Let me sing for my
beloved my love-song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a
very fertile hill. He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with
choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine
vat in it; he expected it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes. And now,
inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard.
What more was there to do for my vineyard that I have not done in it? When I
expected it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes? And now I will tell
you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be
devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. I will
make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and it shall be overgrown with
briers and thorns; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon
it. For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the
people of Judah are his pleasant planting; he expected justice, but saw
bloodshed; righteousness, but heard a cry!
Introduction
Faith is one of the cardinal aspects of our relationship with
God. No wonder the Scripture says that
without faith it is impossible to please God.
Faith is a powerful phenomenon; it is such a powerful attribute that
even those who have no relationship with God can
activate the power of God simply by believing that the Lord can and will do
what He says He will do. Christ said in
Scripture that if we have faith even the size of a mustard seed, nothing would be impossible to us.
It is important to note that genuine
faith in God should not be based on desperation or a last resort but rather on firm belief that the Lord is able
to do exceedingly more than what we ask or imagine. What are you looking up to God for
today? Have faith that He is able to bring it to pass,
for nothing is too hard for the Lord.

What does it mean to have faith in the Lord?
Mark 5:21-36
21When Jesus had again
crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered
around him while he was by the lake. 22Then one of
the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at
his feet. 23He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please
come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” 24So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around
him. 25And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.
26She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent
all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew
worse. 27When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and
touched his cloak, 28because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will
be healed.” 29Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that
she was freed from her suffering.
30At once Jesus realized
that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who
touched my clothes?” 31“You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples
answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”
32But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33Then the woman,
knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with
fear, told him the whole truth. 34He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has
healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your
suffering.” 35While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house
of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why
bother the teacher anymore?” 36Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
John 20:24-31
24Now Thomas (also known as
Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25So
the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them,
“Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my
finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not
believe.” 26A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was
with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and
said, “Peace be with you!” 27Then he said to Thomas,
“Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my
side. Stop doubting and believe.” 28Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have
believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30Jesus performed many other signs in
the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31But these are written that you may
believe
that
Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life
in his name.
Hebrews 11:29-40, 12:1-2
By faith the
people passed through the Red Sea as if it were dry land, but when the
Egyptians attempted to do so they were drowned. By faith the walls of Jericho
fell after they had been encircled for seven days. By faith Rahab the
prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had
received the spies in peace. And what more should I say? For time would fail me
to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the
prophets - who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained
promises, shut the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of
the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign
armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Others were
tortured, refusing to accept release, in order to obtain a better resurrection.
Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They
were stoned to death, they were sawn in two, they were killed by the sword;
they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, persecuted, tormented -
of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and
in caves and holes in the ground. Yet all these, though they were commended for
their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had provided
something better so that they would not, apart from us, be made perfect.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us
also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run
with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer
and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him
endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right
hand of the throne of God.
2. What are the
lessons for us in Luke 12: 49-56 regarding faith in Jesus Christ?
Luke 12:49-56
Jesus said, "I came
to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! I have a
baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is
completed! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I
tell you, but rather division! From now on five in one household will be
divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided: father
against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter
against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law
against mother-in law." He also said to the crowds, "When you see a
cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, 'It is going to rain'; and so it
happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, 'There will be
scorching heat'; and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the
appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the
present time?"

Matthew 17:14-20
14When they came to the
crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him.
15“Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering
greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16I brought him to
your disciples, but they could not heal him.” 17 “You unbelieving and perverse
generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay
with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” 18Jesus
rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that
moment. 19Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” 20He replied, “Because you have so
little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed,
you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move.
Nothing will be impossible for you.”
Ephesians 3:14-21
14For this reason I kneel
before the Father, 15from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its
name. 16I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power
through his Spirit in your inner being, 17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you,
being rooted and established in love, 18may have power, together with all the
Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of
Christ, 19and to know this love that surpasses
knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
20Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine,
according to his power that is at work within us, 21to him be glory in the
church and in Christ Jesus throughout all
generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
Genuine
faith in God is based on firm belief that the Lord is able to do exceedingly more than what we
ask or imagine.
Closing Prayer (Collect for Thirteenth Sunday
after Pentecost)
Almighty God, you have
broken the tyranny of sin and sent into our hearts the Spirit of your Son. Give
us grace to dedicate our freedom to your service, that all people may know the
glorious liberty of the children of God; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who
lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
