Hymn: When We
Walk with the Lord
Theme: Peace by
Jesus Christ
Topic: Peace through
Obedience to God
Reading: 1
Peter 3:13-22
Now who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? 14But
even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear
what they fear, and do not be
intimidated, 15but
in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defence to
anyone who demands from you an account of the hope that is in you;16yet
do it with gentleness and reverence. Keep
your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for
your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. 17For
it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God’s will, than
to suffer for doing evil. 18For
Christ also suffered for sins
once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the
flesh, but made alive in the spirit, 19in
which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, 20who
in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah,
during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight people, were
saved through water. 21And
baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you—not as a removal of dirt from the
body, but as an appeal to God for a
good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who
has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities,
and powers made subject to him.
Introduction
As followers of
Christ, we have peace when we obey God’s word.
This does not mean that we go about feeling guilty whenever we don’t
measure up to the calling of God in our lives.
Rather it implies that we have been set free from the bondage of sin and
guilt, and should not live as enemies of God any more. The Scripture makes it clear that there is
none without sin, but also added that we should not continue in sin for grace
to abound. Our freedom in Christ is not
a license to lawless living as if we have no relationship with God, but to seek
God and delight in obeying His word. Obeying
God can create ‘problems’ for us especially with those who have no relationship
with God and/or do not understand us.
However, when we hear and obey the word of God, we have the peace of
Christ, and enjoy His blessings in our lives.
Questions/Discussion
1. What is the
relationship between peace and obedience to God?
Acts 17:22-31
Then Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said,
‘Athenians, I see how extremely religious you are in every way. 23For
as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship,
I found among them an altar with the inscription, “To an unknown god.” What
therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24The
God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and
earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, 25nor
is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself
gives to all mortals life and breath and all things. 26From
one ancestor he made all nations
to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and
the boundaries of the places where they would live, 27so
that they would search for God and
perhaps grope for him and find him—though indeed he is not far from each one of
us. 28For
“In him we live and move and have our being”; as even some of your own poets
have said, “For we too are his offspring.” 29Since
we are God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the deity is like gold, or
silver, or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of mortals. 30While
God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people
everywhere to repent,31because he has fixed a day on which he will
have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of
this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.’
James 1:19-26
You
must understand this, my beloved: let
everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20for your anger
does not produce God’s righteousness. 21Therefore rid
yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with
meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who
deceive themselves. 23For if any are
hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; 24for they look
at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. 25But those who
look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers
who forget but doers who act—they will be blessed in their doing. 26 If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their
tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless.
2. What are the
lessons for us in John 14:15-21 regarding having peace through obedience to
God?
John 14:15-21
‘If
you love me, you will keep my
commandments. 16And I will ask
the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever. 17This is the
Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor
knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. 18 ‘I will
not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. 19In a little
while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you
also will live. 20On that day you
will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21They who have
my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will
be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.’
3. Discuss some
of the challenges to obeying God, and how to overcome them.
Isaiah 43:1-13
But now thus says the Lord,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.
3 For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.
I give Egypt as your ransom,
Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you.
4 Because you are precious in my sight,
and honoured, and I love you,
I give people in return for you,
nations in exchange for your life.
5 Do not fear, for I am with you;
I will bring your offspring from the east,
and from the west I will gather you;
6 I will say to the north, ‘Give them up’,
and to the south, ‘Do not withhold;
bring my sons from far away
and my daughters from the end of the earth—
7 everyone who is called by my name,
whom I created for my glory,
whom I formed and made.’
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.

and to the south, ‘Do not withhold;
bring my sons from far away
and my daughters from the end of the earth—
7 everyone who is called by my name,
whom I created for my glory,
whom I formed and made.’
8 Bring forth the
people who are blind, yet have eyes,
who are deaf, yet have ears!
9 Let all the nations gather together,
and let the peoples assemble.
Who among them declared this,
and foretold to us the former things?
Let them bring their witnesses to justify them,
and let them hear and say, ‘It is true.’
10 You are my witnesses, says the Lord,
and my servant whom I have chosen,
so that you may know and believe me
and understand that I am he.
Before me no god was formed,
nor shall there be any after me.
11 I, I am the Lord,
and besides me there is no saviour.
12 I declared and saved and proclaimed,
when there was no strange god among you;
and you are my witnesses, says the Lord.
13 I am God, and also henceforth I am He;
there is no one who can deliver from my hand;
I work and who can hinder it?
who are deaf, yet have ears!
9 Let all the nations gather together,
and let the peoples assemble.
Who among them declared this,
and foretold to us the former things?
Let them bring their witnesses to justify them,
and let them hear and say, ‘It is true.’
10 You are my witnesses, says the Lord,
and my servant whom I have chosen,
so that you may know and believe me
and understand that I am he.
Before me no god was formed,
nor shall there be any after me.
