Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: Now Thank We All Our God
Theme: Loving
God
Topic: Called to Love God
Reading: John 14:23-29
Jesus answered him, ‘Those who love me will keep my word, and my
Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24Whoever
does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not
mine, but is from the Father who sent me. 25 ‘I
have said these things to you while I am still with you. 26But
the Advocate, the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you
of all that I have said to you.27Peace
I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world
gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. 28You
heard me say to you, “I am going away, and I am coming to you.” If you loved
me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is
greater than I. 29And
now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may
believe.
Introduction
The
central focus of our journey of faith in Christ is ultimately to love; to love
God and our neighbours. That is the
fulfillment of the Law. However, we are
too weak to love a strong God; hence He sent His only begotten Son to die for
our sins and then placed His Holy Spirit within us. This He did that we may live according to His
purpose here on earth. Live to love Him
and love the people He has placed in our lives.
This may appear tough and challenging sometimes, especially when we rely
on our strength to love, but if we depend on God, His Grace will enable us
fulfill His purpose at all times. When
we sincerely love the Lord, we won’t find keeping His commandments difficult;
we follow His guidance and we find it easier to love others, including our
enemies. In this study, we will be
discussing how God’s calling upon our lives is to love all without
reservations.
Questions/Discussion
1. What does loving the Lord imply?
Romans 12:9-21
Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is
good;10love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in
showing honour. 11Do
not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord.12Rejoice
in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer.13Contribute
to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. 14 Bless those who persecute you;
bless and do not curse them.15Rejoice
with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16Live
in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. 17Do
not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight
of all. 18If it
is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.19Beloved,
never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine,
I will repay, says the Lord.’20No,
‘if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them
something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their
heads.’ 21Do
not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
1 John 4:7-21
Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God;
everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8Whoever
does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9God’s
love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so
that we might live through him. 10In
this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be
the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11Beloved,
since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. 12No
one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is
perfected in us. 13 By
this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his
Spirit. 14And
we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Saviour of
the world. 15God
abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in
God. 16So we
have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who
abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. 17Love
has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of
judgement, because as he is, so are we in this world. 18There
is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with
punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. 19We
love because he first loved us. 20Those
who say, ‘I love God’, and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a
brother or sister whom they have
seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. 21The
commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their
brothers and sisters also.
2. How do we
know we are called to love God?
Deuteronomy 6:4-19
Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. 5You
shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with
all your soul, and with all your might. 6Keep
these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. 7Recite
them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are
away, when you lie down and when you rise. 8Bind
them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, 9and
write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. 10 When the Lord your
God has brought you into the land that he swore to your ancestors, to Abraham,
to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—a land with fine, large cities that you did
not build, 11houses
filled with all sorts of goods that you did not fill, hewn cisterns that you
did not hew, vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant—and when you
have eaten your fill, 12take
care that you do not forget the Lord, who
brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13TheLord your God you shall fear; him you shall
serve, and by his name alone you shall swear. 14Do
not follow other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who are all around you, 15because
the Lord your God, who is present with you, is
a jealous God. The anger of the Lord your God would be kindled against you
and he would destroy you from the face of the earth. 16 Do
not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested
him at Massah. 17You
must diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his decrees, and his
statutes that he has commanded you.18Do
what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, so
that it may go well with you, and so that you may go in and occupy the good
land that the Lord swore to your ancestors to give you, 19thrusting
out all your enemies from before you, as the Lord has promised.
Mark 12:28-34
One of the scribes came near and heard them
disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, he asked
him, ‘Which commandment is the first of all?’ 29Jesus answered, ‘The first is, “Hear, O Israel: the Lord
our God, the Lord is one; 30you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and
with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” 31The second is this,
“You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” There is no other commandment
greater than these.’ 32Then the scribe said to him, ‘You are right, Teacher; you
have truly said that “he is one, and besides him there is no other”;33and “to love him with all the heart, and with all the
understanding, and with all the strength”, and “to love one’s neighbour as oneself”,—this
is much more important than all whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices.’ 34When Jesus saw that
he answered wisely, he said to him, ‘You are not far from the kingdom of God.’
After that no one dared to ask him any question.
3. Discuss some
of the factors that hinder us from loving God.
How do we overcome them?
Matthew 24:1-13, 42-51
As Jesus came out of the temple and was going away, his
disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple.2Then
he asked them, ‘You see all these, do you not? Truly I tell you, not one stone
will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.’ 3 When he was sitting on the Mount of
Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, ‘Tell us, when will this
be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?’ 4Jesus
answered them, ‘Beware that no one leads you astray. 5For
many will come in my name, saying, “I am the Messiah!” and they will lead many astray. 6And
you will hear of wars and rumours of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for
this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7For
nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be
famines and earthquakes in various places: 8all
this is but the beginning of the birth pangs. 9 ‘Then
they will hand you over to be tortured and will put you to death, and you will
be hated by all nations because of my name. 10Then
many will fall away, and they
will betray one another and hate one another.11And
many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12And
because of the increase of lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold.13But
anyone who endures to the end will be saved. 42Keep
awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 43But
understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night
the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his
house be broken into. 44Therefore
you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. 45 ‘Who then is the faithful and wise
slave, whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give the other
slaves their allowance of food at
the proper time? 46Blessed
is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives. 47Truly
I tell you, he will put that one in charge of all his possessions. 48But
if that wicked slave says to himself, “My master is delayed”, 49and
he begins to beat his fellow-slaves, and eats and drinks with drunkards, 50the
master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an
hour that he does not know. 51He
will cut him in pieces and put
him with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
1 Corinthians 13:1-13
If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not
have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2And
if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and
if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am
nothing. 3If I
give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient; love is kind; love
is not envious or boastful or arrogant 5or
rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6it
does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth.7It
bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. But as for
prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for
knowledge, it will come to an end.9For
we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; 10but
when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. 11When
I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a
child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. 12For
now we see in a mirror, dimly, but
then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully,
even as I have been fully known. 13And
now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is
love.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
Our
duty as the chosen of the Lord is to love God and our neighbours. This may be difficult sometimes, but God’s
grace, available to us at all times will grant us the ability to always love as
Christ loves us.
Closing Prayer (Collect for 6th Sunday of Easter)
Merciful
God, you have prepared for those who love you riches beyond imagination. Pour
into our hearts such love toward you, that we, loving you above all things, may
obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ
our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now
and for ever. Amen.
