Hymn: Praise to
the Lord the Almighty
Theme: The Body of Christ
Topic: What a Mighty God We Serve
Reading: Isaiah
40:21-31
21 Have you not known? Have
you not heard?
Has it not been told you from the beginning?
Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22 It is he who sits above the circle of the earth,
and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers;
who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,
and spreads them like a tent to live in;
23 who brings princes to naught,
and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing.
Has it not been told you from the beginning?
Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22 It is he who sits above the circle of the earth,
and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers;
who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,
and spreads them like a tent to live in;
23 who brings princes to naught,
and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing.
24 Scarcely are they
planted, scarcely sown,
scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth,
when he blows upon them, and they wither,
and the tempest carries them off like stubble.
scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth,
when he blows upon them, and they wither,
and the tempest carries them off like stubble.
25 To whom then will you
compare me,
or who is my equal? says the Holy One.
26 Lift up your eyes on high and see:
Who created these?
He who brings out their host and numbers them,
calling them all by name;
because he is great in strength,
mighty in power,
not one is missing.
or who is my equal? says the Holy One.
26 Lift up your eyes on high and see:
Who created these?
He who brings out their host and numbers them,
calling them all by name;
because he is great in strength,
mighty in power,
not one is missing.
27 Why do you say,
O Jacob,
and speak, O Israel,
‘My way is hidden from the Lord,
and my right is disregarded by my God’?
28 Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the faint,
and strengthens the powerless.
30 Even youths will faint and be weary,
and the young will fall exhausted;
31 but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint.
and speak, O Israel,
‘My way is hidden from the Lord,
and my right is disregarded by my God’?
28 Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the faint,
and strengthens the powerless.
30 Even youths will faint and be weary,
and the young will fall exhausted;
31 but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint.
Introduction
In this concluding session on our theme, the Body of Christ (the
Church), our focus is on God the Father.
He has been described in so many ways- loving, merciful, gracious, kind,
and so on- but today’s study is on His Might.
Just like other attributes of God, His Might is incomparable. There is no limit to what our Lord can do, and
according to Scripture, there is nothing impossible with Him. When He shuts a door, nobody can open it;
when He opens a door, no one can shut it.
He is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. Besides Him there is no other God. Heaven and earth adore Him, angels bow before
Him, what a Mighty God we serve! As
members of the Body of Christ, we should continually remember that we serve a
Mighty God. This will make it easier for
us to put Him first in our lives as we should.
It will also strengthen our faith in times of trouble, as no challenge
is bigger than our God.
Questions/Discussion
1. What is your
understanding of God’s Might?
Psalm 95:1-7
1 O come, let us sing
to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
3 For the Lord is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
4 In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
5 The sea is his, for he made it,
and the dry land, which his hands have formed.
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
3 For the Lord is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
4 In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
5 The sea is his, for he made it,
and the dry land, which his hands have formed.
6 O come, let us
worship and bow down,
let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
7 For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture,
and the sheep of his hand.
let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
7 For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture,
and the sheep of his hand.
O that today you would
listen to his voice!
Isaiah 40:10-20
10 See, the Lord God comes with might,
and his arm rules for him;
his reward is with him,
and his recompense before him.
11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd;
he will gather the lambs in his arms,
and carry them in his bosom,
and gently lead the mother sheep.
and his arm rules for him;
his reward is with him,
and his recompense before him.
11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd;
he will gather the lambs in his arms,
and carry them in his bosom,
and gently lead the mother sheep.
12 Who has measured the
waters in the hollow of his hand
and marked off the heavens with a span,
enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure,
and weighed the mountains in scales
and the hills in a balance?
13 Who has directed the spirit of the Lord,
or as his counsellor has instructed him?
14 Whom did he consult for his enlightenment,
and who taught him the path of justice?
Who taught him knowledge,
and showed him the way of understanding?
15 Even the nations are like a drop from a bucket,
and are accounted as dust on the scales;
see, he takes up the isles like fine dust.
16 Lebanon would not provide fuel enough,
nor are its animals enough for a burnt-offering.
17 All the nations are as nothing before him;
they are accounted by him as less than nothing and emptiness.

and the hills in a balance?
13 Who has directed the spirit of the Lord,

17 All the nations are as nothing before him;

18 To whom then will you
liken God,
or what likeness compare with him?
19 An idol? —A workman casts it,
and a goldsmith overlays it with gold,
and casts for it silver chains.
20 As a gift one chooses mulberry wood
—wood that will not rot—
then seeks out a skilled artisan
to set up an image that will not topple.

Isaiah 45:1-10
Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus,
whose right hand I have grasped
to subdue nations before him
and strip kings of their robes,
to open doors before him—
and the gates shall not be closed:
2 I will go before you
and level the mountains,
I will break in pieces the doors of bronze
and cut through the bars of iron,
3 I will give you the treasures of darkness
and riches hidden in secret places,
so that you may know that it is I, the Lord,
the God of Israel, who call you by your name.
4 For the sake of my servant Jacob,
and Israel my chosen,
I call you by your name,
I surname you, though you do not know me.
5 I am the Lord, and there is no other;
besides me there is no god.
I arm you, though you do not know me,
6 so that they may know, from the rising of the sun
and from the west, that there is no one besides me;
I am the Lord, and there is no other.
7 I form light and create darkness,
I make weal and create woe;
I the Lord do all these things.
whose right hand I have grasped
to subdue nations before him
and strip kings of their robes,
to open doors before him—
and the gates shall not be closed:
2 I will go before you
and level the mountains,
I will break in pieces the doors of bronze
and cut through the bars of iron,
3 I will give you the treasures of darkness
and riches hidden in secret places,

the God of Israel, who call you by your name.

