Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: Praise to the Lord, the
Almighty
Theme: The Kingdom of God is Near
Topic: And
the Christ shall come again
Reading: Malachi 3:1-4
See, I am
sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek
will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you
delight—indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of
hosts. 2But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when
he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; 3he will sit as
a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi
and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. 4Then the
offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as
in former years.
Introduction
One of the remarkable attributes of Scripture
is that it always gives direction to followers of God. Although we lose our way from time to time,
in many different ways, God’s Word corrects, reproves and gets us back on
track. However, similar to the
Israelites, we may be stubborn and wise in our own eyes, but God’s love and
mercies are stronger than our blind obstinacy.
One of the themes that run through the much of Scripture is that Christ
will come in human flesh, die, rise and ascend to Heaven, and that He will come
again to judge the living and the dead.
Regardless of human doubts, fears and unbelief, Christ came, died, rose
and ascended to Heaven. It makes
spiritual sense that if Christ already accomplished these events, He who is
alive, will come again. We may neither
know how nor when, but according to Scripture, when He comes again, all eyes
shall see Him. That is our blessed hope!
It should also be noted that a fixation with the end of the world may cause one to miss the power of the Gospel to impact our lives today.
Questions/Discussion
1) Discuss the nature of the second coming of Christ.
Daniel 9:25-27
Know therefore and understand: from the
time that the word went out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the time of
an anointed prince, there shall be seven weeks; and for sixty-two weeks it
shall be built again with streets and moat, but in a troubled time. 26After the sixty-two
weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing, and the troops
of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end
shall come with a flood, and to the end there shall be war. Desolations are
decreed. 27He
shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week
he shall make sacrifice and offering cease; and in their place shall
be an abomination that desolates, until the decreed end is poured out upon the
desolator.’
Matthew 24:15-39
‘So when you see the desolating sacrilege standing in the
holy place, as was spoken of by the prophet Daniel (let the reader understand),16then those in
Judea must flee to the mountains; 17someone on the
housetop must not go down to take what is in the house; 18someone in the field must not turn back to get a coat. 19Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are
nursing infants in those days! 20Pray that your
flight may not be in winter or on a sabbath. 21For at that
time there will be great suffering, such as has not been from the beginning of
the world until now, no, and never will be. 22And if those
days had not been cut short, no one would be saved; but for the sake of the elect
those days will be cut short. 23Then if anyone
says to you, “Look! Here is the Messiah!” or
“There he is!”—do not believe it. 24For false
messiahs and false prophets will
appear and produce great signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible, even the
elect. 25Take note, I
have told you beforehand. 26So, if they
say to you, “Look! He is in the wilderness”, do not go out. If they say, “Look!
He is in the inner rooms”, do not believe it.27For as the
lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the
coming of the Son of Man. 28Wherever the
corpse is, there the vultures will gather. 29 ‘Immediately
after the suffering of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will
not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers
of heaven will be shaken. 30Then the sign
of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth
will mourn, and they will see “the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven”
with power and great glory. 31And he will
send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect
from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. 32 ‘From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its
branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. 33So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 34Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away
until all these things have taken place. 35Heaven and
earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. 36 ‘But
about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the
Son, but only the Father. 37For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of
the Son of Man. 38For as in
those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving
in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, 39and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them
all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man.
1 Corinthians 15:1-8, 12-26
Now I should
remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good newsthat I proclaimed to
you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, 2through which
also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed
to you—unless you have come to believe in vain. 3 For I
handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that
Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures,4and that he was
buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the
scriptures, 5and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6Then he
appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most
of whom are still alive, though some have died.7Then he
appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8Last of all, as
to someone untimely born, he appeared also to me.
12 Now if Christ
is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no
resurrection of the dead? 13If there is no resurrection of the dead, then
Christ has not been raised; 14and if Christ has not been raised, then our
proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. 15We are even
found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised
Christ—whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16For if the dead
are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. 17If Christ has
not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18Then those also
who have died in Christ have perished. 19If for this
life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. 20 But in
fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have
died. 21For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of
the dead has also come through a human being; 22for as all die
in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ. 23But each in his
own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to
Christ. 24Then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God
the Father, after he has destroyed every ruler and every authority and power. 25For he must
reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26The last enemy
to be destroyed is death.
2) What are the lessons for us in Luke 3:1-6 regarding the second
coming of Christ?
Luke 3:1-6
In the fifteenth year of the reign of
Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of
Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and
Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, 2during the
high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of
Zechariah in the wilderness. 3He
went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance
for the forgiveness of sins, 4as
it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah,
‘The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
“Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled,
and every mountain and hill shall be made low,
and the crooked shall be made straight,
and the rough ways made smooth;
6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.” ’
‘The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:

make his paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled,

3) Why does the Scripture foretell the second coming of Christ?
Luke 1:68-79
68 ‘Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for he has looked favourably on his people and redeemed them.
69 He has raised up a mighty saviour for us
in the house of his servant David,
70 as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
71 that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.
72 Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors,
and has remembered his holy covenant,
73 the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham,
to grant us 74that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies,
might serve him without fear, 75in holiness and righteousness
before him all our days.
76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,
77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people
by the forgiveness of their sins.
78 By the tender mercy of our God,
the dawn from on high will break upon us,
79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.’
for he has looked favourably on his people and redeemed them.

Titus 2:11-14
For the grace
of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, 12training us to
renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives
that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, 13while we wait
for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and
Saviour, Jesus Christ. 14He it is who gave himself for us that he might
redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are
zealous for good deeds.
2 Peter 3:3-18
First of all you must understand this, that in the last
days scoffers will come, scoffing and indulging their own lusts 4and saying, ‘Where is the promise of his coming? For ever
since our ancestors died, all
things continue as they were from the beginning of creation!’ 5They deliberately ignore this fact, that by the word of
God heavens existed long ago and an earth was formed out of water and by means
of water, 6through which
the world of that time was deluged with water and perished. 7But by the same word the present heavens and earth have
been reserved for fire, being kept until the day of judgement and destruction
of the godless. 8 But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with
the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one
day. 9The Lord is not
slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to
come to repentance. 10But the day of
the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a
loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and
everything that is done on it will be disclosed. 11 Since
all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of people ought you
to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness,12waiting for
and hastening the coming of the
day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and
the elements will melt with fire? 13But, in
accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where
righteousness is at home.
14 Therefore,
beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at
peace, without spot or blemish; 15and regard the
patience of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to
you according to the wisdom given to him, 16speaking of
this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to
understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as
they do the other scriptures. 17You therefore,
beloved, since you are forewarned, beware that you are not carried away with
the error of the lawless and lose your own stability. 18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and
Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity.
Amen.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
We may neither know how nor when Christ will
return, but according to Scripture, when He comes, all eyes shall see Him. That is our blessed hope!
Closing Prayer (Collect for Second
Sunday of Advent)
Almighty God, who
sent your servant John the Baptist to prepare your people to welcome the
Messiah, inspire us, the ministers and stewards of your truth, to turn our
disobedient hearts to you, that when the Christ shall come again to be our
judge, we may stand with confidence before his glory; who is alive and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
