Hymn: I heard the
voice of Jesus say
Theme: God Our Maker
Topic: You Need not Go Away
Reading: Matthew 14:13-21
Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat
to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him
on foot from the towns. 14When
he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured
their sick. 15When
it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, ‘This is a deserted place,
and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the
villages and buy food for themselves.’ 16Jesus
said to them, ‘They need not go away; you give them something to eat.’ 17They replied, ‘We have nothing here but five
loaves and two fish.’ 18And he
said, ‘Bring them here to me.’ 19Then
he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the
two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave
them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20And all ate and were filled; and they took up what
was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 21And those who ate were about five thousand men,
besides women and children.
Introduction
It is
God’s earnest desire to be in constant communion with His people. This was why following the fall of Adam and
Eve in the Garden of Eden, God sent His only begotten Son, to restore the
relationship we had with Him. The love
God has for us in Christ Jesus is an abiding one. He never intended it to be an on-and-off
affair, but rather one that is experiential, continual, and life-transforming. However, in life, it does appear some times
that we are helpless, and that no one, including God, will be able to help
us. However, similar to the situation
that led to the miracle of feeding of the five thousand, we need not lose our
faith no matter how impossible the situation appears. Christ is still telling us to day to cast all
our cares upon Him, for He is able to see us through. We need not go away ‘empty-handed’, for He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He is the Bread of Heaven and the Fountain of
Living Water.
Questions/Discussion
1. Why did Christ say
“they need not go away” in Matthew 14:16?
Matthew 14:15-16 (KJV)
And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying,
This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that
they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. 16But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart;
give ye them to eat.
John 6:24-44
So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor
his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to
Capernaum looking for Jesus. 25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they
said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did you come here?’ 26Jesus answered them,
‘Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but
because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27Do not work for the
food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the
Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his
seal.’28Then they said to him,
‘What must we do to perform the works of God?’ 29Jesus answered them,
‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.’ 30So they said to him,
‘What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe
you? What work are you performing? 31Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written,
“He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” ’32Then Jesus said to
them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from
heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God
is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ 34They said to him,
‘Sir, give us this bread always.’ 35 Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes
to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.36But I said to you that
you have seen me and yet do not believe.37Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone
who comes to me I will never drive away; 38for I have come down
from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. 39And this is the will
of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but
raise it up on the last day. 40This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son
and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last
day.’ 41 Then the Jews
began to complain about him because he said, ‘I am the bread that came down
from heaven.’ 42They were saying, ‘Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose
father and mother we know? How can he now say, “I have come down from heaven”?’ 43Jesus answered them,
‘Do not complain among yourselves. 44No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me;
and I will raise that person up on the last day.
John 14:1-14
‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in
God, believe also in me. 2In my Father’s house there are many dwelling-places. If it were
not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?3And if I go and
prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that
where I am, there you may be also. 4And you know the way to the place where I am going.’ 5Thomas said to him,
‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’6Jesus said to him, ‘I
am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except
through me. 7If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do
know him and have seen him.’ 8 Philip said to him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and we will
be satisfied.’9Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip,
and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can
you say, “Show us the Father”? 10Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in
me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who
dwells in me does his works.11Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but
if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. 12Very truly, I tell
you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact,
will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13I will do whatever you
ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If in my name you ask
me for anything, I will do it.
2. What are the
lessons for us in Matthew 14:17-21 regarding our dependency on Christ?
Matthew 14:17-21
They replied, ‘We have nothing here but five loaves and two
fish.’18And he
said, ‘Bring them here to me.’ 19Then
he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass.
Genesis 32:22-31
The same night he got up and took his two wives, his two
maids, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23He took them and sent them across the stream, and
likewise everything that he had. 24Jacob
was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. 25When the man saw that he did not prevail against
Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as
he wrestled with him. 26Then
he said, ‘Let me go, for the day is breaking.’ But Jacob said, ‘I will not let
you go, unless you bless me.’27So he said to him, ‘What is your name?’ And he
said, ‘Jacob.’ 28Then
the man said, ‘You shall no longer be called Jacob, but
Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and
have prevailed.’ 29Then
Jacob asked him, ‘Please tell me your name.’ But he said, ‘Why is it that you
ask my name?’ And there he blessed him. 30So
Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, ‘For I have seen God face to
face, and yet my life is preserved.’ 31The
sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip.
John 6:53-59
So Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, unless you
eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have
eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55for my flesh is true food and my blood is true
drink. 56Those
who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. 57Just as the living Father sent me, and I live
because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. 58This is the bread that came down from heaven, not
like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this
bread will live for ever.’59He said these things while he was teaching in the
synagogue at Capernaum.
3. Discuss how we ‘go away from the Lord’ and ways we can
grow in faith in Him.
Psalm 17:1-7, 16
1 Hear my plea of innocence, O
Lord; give heed to my cry; *
listen
to my prayer, which does not come from lying lips.
2
Let
my vindication come forth from your presence; *
let
your eyes be fixed on justice.
3
Weigh
my heart, summon me by night, *
melt
me down; you will find no impurity in me.
4
I give no
offence with my mouth as others do; *
I
have heeded the words of your lips.
5
My
footsteps hold fast to the ways of your law; *
in
your paths my feet shall not stumble.
6
I call
upon you, O God, for you will answer me; *
incline
your ear to me and hear my words.
7
Show me
your marvellous loving-kindness, *
O
Saviour of those who take refuge at your right hand
from those who rise up against them.
16 But at my vindication I shall see your face; *
when I awake, I shall be satisfied, beholding
your likeness.
Matthew 11:25-30
At that
time Jesus said, ‘I thank you,
Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the
wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; 26yes, Father, for such was your gracious
will. 27All things have been
handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and
no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to
reveal him. 28 ‘Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy
burdens, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon
you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find
rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy,
and my burden is light.’
Romans 9:1-5
I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my
conscience confirms it by the Holy Spirit— 2I have
great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3For I could wish that I myself were accursed and
cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my
kindred according to the flesh. 4They
are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the
giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; 5to them belong the patriarchs, and from them,
according to the flesh, comes the Messiah, who
is over all, God blessed for ever.
Amen.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
Christ is
our sustainer; may we cast all our cares on Him that we may enjoy His Peace all
the days of our lives.
Closing Prayer (Collect for Eighth Sunday after
Pentecost)
Almighty God, your Son
Jesus Christ fed the hungry with the bread of his life and the word of his
kingdom. Renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain
us by your true and living bread, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
