Hymn: Lo, He
comes with clouds descending
Theme: The Body of Christ
Topic: Found by Him at Peace
Reading: Isaiah
40:1-11
Comfort, O comfort my people, says
your God. 2 Speak tenderly to
Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her
penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins. 3 A voice cries out: ‘In
the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make
straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4 Every valley shall be
lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall
become level, and the rough places a plain. 5 Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and
all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.’ 6 A voice says, ‘Cry out!’ And
I said, ‘What shall I cry?’ All people are grass, their constancy is like
the flower of the field. 7 The grass withers, the
flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows
upon it; surely the people are grass. 8 The grass withers, the
flower fades; but the word of our God will stand for ever. 9 Get you up to a high
mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with
strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do
not fear; say to the cities of Judah, ‘Here is your God!’ 10 See, the Lord God comes with might, and his
arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. 11 He will feed his flock
like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them
in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep.
Introduction
It is the Lord’s good pleasure that we should have peace. Peace is not the absence of trouble, war or
danger but rather the absence of worries in spite of unpleasant circumstances
around us. Christ is the Prince of
Peace, and has promised that as long as we put our faith in Him, we will have
peace. The peace that comes from the
Lord is beyond human understanding. It
does not depend on things in our lives, but is a gift from God, granting us
calmness in our body, mind and spirit even in the presence of trouble. No wonder the Scripture describes God as a
present Help in the time of trouble. We live
in troubling times, but the word of God is reminding us that these will not go
on forever because Jesus is coming soon.
Scripture encourages us to be at peace in the Lord (prepared), that when
Jesus Christ returns, we will be saved.
Questions/Discussion
1. What does it
mean to be found by Christ at peace?
Isaiah 9:1-7,
53:4-6
But there will be no gloom for
those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land
of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make
glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the
nations.
2 The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness—
on them light has shined.
3 You have multiplied the nation,
you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
as with joy at the harvest,
as people exult when dividing plunder.
4 For the yoke of their burden,
and the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor,
you have broken as on the day of Midian.
5 For all the boots of the tramping warriors
and all the garments rolled in blood
shall be burned as fuel for the fire.
6 For a child has been born for us,
a son given to us;
authority rests upon his shoulders;
and he is named
Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 His authority shall grow continually,
and there shall be endless peace
for the throne of David and his kingdom.
He will establish and uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time onwards and for evermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

53:4-6 Surely he has borne our
infirmities
and carried our diseases;
yet we accounted him stricken,
struck down by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions,
crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the punishment that made us whole,
and by his bruises we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have all turned to our own way,
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.

Ephesians
2:11-22
So then, remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called
‘the uncircumcision’ by those who are called ‘the circumcision’—a physical circumcision
made in the flesh by human hands— 12remember that you were at that time without
Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the
covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been
brought near by the blood of Christ. 14For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both
groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility
between us. 15He has abolished the law with its commandments and
ordinances, so that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the
two, thus making peace, 16and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that
hostility through it. 17So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and
peace to those who were near; 18for through him both of us have access in one
Spirit to the Father. 19So then you are no longer strangers and aliens,
but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, 20built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with
Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. 21In him the whole structure is joined together and
grows into a holy temple in the Lord; 22in whom you also are built together spiritually into
a dwelling-place for God.
Philippians
4:4-9
Rejoice in the Lord
always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5Let your gentleness be known to
everyone. The Lord is near. 6Do not worry about anything,
but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your
requests be made known to God. 7And the peace of God, which
surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ
Jesus. 8 Finally, beloved, whatever
is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever
is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there
is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9Keep on doing the things that
you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace
will be with you.
2. What are the
lessons for us in Mark 1:1-8 regarding being at peace in the Lord?
Mark 1:1-8
The beginning of the good news of
Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 As it is written in the
prophet Isaiah,
‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way;
3 the voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
“Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight” ’,
4John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.6Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7He proclaimed, ‘The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.’

3. What are the
challenges to receiving and remaining in the peace of Christ? How do we overcome them?
Psalm 85:1-2, 8-13
Refrain: Show us
your mercy, O Lord.
You have been gracious to your land, O Lord,
you have restored the good fortune of Jacob. You have forgiven the iniquity of
your people and blotted out all their sins. R I will
listen to what the Lord God is saying, for he is speaking peace to his faithful
people and to those who turn their hearts to him. Truly, his salvation is very
near to those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. R
Mercy and truth have met together;
righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Truth shall spring up from the
earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven. R
The Lord will indeed grant
prosperity, and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness shall go before
him, and peace shall be a pathway for his feet. R
1 Corinthians 1:18-31
For the message about the cross
is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is
the power of God. 19For it is written,
‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’
20Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. 22For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, 23but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling-block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength. 26 Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, 29so that no one might boast in the presence of God. 30He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31in order that, as it is written, ‘Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.’
‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’

2 Peter 3:8-15a
But
do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a
thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. 9The
Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient
with you, not wanting any to
perish, but all to come to repentance. 10But
the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away
with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth
and everything that is done on it will be disclosed. 11 Since
all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of people ought you
to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness,12waiting
for and hastening the coming of
the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved,
and the elements will melt with fire? 13But,
in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where
righteousness is at home. 14 Therefore,
beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at
peace, without spot or blemish; 15and
regard the patience of our Lord as salvation.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
May we be at peace in the Lord, that when Jesus Christ returns, we will
be saved.
Closing Prayer (Collect for Second Sunday of Advent)
Almighty God, who
sent your servant John the Baptist to prepare your people to welcome the
Messiah, inspire us, the ministers and stewards of your truth, to turn our
disobedient hearts to you, that when the Christ shall come again to be our
judge, we may stand with confidence before his glory; who is alive and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
