Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Theme: Spirit of Life
Topic: Be filled with the Spirit
Reading: Ephesians
5:15-20
Be careful then how you
live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because
the days are evil. So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the
Lord is. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with
the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves,
singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the
Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Introduction
To be filled with the
Holy Spirit means to have no room for the flesh, and for the things that
characterized our life prior to when we put our trust in Jesus Christ.
This does not mean
that we are neither tempted of sin nor do not sin, but rather that we do not
enjoy and condone the practice of sin.
Scripture tells us that if we say we have no
sin, we deceive ourselves, but that if we confess our
sins to God, He is faithful and just, and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. Although some may take the grace of God for granted, we followers of
Christ are expected of our calling to live in the righteousness of the
Lord. This is only possible through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in our
lives. We are then, not controlled by
the flesh, but by the Holy Spirit.
Questions/Discussion
1.
What does it mean to be filled with the Spirit?
1 Kings 2:10-12; 3:3-14
Then
David slept with his ancestors, and was buried in the city of David. The time
that David reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned seven years in
Hebron, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. So Solomon sat on the throne of
his father David; and his kingdom was firmly established. Solomon loved the
Lord, walking in the statutes of his father David; only, he sacrificed and
offered incense at the high places. The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there,
for that was the principal high place; Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt
offerings on that altar. At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by
night; and God said, "Ask what I should give you." And Solomon said,
"You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant my father David,
because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in
uprightness of heart toward you; and you have kept for him this great and
steadfast love, and have given him a son to sit on his throne today. And now, O
Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David,
although I am only a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. And
your servant is in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a great
people, so numerous they cannot be numbered or counted. Give your servant
therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between
good and evil; for who can govern this your great people?" It pleased the
Lord that Solomon had asked this. God said to him, "Because you have asked
this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches, or for the life of
your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is
right, I now do according to your word. Indeed I give you a wise and discerning
mind; no one like you has been before you and no one like you shall arise after
you. I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honour all your
life; no other king shall compare with you. If you will walk in my ways,
keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I
will lengthen your life."
Acts 2:1-4
1When
the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly
a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the
whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues
of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were
filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit
enabled them.
Romans 8:8-17
8Those
who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. 9You,
however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit,
if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the
Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10But if Christ is in you,
then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives
life because of righteousness. 11And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus
from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also
give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. 12Therefore,
brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live
according to it. 13For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;
but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. 14For
those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15The
Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again;
rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by
him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16The Spirit himself testifies
with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17Now if we are children, then
we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his
sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
2.
What are the lessons for us in John 6:51-58 regarding
being filled with the Spirit?
John 6: 51-58
Jesus said to the people, "I am the living
bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever;
and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh." The
Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his
flesh to eat?" So Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, unless
you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in
you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will
raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true
drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them.
Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever
eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven,
not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats
this bread will live forever."
1 John
1:5-10
5This
is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him
there is no darkness at all. 6If we claim to have fellowship with him and
yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7But if we
walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another,
and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 8If we
claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in
us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us
our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10If we claim we have not
sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

Discuss some of the challenges to being filled the Spirit. How do we overcome them?
Psalm 111:1-9
Refrain The fear of the
Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
Hallelujah! I will give
thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright, in the
congregation.
Great are the deeds of
the Lord! they are studied by all who delight in them. R
His work is full of
majesty and splendour, and his righteousness endures for ever.
He makes his marvellous
works to be remembered; the Lord is gracious and full of compassion. R
He gives food to those
who fear him; he is ever mindful of his covenant.
He has shown his people
the power of his works in giving them the lands of the nations. R
The works of his hands
are faithfulness and justice; all his commandments are sure.
They stand fast for
ever and ever, because they are done in truth and equity. R
He sent redemption to
his people; he commanded his covenant for ever; holy and awesome is his name.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; those who act accordingly have
a good understanding; his praise endures for ever. R
1 Corinthians 6:9-20
9Or
do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be
deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who
have sex with men 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor
swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11And that is what some of you
were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name
of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 12“I
have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I
have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by
anything. 13You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and
God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual
immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14By his power God
raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. 15Do you not
know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the
members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16Do you not know
that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is
said, “The two will become one flesh.”17But whoever is united with the Lord is
one with him in spirit. 18Flee from sexual
immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever
sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19Do you not know that your
bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received
from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore
honor God with your bodies.
Colossians 3:1-17
1Since,
then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where
Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things
above, not on earthly things. 3For you died, and your life is now hidden
with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also
will appear with him in glory. 5Put to death,
therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality,
impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6Because of
these, the wrath of God is coming.7You used to walk in these ways, in the life
you once lived. 8But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things
as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your
lips. 9Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self
with its practices10and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in
knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11Here there is no Gentile or Jew,
circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is
all, and is in all.
12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy
and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility,
gentleness and patience. 13Bear with each other and forgive one another if
any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave
you. 14And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all
together in perfect unity. 15Let the peace of
Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to
peace. And be thankful. 16Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly
as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns,
and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your
hearts. 17And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the
name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Conclusion
Although some may take the grace of God for granted, we
followers of Christ are expected of our calling to live
in the righteousness of the Lord. This
is only possible through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We are then, not controlled by the flesh, but
by the Holy Spirit.
Closing Prayer (Collect for Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost)
Almighty God, you have
broken the tyranny of sin and sent into our hearts the Spirit of your Son. Give
us grace to dedicate our freedom to your service, that all people may know the
glorious liberty of the children of God; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who
lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and for ever. Amen.