11 I, I am the Lord,
and besides me there is no saviour.
12 I declared and saved and proclaimed,
when there was no strange god among you;
and you are my witnesses, says the Lord.
13 I am God, and also henceforth I am He;
there is no one who can deliver from my hand;
I work and who can hinder it?
Psalm 66:8-20
Refrain: Be joyful in God, all you lands.
Bless our God, you peoples; make the voice of his praise
to be heard; Who holds our souls in life, and will not allow our feet to slip. R
For you, O God, have proved us; you have tried us just as silver is tried.
You brought us into the snare; you laid heavy burdens upon our backs. You let
enemies ride over our heads; we went through fire and water; but you brought us
out into a place of refreshment. R I will enter your house with burnt
offerings and will pay you my vows, which I promised with my lips and spoke
with my mouth when I was in trouble. I will offer you sacrifices of fat beasts
with the smoke of rams; I will give you oxen and goats. Come and listen, all
you who fear God, and I will tell you what he has done for me. I called out to
him with my mouth, and his praise was on my tongue. If I had found evil in my
heart, the Lord would not have heard me; But in truth God has heard me; he has
attended to the voice of my prayer. Blessed be God, who has not rejected my
prayer, nor withheld his love from me. R
My
brothers and sisters, whenever
you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, 3because you
know that the testing of your faith produces endurance; 4and let
endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking
in nothing. 5 If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to
all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you. 6But ask in
faith, never doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven
and tossed by the wind; 7, 8for the
doubter, being double-minded and unstable in every way, must not expect to
receive anything from the Lord. 9 Let the
believer who is lowly boast in
being raised up, 10and the rich in
being brought low, because the rich will disappear like a flower in the field. 11For the sun rises
with its scorching heat and withers the field; its flower falls, and its beauty
perishes. It is the same with the rich; in the midst of a busy life, they will
wither away. 12 Blessed is anyone who endures temptation. Such a one has
stood the test and will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. 13No one, when
tempted, should say, ‘I am being tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by
evil and he himself tempts no one. 14But one is
tempted by one’s own desire, being lured and enticed by it; 15then, when that
desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and that sin, when it is fully
grown, gives birth to death. 16Do not be
deceived, my beloved. 17 Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is
from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no
variation or shadow due to change. 18In fulfilment
of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would
become a kind of first fruits of his creatures.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
When we love God
through obedience to His word, we allow His peace to dwell in our lives. May we continue to obey Him through the power
of His Holy Spirit, so that His peace will ever dwell in us.
Collect for
Sixth Sunday of Easter
Merciful God,
you have prepared for those who love you riches beyond imagination. Pour into
our hearts such love toward you, that we, loving you above all things, may
obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ
our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now
and for ever. Amen.
To the Altar
Prayer over the
Gifts
Let
us pray,
God of glory, accept all we offer you this day, and bring
us to that eternal city of love and light, where Christ is King. We ask this in
his name. Amen.
Eucharistic Prayer 3
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the
Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord
our God.
It is right to give our
thanks and praise.
Blessed are you, gracious God,
creator of heaven and earth; we give you thanks and praise for the glorious
resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true paschal lamb
who has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he destroyed death, and
by his rising to life again he has won for us eternal life. Therefore, joining
our voices with the whole company of heaven, we sing our joyful hymn of praise
to proclaim the glory of your name.
Holy, holy, holy
Lord,
God of power and
might,
heaven and earth
are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the
highest.
Blessed is he who
comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the
highest.
We give thanks to you, Lord
our God, for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in
calling Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and
above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son. For in these last days you
sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer
of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to
stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of
sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night he was handed
over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ
took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to
his disciples, and said, “ Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup
of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink
this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you
and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for
the remembrance of me.”
Therefore, Father, according
to his command,
we remember his
death,
we proclaim his
resurrection,
we await his
coming in glory;
and we offer our sacrifice of
praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your
creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to
send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the
body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his
sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified by the Holy
Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them
new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and
daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the
head of the Church, and the author of our salvation;
by whom, and with whom, and in
whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty
Father, now and for ever. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
And now, as our Saviour Christ
has taught us,
we are bold to say,
Our
Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And
forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread
Lord, we died with you on the
cross.
Now we are raised
to new life.
We were buried in your tomb.
Now we share in
your resurrection.
Live in us, that we may live
in you.
The Communion
The gifts of God for the
People of God.
Thanks be to God.
Prayer after Communion
All your works praise you, O
Lord.
And
your faithful servants bless you. Gracious God we thank you for feeding us with
the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. May we, who share his body, live
his risen life; we, who drink his cup, bring life to others; we, whom the
Spirit lights, give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set
before us, so that we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth
live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant,
equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in you that
which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever
and ever. Amen.
Dismissal
Go in peace to love and serve
the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