and Israel my chosen,

7 I form light and create darkness,
I make weal and create woe;
I the Lord do all these things.
8 Shower, O heavens,
from above,
and let the skies rain down righteousness;
let the earth open, that salvation may spring up,
and let it cause righteousness to sprout up also;
I the Lord have created it.
and let the skies rain down righteousness;
let the earth open, that salvation may spring up,
and let it cause righteousness to sprout up also;
I the Lord have created it.
9 Woe to you who strive
with your Maker,
earthen vessels with the potter!
Does the clay say to the one who fashions it, ‘What are you making?’
or ‘Your work has no handles’?
10 Woe to anyone who says to a father, ‘What are you begetting?’
or to a woman, ‘With what are you in labour?’
earthen vessels with the potter!
Does the clay say to the one who fashions it, ‘What are you making?’
or ‘Your work has no handles’?
10 Woe to anyone who says to a father, ‘What are you begetting?’
or to a woman, ‘With what are you in labour?’
2. What are the
lessons for us in Mark 1:29-39 regarding the surpassing Might of our Lord?
Mark 1:29-39
As
soon as they left the synagogue,
they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30Now
Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at
once. 31He
came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and
she began to serve them. 32 That
evening, at sunset, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with
demons. 33And
the whole city was gathered around the door. 34And
he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons;
and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. 35 In the morning, while it was still very dark,
he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. 36And
Simon and his companions hunted for him. 37When
they found him, they said to him, ‘Everyone is searching for you.’ 38He
answered, ‘Let us go on to the neighbouring towns, so that I may proclaim the
message there also; for that is what I came out to do.’ 39And
he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and
casting out demons.
1 Corinthians
9:16-23
If I proclaim the gospel, this
gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe
betide me if I do not proclaim the gospel! 17For if I do this of my own
will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a
commission. 18What then is my reward? Just
this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not
to make full use of my rights in the gospel. 19 For though I am free with
respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of
them. 20To the Jews I became as a Jew,
in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law
(though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. 21To those outside the law I
became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under
Christ’s law) so that I might win those outside the law. 22To the weak I became weak, so
that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, so that I
might by any means save some. 23I do it all for the sake of the
gospel, so that I may share in its blessings.
3. How do we experience
the exceeding power of God in our lives?
Psalm 147:1-11,
20c
Refrain: Praise the Lord
who heals the brokenhearted.
Hallelujah! How good it is to sing praises to our God! how
pleasant it is to honour him with praise! The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem; he
gathers the exiles of Israel. R He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their
wounds. He counts the number of the stars and calls them all by their names. R Great
is our Lord and mighty in power; there is no limit to his wisdom. The Lord
lifts up the lowly, but casts the wicked to the ground. Sing to the Lord with
thanksgiving; make music to our God upon the harp. R He
covers the heavens with clouds and prepares rain for the earth; He makes grass
to grow upon the mountains and green plants to serve mankind. R He
provides food for flocks and herds and for the young ravens when they cry. He
is not impressed by the might of a horse, he has no pleasure in the strength of
a man. But the Lord has pleasure in those who fear him, in those who await his
gracious favour. Hallelujah! R
1 Corinthians
1:18-31
For the message about the cross
is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is
the power of God. 19For it is written, ‘I will
destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I
will thwart.’ 20Where is the one who is wise?
Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish
the wisdom of the world?21For since, in the wisdom of
God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the
foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. 22For Jews demand signs and
Greeks desire wisdom, 23but we proclaim Christ
crucified, a stumbling-block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those who are the
called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For God’s foolishness is wiser
than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength. 26 Consider your own call,
brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not
many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose what is foolish
in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame
the strong; 28God chose what is low and
despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that
are, 29so that no one might boast
in the presence of God. 30He is the source of your life
in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and
sanctification and redemption, 31in order that, as it is
written, ‘Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.’
Hebrews
12:18-29
You have not come to something that
can be touched, a blazing fire, and darkness, and gloom, and a tempest, 19and the sound of a trumpet, and
a voice whose words made the hearers beg that not another word be spoken to
them. 20(For they could not endure the
order that was given, ‘If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be
stoned to death.’21Indeed, so terrifying was the
sight that Moses said, ‘I tremble with fear.’) 22But you have come to Mount Zion
and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable
angels in festal gathering, 23and to the assembly of the
firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the
spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24and to Jesus, the mediator of a
new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the
blood of Abel. 25 See that you do not
refuse the one who is speaking; for if they did not escape when they refused
the one who warned them on earth, how much less will we escape if we reject the
one who warns from heaven! 26At that time his voice shook
the earth; but now he has promised, ‘Yet once more I will shake not only the
earth but also the heaven.’ 27This phrase ‘Yet once more’
indicates the removal of what is shaken—that is, created things—so that what
cannot be shaken may remain. 28Therefore, since we are
receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we
offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe; 29for indeed our God is a
consuming fire.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
As members of the Body of Christ, we should continually remember that we
serve a Mighty God. This will enable us
put Him first in our lives as we should, and strengthen our faith in times of
trouble.
Closing Prayer (Collect for Fifth
Sunday after Epiphany)
Merciful Lord, grant
to your faithful people pardon and peace, that we may be cleansed from all our
sins and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is
alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
