Hymn: What a Friend We
have in Jesus
Theme: God Our Maker
Topic: Take it to God in Prayer
Reading: Numbers 21:4-9
From
Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to
go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient on the way. 5The
people spoke against God and against Moses, ‘Why have you brought us up out of
Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we
detest this miserable food.’ 6Then the Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many
Israelites died. 7The people came to Moses and said, ‘We have
sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lordto
take away the serpents from us.’ So Moses prayed for the people.8And
the Lord said
to Moses, ‘Make a poisonous serpent,
and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.’ 9So
Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent
bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live.
Introduction
One of
the most difficult periods in the life of Christians is when we pass through
difficult times and it looks as if God is not with us. At such times, it does not even matter
whether we brought the situation on ourselves or not. What really matters is where we turn to for
help: take it to God in prayer, discuss it with our friends and family, try to
fix it ourselves, or become passive and do nothing? There is a common saying that a prayer-less
Christian is a powerless Christian. If
we do not make our requests known to God how then will we receive the help we
need? Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ
had an excellent prayer life, setting us an example to always seek the Lord in
prayer. When the Israelites were
attacked by serpents in the wilderness, prayer was an integral part of the
solution. Although praying may appear
foolish to the earthly mind, it is a very important and powerful part of our
relationship with God. The Lord who made
heaven and earth hears and answers us when we call on His great Name.
Questions/Discussion
1. Why do we pray?
Psalm 98:1-6
1 O sing to
the Lord a new song,
for he has done marvellous things.
His right hand and his holy arm
have gained him victory.
2 The Lord has made known his victory;
he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.
3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
the victory of our God.
for he has done marvellous things.
His right hand and his holy arm
have gained him victory.
2 The Lord has made known his victory;
he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.
3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
the victory of our God.
4 Make a joyful
noise to the Lord, all the
earth;
break forth into joyous song and sing praises.
5 Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
with the lyre and the sound of melody.
6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn
make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord.

5 Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,

6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn

Matthew 7:7-12
‘Ask, and it will be
given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for
you. 8For everyone who asks
receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the
door will be opened. 9Is there anyone among
you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone? 10Or if the child asks for a fish, will
give a snake? 11If you then, who are
evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your
Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! 12 ‘In everything do to
others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets.
Philippians 4:4-7
Rejoice in
the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5Let
your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6Do not worry about anything, but in everything by
prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to
God. 7And
the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and
your minds in Christ Jesus.
2. What are the
lessons for us in John 3:13-17 regarding seeking the Lord in prayer?
John 3:13-17
No one has ascended
into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14And just as Moses lifted up the serpent
in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15that whoever believes in him may have
eternal life. 16 ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so
that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 ‘Indeed, God
did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the
world might be saved through him.
1 Corinthians 1:18-31
For
the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to
us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written, ‘I
will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the
discerning I will thwart.’ 20Where is the one who
is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God
made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For since, in the
wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through
the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. 22For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire
wisdom, 23but we proclaim
Christ crucified, a stumbling-block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those who are the called, both
Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For God’s foolishness is wiser than
human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength. 26 Consider your
own call, brothers and sisters: not
many of you were wise by human standards, not
many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose what is foolish in the
world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the
strong; 28God chose what is low
and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things
that are, 29so that no one might boast in the presence of God. 30He is the source of your life in Christ
Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification
and redemption, 31in order that, as it
is written, ‘Let the one who boasts, boast in the
Lord.’
3. Discuss some of
the challenges to praying without ceasing.
How do we overcome them?
2 Chronicles 7:13-16
When
I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour
the land, or send pestilence among my people, 14if my
people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and
turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive
their sin and heal their land. 15Now my
eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this
place. 16For
now I have chosen and consecrated this house so that my name may be there for
ever; my eyes and my heart will be there for all time.
Isaiah 55:6-13
6 Seek the Lord while he may be found,
call upon him while he is near;
7 let the wicked forsake their way,
and the unrighteous their thoughts;
let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them,
and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
call upon him while he is near;
7 let the wicked forsake their way,
and the unrighteous their thoughts;
let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them,
and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
10 For as the rain
and the snow come down from heaven,
and do not return there until they have watered the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
and do not return there until they have watered the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
12 For you shall go
out in joy,
and be led back in peace;
the mountains and the hills before you
shall burst into song,
and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;
instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;
and it shall be to the Lord for a memorial,
for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.
and be led back in peace;
the mountains and the hills before you
shall burst into song,
and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;
instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;
and it shall be to the Lord for a memorial,
for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.
1 Thessalonians
5:12-28
But we appeal to you,
brothers and sisters, to respect
those who labour among you, and have charge of you in the Lord and admonish
you; 13esteem them very
highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. 14And we urge you, beloved, to admonish the idlers, encourage the
faint-hearted, help the weak, be patient with all of them. 15See that none of you repays evil for
evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to all. 16Rejoice always, 17pray without ceasing, 18give thanks in all circumstances; for
this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19Do not quench the Spirit. 20Do not despise the words of prophets, 21but test everything; hold fast to what
is good; 22abstain from every form of evil. 23 May the God of
peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be
kept sound and blameless at the
coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24The one who calls you
is faithful, and he will do this. 25 Beloved, pray for us. 26 Greet all the
brothers and sisters with a holy
kiss. 27I solemnly command
you by the Lord that this letter be read to all of them. 28 The grace of
our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
The Lord
who made heaven and earth hears and answers us when we call on His great Name.
Closing Prayer (Collect for Holy Cross Day)
Almighty God, whose Son our Saviour
Jesus Christ was lifted high upon the cross that he might draw the whole world
to himself, may we who rejoice in the mystery of our redemption, have grace to
take up our cross and follow him, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
