Spirit of Love
Reading:
1 Kings 8:22-30, 41-43
Then Solomon stood
before the altar of the Lord in
the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands to heaven. 23He said, ‘O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God
like you in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and steadfast
love for your servants who walk before you with all their heart, 24the covenant that you
kept for your servant my father David as you declared to him; you promised with
your mouth and have this day fulfilled with your hand.25Therefore, O Lord, God of Israel, keep for your
servant my father David that which you promised him, saying, “There shall never
fail you a successor before me to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your
children look to their way, to walk before me as you have walked before me.”26Therefore, O God
of Israel, let your word be confirmed, which you promised to your servant my
father David. 27 ‘But will God
indeed dwell on the earth? Even heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain
you, much less this house that I have built! 28Have regard to your
servant’s prayer and his plea, O Lord my
God, heeding the cry and the prayer that your servant prays to you today; 29that your eyes may be
open night and day towards this house, the place of which you said, “My name
shall be there”, that you may heed the prayer that your servant prays towards
this place. 30Hear the plea of your
servant and of your people Israel when they pray towards this place;
O hear in heaven your dwelling-place; heed and forgive. 41 ‘Likewise when a
foreigner, who is not of your people Israel, comes from a distant land because
of your name 42—for they shall hear of
your great name, your mighty hand, and your outstretched arm—when a foreigner
comes and prays towards this house, 43then hear in heaven
your dwelling-place, and do according to all that the foreigner calls to you,
so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do
your people Israel, and so that they may know that your name has been invoked
on this house that I have built.
Introduction
Love is the fulfillment of the Law.
This means that as children of God, we should not live in fear of
breaking the Lord’s commandments, but rather love Him to the extent that we obey
Him, and do not enjoy the practice of sin.
The point being that although we could fall into temptation, we do not
look forward to it, and we certainly will not live in unrighteousness. Given that our human nature is weak, to truly
love to the point of living in the righteousness of God is impossible without the
help of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit
is a gentle and loving Spirit, and empowers us to live as loving people of
God. When we allow the Holy Spirit to
control our lives, we will find it easier to love as God loves us.
Questions/Discussion
1) How
does the Holy Spirit empower us to love?
Psalm
84:1-12
Refrain: Happy are
the people whose strength is in you!
How dear to me is your dwelling, O Lord of
hosts! My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of the Lord; my heart
and my flesh rejoice in the living God. R The sparrow has found her a
house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young; by the side of your
altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. R Happy are they who dwell
in your house! they will always be praising you. Happy are the people whose
strength is in you! whose hearts are set on the pilgrims' way. R Those
who go through the desolate valley will find it a place of springs, for the
early rains have covered it with pools of water. They will climb from height to
height, and the God of gods will reveal himself in Zion. Lord God of hosts,
hear my prayer; hearken, O God of Jacob. R Behold our defender, O God;
and look upon the face of your anointed. For one day in your courts is better
than a thousand in my own room, and to stand at the threshold of the house of
my God than to dwell in the tents of the wicked. R For the Lord God is
both sun and shield; he will give grace and glory; No good thing will the Lord
withhold from those who walk with integrity. O Lord of hosts, happy are they
who put their trust in you! R
Acts
4:32-37
Now the whole group of those who believed were
of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions,
but everything they owned was held in common. 33With
great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord
Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. 34There was
not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them
and brought the proceeds of what was sold. 35They laid
it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. 36There was a Levite, a native of Cyprus, Joseph, to
whom the apostles gave the name Barnabas (which means ‘son of encouragement’). 37He sold a field that belonged to him, then brought
the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
Ephesians
6:10-20
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. 11Put on the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to stand
against the wiles of the devil. 12For our struggle is not against enemies of
blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the
cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in
the heavenly places. 13Therefore take up the whole
armour of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and
having done everything, to stand firm. 14Stand therefore, and fasten the
belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness.15As shoes for your feet put on
whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. 16With all of these, take
the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming
arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation,
and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 Pray in the Spirit at all
times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always
persevere in supplication for all the saints. 19Pray also for me, so that when
I speak, a message may be given to me to make known with boldness the mystery
of the gospel,20for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare
it boldly, as I must speak.
2) What
are the lessons for us in John 6:56-69 regarding being filled with the Spirit
of love?
John
6:56-69
Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in
them. 57Just as the living Father sent
me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of
me. 58This is the bread that came
down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But
the one who eats this bread will live for ever.’ 59He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at
Capernaum. 60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, ‘This
teaching is difficult; who can accept it?’ 61But Jesus, being aware that his
disciples were complaining about it, said to them, ‘Does this offend you? 62Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where
he was before? 63It is the spirit that gives
life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and
life. 64But among you there are some
who do not believe.’ For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did
not believe, and who was the one that would betray him.65And he said, ‘For this reason I
have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father.’ 66 Because of this
many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. 67So Jesus asked the twelve, ‘Do you also wish to go away?’ 68Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, to whom can we go? You have the
words of eternal life. 69We have come to believe and
know that you are the Holy One of God.’
3) Discuss
practical ways we demonstrate that we have the Spirit of love.
Romans
12:9-21
Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is
good;10love one another with
mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour. 11Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord.12Rejoice in hope, be patient in
suffering, persevere in prayer.13Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to
strangers. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse
them.15Rejoice with those who
rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16Live in harmony with one
another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. 17Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is
noble in the sight of all. 18If it is possible, so far as it
depends on you, live peaceably with all.19Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath
of God; for it is written,
‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’20No, ‘if your enemies are
hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by
doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.’ 21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Corinthians 13:1-13
If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not
have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and
all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not
have love, I am nothing. 3If I give away all my possessions,
and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient;
love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant 5or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable
or resentful; 6it does not rejoice in
wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth.7It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things,
endures all things. 8 Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to
an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an
end.9For we know only in
part, and we prophesy only in part; 10but when the complete comes,
the partial will come to an end. 11When I was a child, I spoke
like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an
adult, I put an end to childish ways. 12For now we see in a mirror,
dimly, but then we will see face
to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been
fully known. 13And now faith, hope, and love
abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.
1
John 4:7-21
Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God;
everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only
Son into the world so that we might live through him. 10In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and
sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one
another. 12No one has ever seen God; if we
love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13 By this we know
that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son
as the Saviour of the world. 15God abides in those who confess
that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God. 16So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God
is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. 17Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have
boldness on the day of judgement, because as he is, so are we in this world. 18There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for
fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in
love. 19We love because he first loved us. 20Those who say, ‘I love God’, and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a
brother or sister whom they have
seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. 21The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God
must love their brothers and sisters also.

Conclusion
When we allow the Holy Spirit to control our lives, we will find it easier
to love as God loves us.
Closing
Prayer (Collect for Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost)
Almighty
God, we are taught by your word that all our doings without love are worth
nothing. Send your Holy Spirit and pour into our hearts that most excellent
gift of love, the true bond of peace and of all virtue; through Jesus Christ
our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
for ever. Amen.
