Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: Pass Me Not, O
Gentle Savior
Theme: The Prophetic
Message
Topic: The Lord
Remembers His People
Reading: Ezekiel
37:1-14
The hand of the Lord came
upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle
of a valley; it was full of bones. 2He led me all round them; there were very many lying in the valley, and
they were very dry. 3He said to me, ‘Mortal, can
these bones live?’ I answered, ‘O Lord God, you know.’ 4Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to these bones, and say to them:
O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. 5Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter
you, and you shall live. 6I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and
cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you
shall know that I am the Lord.’ 7 So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and
as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came
together, bone to its bone. 8I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them,
and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. 9Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to the breath,
prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds,
O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.’10I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath
came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude. 11 Then he said to me, ‘Mortal, these bones are
the whole house of Israel. They say, “Our bones are dried up, and our hope is
lost; we are cut off completely.” 12Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: I am going to open your graves, and
bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to
the land of Israel. 13And you shall know that I
am the Lord, when I open your
graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people. 14I will put my spirit within you, and you shall
live, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I,
the Lord, have spoken and
will act, says the Lord.’
Introduction
The prophetic message
of the cross of Christ is a message of hope and deliverance. Hope that God is with us, both in the good
and the bad times, and that he will deliver us from all our troubles. However, during challenging times in our
lives, it can be difficult to believe that God will come true with His promise
to be with us and to deliver us. He is
God, and cannot lie; we always need to believe that He is the same yesterday,
today and forever, and will do what He promised to do. Although, the situation may look as hopeless
as death (such as in the case of Lazarus), when God declares life, death cannot
hold captive. Whatever impossible
situations you may be facing today, if you take the Lord at His word and
believe, He will make the impossible possible- good health, better
relationships, coming out of debt, promotion, and so on. The Lord always remembers that we are His
people, and will neither leave nor forsake us.
Questions/Discussion
1. In what ways does
God remember us?
Psalm 103:1-22
1 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name.
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and do not forget all his benefits—
3 who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the Pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
5 who satisfies you with good as long as you live
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name.
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and do not forget all his benefits—
3 who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the Pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
5 who satisfies you with good as long as you live
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
6 The Lord works
vindication
and justice for all who are oppressed.
7 He made known his ways to Moses,
his acts to the people of Israel.
8 The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 He will not always accuse,
nor will he keep his anger for ever.
10 He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as the heavens are high above the earth,
so great is his steadfast love towards those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far he removes our transgressions from us.
13 As a father has compassion for his children,
so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him.
14 For he knows how we were made;
he remembers that we are dust.
and justice for all who are oppressed.
11 For as the heavens are high above the earth,
so great is his steadfast love towards those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far he removes our transgressions from us.
13 As a father has compassion for his children,
so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him.
14 For he knows how we were made;
he remembers that we are dust.
15 As for mortals, their days are like grass;
they flourish like a flower of the field;
16 for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
and its place knows it no more.
17 But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting
on those who fear him,
and his righteousness to children’s children,
18 to those who keep his covenant
and remember to do his commandments.
they flourish like a flower of the field;
16 for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
and its place knows it no more.
17 But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting
on those who fear him,
and his righteousness to children’s children,
18 to those who keep his covenant
and remember to do his commandments.
19 The Lord has
established his throne in the heavens,
and his kingdom rules over all.
20 Bless the Lord, O you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his bidding,
obedient to his spoken word.
21 Bless the Lord, all his hosts,
his ministers that do his will.
22 Bless the Lord, all his works,
in all places of his dominion.
Bless the Lord, O my soul.
and his kingdom rules over all.
20 Bless the Lord, O you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his bidding,
obedient to his spoken word.
21 Bless the Lord, all his hosts,
his ministers that do his will.
22 Bless the Lord, all his works,
in all places of his dominion.
Bless the Lord, O my soul.
Psalm 130:1-8
1 Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.
2 Lord, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplications!
2 Lord, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplications!
3 If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,
Lord, who could stand?
4 But there is forgiveness with you,
so that you may be revered.
Lord, who could stand?
4 But there is forgiveness with you,
so that you may be revered.
5 I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
and in his word I hope;
6 my soul waits for the Lord
more than those who watch for the morning,
more than those who watch for the morning.
and in his word I hope;
6 my soul waits for the Lord
more than those who watch for the morning,
more than those who watch for the morning.
7 O Israel, hope in the Lord!
For with the Lord there is steadfast love,
and with him is great power to redeem.
8 It is he who will redeem Israel
from all its iniquities.
For with the Lord there is steadfast love,
and with him is great power to redeem.
8 It is he who will redeem Israel
from all its iniquities.
John 14:15-27
‘If
you love me, you will keep my
commandments. 16And I will ask the
Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever. 17This is the Spirit of truth, whom the
world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him,
because he abides with you, and he will be in you.
18 ‘I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. 19In a little while the world will no longer
see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. 20On that day you will know that I am in my
Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21They who have my
commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be
loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.’ 22Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, ‘Lord,
how is it that you will reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?’ 23Jesus answered him, ‘Those who love me
will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and
make our home with them. 24Whoever does not love
me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from
the Father who sent me. 25 ‘I have said
these things to you while I am still with you. 26But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will
send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have
said to you.27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to
you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them
be afraid.
2. What are the lessons
for us in John 11:1-45 regarding divine deliverance?
