Hymn: Immortal,
invisible, God only wise
Theme: Believe in
Jesus Christ
Topic: Born
of God
Reading: 1 John
5:1-6
Everyone who
believes that Jesus is the Christ has
been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. 2By this we know that we love the
children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3For the love of God is this, that we
obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, 4for whatever is born of God conquers
the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. 5Who is it that conquers the world but
the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is the
one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with
the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the
Spirit is the truth.
Introduction
To be
born of God is to know and depend on the Lord through faith in Jesus Christ and
teaching of the Holy Spirit. It also
means that we love God above everyone and everything else. It is important, as Christians, to remember
as often as possible that we are children of the Most High God. Not born of human decision but of God’s plan
and purpose. Such knowledge strengthens
our faith, and empowers us as we follow Christ.
When we come to believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, we
become joint-heirs with Him as adopted children of God. It is not possible to follow Christ and not be
born of God. As children of God, let us
keep seeking the Lord with sincere faith, that His plans and purpose for our
lives become reality.
Questions/Discussion
1. What does it
mean to be born of God?
Acts 10:44-48
While
Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. 45The circumcised believers who had come with Peter
were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the
Gentiles, 46for they
heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, 47‘Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these
people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?’ 48So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of
Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.
Ephesians 1:1-14
Paul, an apostle
of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus and are
faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace to you
and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed be
the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with
every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,4just as he chose
us in Christ before the
foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. 5He destined us for adoption as his
children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6to the praise of his glorious grace
that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7In him we have
redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to
the riches of his grace 8that he lavished
on us. With all wisdom and insight 9he has made known
to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth
in Christ, 10as a plan for the
fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things
on earth. 11In Christ we have
also obtained an inheritance, having
been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things
according to his counsel and will, 12so that we, who
were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his
glory. 13In him you also,
when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had
believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14this is the pledge of our inheritance
towards redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.
John 1:1-14
In the beginning
was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things came into being through
him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4in him was life, and the life was the light of all
people. 5The light shines
in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. 6 There was a man
sent from God, whose name was John. 7He came as a
witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.8He himself was not
the light, but he came to testify to the light. 9The true light, which enlightens
everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in
the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not
know him. 11He came to what
was his own, and his own people
did not accept him. 12But to all who
received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of
God, 13who were born, not
of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word
became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a
father’s only son, full of grace
and truth.
2. What are the
lessons for us in John 15:9-17 regarding being born of God?
John 15:9-17
As the Father has
loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10If you keep my
commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s
commandments and abide in his love. 11I have said these
things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. 12 ‘This is my
commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13No one has greater
love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14You are my friends
if you do what I command you. 15I do not call you
servants any longer, because the
servant does not know what the
master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to
you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16You did not choose
me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will
last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17I am giving you
these commands so that you may love one another.
Romans 8:9-18
But you are not in
the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since
the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ
does not belong to him. 10But if Christ is
in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11If the Spirit of
him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your
mortal bodies also through his
Spirit that dwells in you. 12 So then,
brothers and sisters, we are
debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13for if you live
according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the
deeds of the body, you will live. 14For all who are
led by the Spirit of God are children of God.15For you did not
receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a
spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ 16it is that very
Spirit bearing witness with our
spirit that we are children of God, 17and if children,
then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer
with him so that we may also be glorified with him. 18 I consider
that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory
about to be revealed to us.
3. How do we reach
our full potential as children of the Most High God?
Psalm 98:1-9
1 O sing to
the Lord a new song,
for he has done marvellous things.
His right hand and his holy arm
have gained him victory.
2 The Lord has made known his victory;
he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.
3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
the victory of our God.
for he has done marvellous things.
His right hand and his holy arm
have gained him victory.
2 The Lord has made known his victory;
he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.
3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
the victory of our God.
4 Make a joyful
noise to the Lord, all the
earth;
break forth into joyous song and sing praises.
5 Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
with the lyre and the sound of melody.
6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn
make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord.
break forth into joyous song and sing praises.
5 Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
with the lyre and the sound of melody.
6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn
make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord.
7 Let the sea
roar, and all that fills it;
the world and those who live in it.
8 Let the floods clap their hands;
let the hills sing together for joy
9 at the presence of the Lord, for he is coming
to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
and the peoples with equity.
the world and those who live in it.
8 Let the floods clap their hands;
let the hills sing together for joy
9 at the presence of the Lord, for he is coming
to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
and the peoples with equity.
John 10:1-16
‘Very truly, I
tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by
another way is a thief and a bandit.2The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3The gatekeeper opens the gate for
him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads
them out. 4When he has
brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him
because they know his voice. 5They will not
follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the
voice of strangers.’6Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not
understand what he was saying to them. 7 So again
Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8All who came before me are thieves
and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. 9I am the gate. Whoever enters by me
will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. 10The thief comes
only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it
abundantly. 11 ‘I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his
life for the sheep. 12The hired hand,
who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and
leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13The hired hand
runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. 14I am the good
shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15just as the Father
knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. 16I have other sheep
that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen
to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.
Philippians 2:1-16
If then there is
any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the
Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, 2make my joy
complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and
of one mind. 3Do nothing from
selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than
yourselves. 4Let each of you
look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. 5Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,
6 who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
as something to be exploited,
7 but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
8 he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
even death on a cross.
6 who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
as something to be exploited,
7 but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
8 he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
even death on a cross.
9 Therefore God also highly exalted him
and gave him the name
that is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue should confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
and gave him the name
that is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue should confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
12 Therefore,
my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but
much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and
trembling; 13for it is God who
is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
14 Do all things without murmuring and arguing, 15so that you may be
blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a
crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine like stars in the world. 16It is by your
holding fast to the word of life that I can boast on the day of Christ that I
did not run in vain or labour in vain.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
As
children of God, let us keep seeking the Lord with sincere faith, that His
plans and purpose for our lives become reality.
Closing Prayer (Collect for Sixth Sunday of Easter)
Merciful God, you have prepared
for those who love you riches beyond imagination. Pour into our hearts such
love toward you, that we, loving you above all things, may obtain your
promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who
is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
