Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: God is Working His Purpose Out
Theme: The Risen Lord Topic:
Divine Vision
Reading: Acts 16:9-15
9During the night Paul had a vision
of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and
help us.” 10After Paul had seen the vision, we
got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to
preach the gospel to them. 11From Troas we put out to sea
and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis. 12From there we traveled to
Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia.
And we stayed there several days. 13On the Sabbath we went
outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of
prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. 14One of those listening was a
woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer
in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to
respond to Paul’s message. 15When she and the members of
her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a
believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my
house.” And she persuaded us.
Introduction
One of the numerous divine experiences of Christians is that
of vision or revelation. God will from time to time reveal things to
us that ordinarily we would not know in our natural ability. This happens mainly
through word of knowledge, dreams and divine inspiration; but it is also difficult to explain
the exact details of how the process works.
What we know from scripture is that God reveals secrets to us because He loves us, does not want us to be taken unawares, and wants us to be part of His plans
and purpose on earth.
Our responsibility in response to divine
vision is to pray with gratitude and thanksgiving that the will of God be
done. Divine vision arises from deep,
strong and healthy relationship with God through
faith in His Son Jesus Christ.
Questions/Discussion
1.
How will you describe divine vision, and why do we need it?
Daniel 10:1-14
1In
the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a revelation was given to Daniel (who
was called Belteshazzar). Its message was true and it concerned a great war.
The understanding of the message came to him in a vision. 2At
that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. 3I ate no choice food; no
meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three
weeks were over. 4On
the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank of the
great river, the Tigris, 5I looked up and there before
me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his
waist. 6His body was like topaz, his
face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the
gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the
sound of a multitude. 7I,
Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision; those who were with me did not see
it, but such terror overwhelmed them that they fled and hid themselves. 8So I was left alone, gazing
at this great vision; I had no strength left, my face
turned deathly pale and I was helpless. 9Then I heard him speaking,
and as I listened to him, I fell into a deep sleep, my face to the ground. 10A hand touched me and set me
trembling on my hands and knees. 11He
said, “Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider
carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for I have now
been sent to you.” And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling. 12Then he continued, “Do not
be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set
your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your
words were heard, and I have come in response to them. 13But the prince of the
Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there
with the king of Persia. 14Now
I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future,
for the vision concerns a time yet to come.”
1 Corinthians 2:6-16
6We
do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of
this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. 7No, we declare God’s wisdom,
a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. 8None
of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have
crucified the Lord of glory. 9However,
as it is written:
“What no eye has seen,
what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived” —
the things God has prepared for those who love him—
10these
are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of
God. 11For who knows a person’s
thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same
way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12What we have received is not
the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may
understand what God has freely given us. 13This
is what we speak, not in words taught us by human
wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with
Spirit-taught words. 14The
person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit
of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. 15The person with the Spirit
makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely
human judgments, 16for,
“Who has known the mind of the Lord
so as to instruct him?”
But we have the mind of Christ.
Revelation 21:10,
22-27, 22:1-5
10And he carried me away in the Spirit
to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming
down out of heaven from God. 22I did not see a temple in the city,
because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23The city does not need the sun or
the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is
its lamp. 24The nations will walk by its light, and
the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. 25On no day will its gates ever be
shut, for there will be no night there. 26The glory and honor of the nations
will be brought into it. 27Nothing impure will ever enter it,
nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose
names are written in the Lamb’s book of life. 1Then the angel showed me the river
of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and
of the Lamb 2down the middle of the great street
of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve
crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are
for the healing of the nations. 3No longer will there be any curse.
The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will
serve him. 4They will see his face, and his name
will be on their foreheads. 5There will be no more night. They
will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God
will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.
2.
What are the lessons for us in John 14:23-29 regarding divine
vision?
John 14:23-29
23Jesus
replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them,
and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24Anyone who does not love me
will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to
the Father who sent me.
25
“All this I have spoken while still with you. 26But the Advocate, the Holy
Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and
will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27Peace I leave with you; my
peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world
gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. 28 “You heard me say, ‘I am
going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad
that I am going to the Father, for the Father is
greater than I. 29I have told you now before
it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.
3. What is our
responsibility in response to divine vision?
Psalm 67:1-7
REFRAIN
Let all the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.
May God be merciful to us and bless us, show us the
light of his countenance and come to us. Let your ways be known upon earth,
your saving health among all nations. R Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the
peoples praise you. Let the nations be
glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide all the
nations upon earth. R Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the
peoples praise you. The earth has brought forth her increase; may God, our own
God, give us his blessing. May God give
us his blessing, and may all the ends of the earth stand in awe of him. R
2 Corinthians 4:7,
13-18
7But we have this treasure in jars of
clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.13It is written: “I believed;
therefore I have spoken.” Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and
therefore speak, 14because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from
the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you to himself. 15All this is for your
benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause
thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.
16Therefore
we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are
being renewed day by day. 17For our light and momentary
troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen,
since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
Ephesians 1:15-21
15For this reason, ever since I heard
about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, 16I have not stopped giving thanks for
you, remembering you in my prayers. 17I keep asking that the God of our
Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that
you may know him better. 18I pray that the eyes of your heart
may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called
you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19and his incomparably great power for
us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength 20he exerted when he raised Christ
from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21far above all rule and authority,
power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age
but also in the one to come.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
Divine vision arises from
deep, strong and healthy relationship with God through faith in His Son Jesus
Christ.
Closing Prayer (Collect for Sixth Sunday of Easter)
Merciful God, you have prepared for those who love you
riches beyond imagination. Pour into our hearts such love toward you, that we,
loving you above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we
can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
