Hymn: Praise to the
Lord, the Almighty
Theme: Spirit
of Life
Topic:
Marked by the Holy Spirit
Reading: Ephesians
1:3-14
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who
has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,4just as he chose us in Christ before
the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. 5He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus
Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed
on us in the Beloved. 7In him we have redemption through his blood, the
forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace 8that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight 9he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to
his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, 10as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things
in him, things in heaven and things on earth. 11In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having
been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things
according to his counsel and will, 12so that we, who were the first to set our hope on
Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the
gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of
the promised Holy Spirit; 14this is the pledge of our inheritance
towards redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.
Introduction
When someone is marked, one of the things it means is that the
individual can hardly go missing, and is highly protected, guarded or closely
watched. Now this does not mean that
there may not be attempts to mislead, harm or destroy the person. Rather, despite all attempts at bringing the
marked person down, he/she rises again.
As Christians, we are marked by the seal of the promised Holy Spirit
guaranteeing that we belong to God through our faith in Jesus Christ. This makes us a target for the enemy, but our
confidence is that since God is with us, who dare be against us? Like John the Baptist, we may be faced with
threats even to the point of losing our lives in certain parts of the
world. Remembering that we have the
Spirit of God in us and with us encourages and grants us peace; it makes us
bold especially in the face of hostilities of the enemy.
Questions/Discussion
1. What does it
mean to be marked by the Holy Spirit?
Psalm 24:1-10
Refrain: The King of glory shall come in.
The earth is the Lord's
and all that is in it, the world and all who dwell therein. For it is he who
founded it upon the seas and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep. R
"Who can ascend the hill of the
Lord? and who can stand in his holy place?" "Those who have clean
hands and a pure heart, who have not pledged themselves to falsehood, nor sworn
by what is a fraud. R They shall receive a blessing from the Lord
and a just reward from the God of their salvation." Such is the generation
of those who seek him, of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. R
Lift up your heads, O gates; lift
them high, O everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. "Who
is this King of glory?" "The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord,
mighty in battle." R Lift up
your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; and the King of glory
shall come in. "Who is he, this King of glory?" "The Lord of
hosts, he is the King of glory." R
Romans 8:22-39
We
know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; 23and
not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the
Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our
bodies. 24For
in hope we were saved. Now hope
that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for
what is seen? 25But
if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. 26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness;
for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27And
God, who searches the heart,
knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to
the will of God. 28 We
know that all things work together for good for
those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. 29For
those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his
Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family. 30And
those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also
justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified. 31 What then are we to say about these things? If
God is for us, who is against us? 32He
who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not
with him also give us everything else? 33Who
will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34Who
is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the
right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. 35Who
will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or
persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36As
it is written,
‘For your sake we are being killed all day long;
we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.’
37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

2 Corinthians
1:8-24
We
do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, of the affliction we experienced in
Asia; for we were so utterly, unbearably crushed that we despaired of life
itself. 9Indeed,
we felt that we had received the sentence of death so that we would rely not on
ourselves but on God who raises the dead. 10He
who rescued us from so deadly a peril will continue to rescue us; on him we
have set our hope that he will rescue us again, 11as
you also join in helping us by your prayers, so that many will give thanks on
our behalf for the blessing
granted to us through the prayers of many. 12 Indeed,
this is our boast, the testimony of our conscience: we have behaved in the
world with frankness and godly
sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God—and all the more
towards you. 13For
we write to you nothing other than what you can read and also understand; I
hope you will understand until the end— 14as
you have already understood us in part—that on the day of the Lord Jesus we are
your boast even as you are our boast. 15 Since
I was sure of this, I wanted to come to you first, so that you might have a
double favour; 16I
wanted to visit you on my way to Macedonia, and to come back to you from
Macedonia and have you send me on to Judea. 17Was
I vacillating when I wanted to do this? Do I make my plans according to
ordinary human standards, ready
to say ‘Yes, yes’ and ‘No, no’ at the same time? 18As
surely as God is faithful, our word to you has not been ‘Yes and No.’ 19For
the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and
Timothy and I, was not ‘Yes and No’; but in him it is always ‘Yes.’ 20For
in him every one of God’s promises is a ‘Yes.’ For this reason it is through
him that we say the ‘Amen’, to the glory of God. 21But
it is God who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us, 22by
putting his seal on us and giving us his Spirit in our hearts as a first
instalment. 23 But I call on God as
witness against me: it was to spare you that I did not come again to Corinth. 24I
do not mean to imply that we lord it over your faith; rather, we are workers
with you for your joy, because you stand firm in the faith.
