Hymn: Love Divine,
All Loves Excelling
Theme: God Our
Maker
Topic: Love,
the Fulfillment of the Law
Reading: Exodus 20:1-4,
7-9, 12-20
Then
God spoke all these words: 2 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out
of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; 3you shall
have no other gods before me. 4 You shall not make for
yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or
that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 7 You
shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. 8 Remember
the sabbath day, and keep it holy. 9For six days you shall
labour and do all your work. 12 Honour your father and your
mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 13 You
shall not murder. 14 You shall not commit adultery. 15 You
shall not steal. 16 You shall not bear false witness against
your neighbour. 17 You shall not covet your neighbour’s house;
you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or
donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour. 18 When all
the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sound of the trumpet, and
the mountain smoking, they were afraid and trembled and stood at a
distance, 19and said to Moses, ‘You speak to us, and we will
listen; but do not let God speak to us, or we will die.’ 20Moses
said to the people, ‘Do not be afraid; for God has come only to test you and to
put the fear of him upon you so that you do not sin.’
Introduction
According
to Scripture, love is fulfillment of the Law.
When we love God and the people He put in our lives, then we do not have
to worry about breaking or not breaking God’s commandments. However we have not always kept the Law;
intentionally or unintentionally we go against the commandments of the
Lord. Due to the grace of God, Scripture
declares that if anyone sins, we have an advocate, Jesus Christ, who for His
great love for us died for our sins and is constantly mediating on our behalf
before the Lord. When we turn to God in
repentance, He works through the Holy Spirit to make us a loving people; saved
not based on works but through faith in His Son Jesus Christ. God who created us in His image is Love and
it is His utmost desire to make us a loving people. In this study, we will discuss on how living
a loving life is fulfilling the commandments of God.
Questions/Discussion
1. Discuss the
relationship between love and fulfilling the commandments of God.
Matthew 5:17-20,
43-48
‘Do not think that I have
come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to
fulfil. 18For truly I
tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass
from the law until all is accomplished. 19Therefore,
whoever breaks one of the least
of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least
in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called
great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For
I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and
Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 43 ‘You
have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbour and hate your
enemy.” 44But I say to
you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45so that you may be
children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on
the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. 46For if you love those who
love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? 47And if you greet only
your brothers and sisters, what
more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48Be perfect, therefore, as
your heavenly Father is perfect.
Luke 10:25-37
Just
then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. ‘Teacher,’ he said, ‘what must I do
to inherit eternal life?’ 26He said to him, ‘What is written in
the law? What do you read there?’ 27He answered, ‘You shall
love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with
all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.’ 28And
he said to him, ‘You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.’ 29 But
wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbour?’ 30Jesus
replied, ‘A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the
hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half
dead. 31Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and
when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32So likewise
a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But
a Samaritan while travelling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved
with pity. 34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having
poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to
an inn, and took care of him. 35The next day he took out two
denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, “Take care of him; and when
I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.” 36Which
of these three, do you think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the
hands of the robbers?’ 37He said, ‘The one who showed him
mercy.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do likewise.’
Romans 13:8-10
Owe no one
anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has
fulfilled the law. 9The
commandments, ‘You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall
not steal; You shall not covet’; and any other commandment, are summed up in
this word, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ 10Love
does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law.
2. What are the
lessons for us in Matthew 21:33-46 regarding love and fulfilling the Law?
Matthew 21:33-46
‘Listen
to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a fence
around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a watch-tower. Then he leased it
to tenants and went to another country. 34When the harvest time
had come, he sent his slaves to the tenants to collect his produce. 35But
the tenants seized his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. 36Again
he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they treated them in the same
way. 37Finally he sent his son to them, saying, “They will
respect my son.” 38But when the tenants saw the son, they said
to themselves, “This is the heir; come, let us kill him and get his
inheritance.” 39So they seized him, threw him out of the
vineyard, and killed him. 40Now when the owner of the vineyard
comes, what will he do to those tenants?’ 41They said to him,
‘He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and lease the vineyard to
other tenants who will give him the produce at the harvest time.’
42 Jesus
said to them, ‘Have you never read in the scriptures:
“The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
this was the Lord’s doing,
and it is amazing in our eyes”?
43Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom. 44The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.’
“The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
this was the Lord’s doing,
and it is amazing in our eyes”?
43Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom. 44The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.’
45 When
the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they realized that he
was speaking about them. 46They wanted to arrest him, but they
feared the crowds, because they regarded him as a prophet.
3. How do we grow
and mature as loving children of God?
Psalm 19:1-14
1 The
heavens are telling the glory of God;
and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
2 Day to day pours forth speech,
and night to night declares knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words;
their voice is not heard;
4 yet their voice goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world.
and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
2 Day to day pours forth speech,
and night to night declares knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words;
their voice is not heard;
4 yet their voice goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world.
In
the heavens he has set a tent for the sun,
5 which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy,
and like a strong man runs its course with joy.
6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
and its circuit to the end of them;
and nothing is hidden from its heat.
5 which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy,
and like a strong man runs its course with joy.
6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
and its circuit to the end of them;
and nothing is hidden from its heat.
7 The
law of the Lord is
perfect,
reviving the soul;
the decrees of the Lord are sure,
making wise the simple;
8 the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is clear,
enlightening the eyes;
9 the fear of the Lord is pure,
enduring for ever;
the ordinances of the Lord are true
and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey,
and drippings of the honeycomb.
reviving the soul;
the decrees of the Lord are sure,
making wise the simple;
8 the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is clear,

9 the fear of the Lord is pure,

11 Moreover
by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.
12 But who can detect their errors?
Clear me from hidden faults.
13 Keep back your servant also from the insolent;
do not let them have dominion over me.
Then I shall be blameless,
and innocent of great transgression.
in keeping them there is great reward.
12 But who can detect their errors?
Clear me from hidden faults.
13 Keep back your servant also from the insolent;
do not let them have dominion over me.
Then I shall be blameless,
and innocent of great transgression.
14 Let
the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable to you,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
be acceptable to you,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
Philippians 3:4B-14
If anyone else has reason to be
confident in the flesh, I have more:5circumcised on the eighth day,
a member of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of
Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee;6as to zeal, a persecutor of the
church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. 7 Yet
whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. 8More than that, I regard
everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my
Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as
rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9and
be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law,
but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on
faith. 10I want to
know Christ and the power of his
resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his
death, 11if somehow I
may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not
that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own,
because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it
my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining
forward to what lies ahead, 14I
press on towards the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.
1 John 2:3-11,
28-29
Now by this we may be sure that
we know him, if we obey his commandments. 4Whoever
says, ‘I have come to know him’, but does not obey his commandments, is a liar,
and in such a person the truth does not exist; 5but whoever obeys his
word, truly in this person the love of God has reached perfection. By this we
may be sure that we are in him: 6whoever says, ‘I abide in him’,
ought to walk just as he walked. 7 Beloved,
I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you have had
from the beginning; the old commandment is the word that you have heard. 8Yet I am writing you a new
commandment that is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the
true light is already shining. 9Whoever
says, ‘I am in the light’, while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness.10Whoever
loves a brother or sister lives
in the light, and in such a person there
is no cause for stumbling. 11But
whoever hates another believer is
in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and does not know the way to go,
because the darkness has brought on blindness. 28 And
now, little children, abide in him, so that when he is revealed we may have
confidence and not be put to shame before him at his coming. 29 If
you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who does right has
been born of him.

Almighty God, you have built
your Church on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ
himself being the chief cornerstone. Join us together in unity of spirit by
their teaching, that we may become a holy temple, acceptable to you; through
Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one
God, now and for ever. Amen.
