Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: My God, my
Father, while I stray
Theme: Revive Us, O
Lord
Topic: New Creation in Christ
Reading: Joshua 5:9-12
The Lord said
to Joshua, ‘Today I have rolled away from you the disgrace of Egypt.’ And so
that place is called Gilgal to
this day. 10 While the Israelites were encamped in Gilgal they kept the
passover in the evening on the fourteenth day of the month in the plains of
Jericho. 11On the day after the
passover, on that very day, they ate the produce of the land, unleavened cakes
and parched grain. 12The manna ceased on the
day they ate the produce of the land, and the Israelites no longer had manna;
they ate the crops of the land of Canaan that year.
Introduction
One of
the significant outcomes of turning to God through faith in Jesus Christ is
that the Lord begins to change us to be like his Son our Saviour. This is a continuous process until we die or
the Lord returns. To be a new creation
in Christ is to turn away from things in our lives that are not pleasing to
God- anger, malice, pride, selfishness, sin and all manner of manifestation of
flesh. Flesh (human nature) refers to
tendencies in us that are in conflict with 1) God’s calling on our lives and 2)
the move of the Holy Spirit. When we
turn to Christ and live for Him, the Holy Spirit enables us to live by the
Spirit and not according to the flesh; all our sins are
forgiven and we enter into a new era of peace and righteous living. Even if we fall back to our old way of
living, God in His love and mercy forgives and restores us back.
Questions/Discussion
1) What is your
understanding of being a new creation in Christ?
Psalm 32:1-11
1 Happy are they whose transgressions are forgiven, *
and whose sin is put away!
2 Happy are they to whom the Lord
imputes no guilt, *
and
in whose spirit there is no guile!
3 While I held my tongue, my bones withered away, *
because of my groaning all day long.
4 For your hand was heavy upon me day
and night; *
my
moisture was dried up as in the heat of summer.
5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you, *
and did not conceal my guilt.
6 I said, “I will confess my
transgressions to the Lord.” *
Then
you forgave me the guilt of my sin.
7 Therefore all the faithful will make their prayers to
you in
time of trouble; *
when the great waters overflow, they
shall not reach them.
8 You are my hiding-place;
you
preserve me from trouble; *
you
surround me with shouts of deliverance.
9 “I will instruct you and teach you
in the way that you should go; *
I will guide you with my eye.
10 Do not be like horse or mule,
which
have no understanding; *
who
must be fitted with bit and bridle,
or
else they will not stay near you.”
11 Great are the tribulations of the wicked; *
but mercy embraces those who trust in
the Lord.
12 Be glad, you righteous, and rejoice
in the Lord; *
shout
for joy, all who are true of heart.
2 Corinthians 5:16-21
From
now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a
human point of view, we know him
no longer in that way. 17So if
anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away;
see, everything has become new! 18All
this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us
the ministry of reconciliation; 19that
is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against
them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. 20So we
are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we
entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21For
our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become
the righteousness of God.
1 John 1:5-10
This
is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light
and in him there is no darkness at all. 6If we
say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie
and do not do what is true; 7but if
we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one
another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8If we
say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we
confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and
cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10If we
say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
2) What are the lessons
in Luke 15:1-3, 11B-32 regarding repentance?
Luke 15:1-3, 11B-32
Now all the
tax-collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. 2And the Pharisees and the scribes were
grumbling and saying, ‘This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.’ 3 So he told them
this parable: 11 ‘There was a man who had two sons. 12The younger of them said to his father,
“Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me.” So he
divided his property between them. 13A few days later the
younger son gathered all he had and travelled to a distant country, and there
he squandered his property in dissolute living. 14When he had spent everything, a severe
famine took place throughout that country, and he began to be in need. 15So he went and hired himself out to one of
the citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs. 16He would gladly have filled himself
withthe pods that the pigs were eating; and no one gave him anything.17But when he came to
himself he said, “How many of my father’s hired hands have bread enough and to
spare, but here I am dying of hunger!18I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him,
‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; 19I am no longer worthy to be called your
son; treat me like one of your hired hands.’ ” 20So he set off and went to his father. But
while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion;
he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. 21Then the son said to him, “Father, I have
sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your
son.” 22But the father said to
his slaves, “Quickly, bring out a robe—the best one—and put it on him; put a
ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23And get the fatted calf
and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate;24for this son of mine was dead and is alive
again; he was lost and is found!” And they began to celebrate. 25 ‘Now his elder
son was in the field; and when he came and approached the house, he heard music
and dancing. 26He called one of the
slaves and asked what was going on. 27He replied, “Your
brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has
got him back safe and sound.” 28Then he became angry
and refused to go in. His father came out and began to plead with him. 29But he answered his father, “Listen! For
all these years I have been working like a slave for you, and I have never
disobeyed your command; yet you have never given me even a young goat so that I
might celebrate with my friends.30But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your
property with prostitutes, you killed the fatted calf for him!” 31Then the father said to him, “Son, you are always with
me, and all that is mine is yours. 32But we had to celebrate
and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he
was lost and has been found.”
3) Discuss some of our
responsibilities as God’s new creation.
John 15:1-8, 16-17
‘I am
the true vine, and my Father is the vine-grower. 2He
removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit
he prunes to make it bear more
fruit. 3You
have already been cleansed by the
word that I have spoken to you. 4Abide
in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless
it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. 5I am
the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much
fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. 6Whoever
does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches
are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7If you
abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will
be done for you. 8My
Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. 16You
did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit,
fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in
my name. 17I am
giving you these commands so that you may love one another.
Galatians 5:22-26
By
contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
generosity, faithfulness, 23gentleness,
and self-control. There is no law against such things. 24And
those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and
desires. 25If we
live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. 26Let us
not become conceited, competing against one another, envying one another.
Revelation 3:14-22
‘And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The words of
the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the origin of God’s creation: 15 ‘I know your
works; you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were either cold or
hot. 16So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am
about to spit you out of my mouth. 17For you say, “I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing.”
You do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and
naked. 18Therefore I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire so
that you may be rich; and white robes to clothe you and to keep the shame of
your nakedness from being seen; and salve to anoint your eyes so that you may
see.19I reprove and
discipline those whom I love. Be earnest, therefore, and repent. 20Listen! I am standing
at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in
to you and eat with you, and you with me. 21To the one who
conquers I will give a place with me on my throne, just as I myself conquered
and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22Let anyone who has an
ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.’
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
When we
turn to Christ and live for Him, the Holy Spirit enables us to live by the
Spirit and not according to the flesh; all our sins are forgiven and we enter
into a new era of peace and righteous living.
Closing Prayer (Collect
for Fourth Sunday in Lent)
Gracious Father, whose blessed Son
Jesus Christ came from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the
world, evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, and we in him, who
lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
