Conclusion
God sent His Holy Spirit
to empower us, not just to live for Him but to love our neighbours and be
witnesses of the gospel. The Holy Spirit
empowers us to spread the good news of salvation through our words and most
importantly, our deeds.
Closing Prayer
Thank you Lord for saving us; fill
us with Your Holy Spirit that we may be empowered to be living testimonies of
Your goodness. We ask this through the
precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