2. What are the
lessons for us in Mark 6:14-29 regarding being marked by the Holy Spirit?
Mark 6:14-29
King
Herod heard of it, for Jesus’ name
had become known. Some were saying,
‘John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; and for this reason these
powers are at work in him.’ 15But
others said, ‘It is Elijah.’ And others said, ‘It is a prophet, like one of the
prophets of old.’16But when Herod heard of it, he
said, ‘John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.’ 17 For
Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison
on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod had married her. 18For
John had been telling Herod, ‘It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s
wife.’ 19And
Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, 20for
Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he
protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him. 21But
an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers
and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. 22When
his daughter Herodias came in and
danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, ‘Ask
me for whatever you wish, and I will give it.’ 23And
he solemnly swore to her, ‘Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of
my kingdom.’24She went out and said to her mother, ‘What should I
ask for?’ She replied, ‘The head of John the baptizer.’ 25Immediately
she rushed back to the king and requested, ‘I want you to give me at once the
head of John the Baptist on a platter.’ 26The
king was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he
did not want to refuse her.27Immediately the king sent a
soldier of the guard with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the
prison, 28brought
his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her
mother. 29When
his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a
tomb.
1 Corinthians
15:45-58
Thus
it is written, ‘The first man, Adam, became a living being’; the last Adam
became a life-giving spirit. 46But
it is not the spiritual that is first, but the physical, and then the
spiritual. 47The
first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. 48As
was the man of dust, so are those who are of the dust; and as is the man of
heaven, so are those who are of heaven. 49Just
as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we will also bear the image of the man of
heaven. 50 What I am saying,
brothers and sisters, is this:
flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable
inherit the imperishable. 51Listen,
I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all be changed, 52in
a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will
sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53For
this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put
on immortality.54When this perishable body puts
on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying
that is written will be fulfilled:
‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.’
55 ‘Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?’
56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labour is not in vain.
2 Samuel 6:1-5,
12B-19
David again gathered all the
chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand.2David and all the people with
him set out and went from Baale-judah, to bring up from there the ark of God,
which is called by the name of the Lord of
hosts who is enthroned on the cherubim. 3They carried the ark of God on
a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill.
Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart 4with the ark of God; and
Ahio went in front of the ark. 5David and all the house of
Israel were dancing before theLord with
all their might, with songs and lyres and harps and tambourines and
castanets and cymbals. 12 So David went and brought
up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the city of David with
rejoicing; 13and when those who bore the ark
of the Lord had gone six
paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling. 14David danced before the Lord with all his might; David was
girded with a linen ephod. 15So David and all the house of
Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with
shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet. 16 As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David,
Michal daughter of Saul looked out of the window, and saw King David leaping
and dancing before the Lord;
and she despised him in her heart. 17 They brought in the ark
of the Lord, and set it in
its place, inside the tent that David had pitched for it; and David offered
burnt-offerings and offerings of well-being before the Lord. 18When David had finished
offering the burnt-offerings and the offerings of well-being, he blessed the
people in the name of the Lord of
hosts, 19and distributed food among all
the people, the whole multitude of Israel, both men and women, to each a cake
of bread, a portion of meat, and a cake of raisins. Then all the people
went back to their homes.
1 Corinthians
10:1-15
I
do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the
cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2and
all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3and
all ate the same spiritual food, 4and
all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that
followed them, and the rock was Christ. 5Nevertheless,
God was not pleased with most of them, and they were struck down in the
wilderness. 6 Now these things occurred
as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil as they did. 7Do
not become idolaters as some of them did; as it is written, ‘The people sat
down to eat and drink, and they rose up to play.’ 8We
must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three
thousand fell in a single day. 9We
must not put Christ to the test,
as some of them did, and were destroyed by serpents. 10And
do not complain as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11These
things happened to them to serve as an example, and they were written down to
instruct us, on whom the ends of the ages have come. 12So
if you think you are standing, watch out that you do not fall. 13No
testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and
he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he
will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it. 14 Therefore, my dear friends, flee from the worship of idols. 15I
speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.
Philippians
4:4-9
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say,
Rejoice. 5Let
your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6Do
not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7And
the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and
your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally,
beloved, whatever is true,
whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is
pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is
anything worthy of praise, think about these
things. 9Keep
on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in
me, and the God of peace will be with you.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
Remembering that we have the Spirit of God in us and with us should
encourage and grant us peace; it will make us bold especially in the face of
hostilities of the enemy.
Closing Prayer (Collect for Seventh
Sunday after Pentecost)
Almighty God, you
have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they find their
rest in you. May we find peace in your service, and in the world to come, see
you face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