John 11:1-45
Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and
her sister Martha. 2Mary was the one who
anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother
Lazarus was ill. 3So the sisters sent a
message to Jesus, ‘Lord, he whom you love is ill.’ 4But when Jesus heard it, he said, ‘This illness
does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God
may be glorified through it.’ 5Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, 6after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he
stayed two days longer in the place where he was. 7 Then after this he said to the disciples, ‘Let us
go to Judea again.’8The disciples said to him,
‘Rabbi, the Jews were just now trying to stone you, and are you going there
again?’ 9Jesus answered, ‘Are there
not twelve hours of daylight? Those who walk during the day do not stumble,
because they see the light of this world. 10But those who walk at night stumble, because the light is not in
them.’ 11After saying this, he told
them, ‘Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to awaken
him.’ 12The disciples said to him,
‘Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be all right.’ 13Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death,
but they thought that he was referring merely to sleep.14Then Jesus told them plainly, ‘Lazarus is
dead. 15For your sake I am glad I
was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.’16Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his
fellow-disciples, ‘Let us also go, that we may die with him.’ 17 When Jesus arrived, he found that
Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. 18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles away, 19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to
console them about their brother. 20When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while
Mary stayed at home. 21Martha said to Jesus,
‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.22But even now I know that God will give you whatever
you ask of him.’23Jesus said to her, ‘Your
brother will rise again.’ 24Martha said to him, ‘I know that he will rise again in the resurrection
on the last day.’25Jesus said to her, ‘I am
the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they
die, will live, 26and everyone who lives and
believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ 27She said to him, ‘Yes, Lord, I believe that you are
the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world.’ 28 When she had said this, she went back and
called her sister Mary, and told her privately, ‘The Teacher is here and is
calling for you.’ 29And when she heard it, she
got up quickly and went to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still at the place
where Martha had met him. 31The Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary get up
quickly and go out. They followed her because they thought that she was going
to the tomb to weep there. 32When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and
said to him, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came
with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply
moved. 34He said, ‘Where have you
laid him?’ They said to him, ‘Lord, come and see.’35Jesus began to weep. 36So the Jews said, ‘See how he loved him!’37But some of them said, ‘Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind
man have kept this man from dying?’ 38 Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a
cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39Jesus said, ‘Take away the stone.’ Martha, the sister of the dead man,
said to him, ‘Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead for four
days.’ 40Jesus said to her, ‘Did I
not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?’ 41So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked
upwards and said, ‘Father, I thank you for having heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I have said
this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you
sent me.’ 43When he had said this, he
cried with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound
with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them,
‘Unbind him, and let him go.’ 45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen
what Jesus did, believed in him.
3. What should be our
response to the message of hope and deliverance?
Colossians 2:6-23
As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live
your lives in him, 7rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you
were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and
empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits
of the universe, and not according to Christ. 9For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells
bodily, 10and you have come to
fullness in him, who is the head of every ruler and authority. 11In him also you were circumcised with a spiritual
circumcision, by putting off the body of the flesh in the circumcision of
Christ; 12when you were buried with
him in baptism, you were also raised with him through faith in the power of
God, who raised him from the dead. 13And when you were dead in trespasses and the uncircumcision of your
flesh, God made you alive together with him, when he forgave us all
our trespasses, 14erasing the record that
stood against us with its legal demands. He set this aside, nailing it to the
cross. 15He disarmed the rulers
and authorities and made a public example of them, triumphing over them in it. 16 Therefore do not let anyone condemn you in
matters of food and drink or of observing festivals, new moons, or sabbaths. 17These are only a shadow of what is to come, but the
substance belongs to Christ.18Do not let anyone disqualify you, insisting on self-abasement and
worship of angels, dwelling on visions, puffed up without cause by a
human way of thinking, 19and not holding fast to the head, from whom the whole body, nourished
and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows with a growth that is from
God. 20 If with Christ you
died to the elemental spirits of the universe, why do you live as if you
still belonged to the world? Why do you submit to regulations, 21‘Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch’? 22All these regulations refer to things that perish
with use; they are simply human commands and teachings. 23These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting
self-imposed piety, humility, and severe treatment of the body, but they are of
no value in checking self-indulgence.
Titus 2:1-15
But as
for you, teach what is consistent with sound doctrine. 2Tell the older men to be temperate,
serious, prudent, and sound in faith, in love, and in endurance. 3 Likewise, tell
the older women to be reverent in behaviour, not to be slanderers or slaves to
drink; they are to teach what is good, 4so that they may
encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5to be self-controlled, chaste, good
managers of the household, kind, being submissive to their husbands, so that
the word of God may not be discredited. 6 Likewise, urge
the younger men to be self-controlled. 7Show yourself in all respects
a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, gravity, 8and sound speech that cannot be censured;
then any opponent will be put to shame, having nothing evil to say of us. 9 Tell slaves to be
submissive to their masters and to give satisfaction in every respect; they are
not to answer back, 10not to pilfer, but to
show complete and perfect fidelity, so that in everything they may be an
ornament to the doctrine of God our Saviour. 11 For the grace of
God has appeared, bringing salvation to all,12training us to renounce impiety and
worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are
self-controlled, upright, and godly,13while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the
glory of our great God and Saviour, Jesus
Christ. 14He it is who gave
himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself
a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. 15 Declare these
things; exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one look down on you.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
May we, through the power of the Holy
Spirit, remember that God is with us, always.
Closing Prayer (Collect
for the Fifth Sunday in Lent)
Almighty God, your Son
came into the world to free us all from sin and death. Breathe upon us with the
power of your Spirit, that we may be raised to new life in Christ, and serve
you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through the same Jesus Christ,
our Lord. Amen.
