Opening Prayer/Worship
Song: Give me grace to follow
Theme: Justification
Topic: Humility in
Christ
Reading: 2 Kings 5:1-14
Introduction
One of the hallmarks of justification is humility. God hates arrogance; whether due to sinful
living or a false sense of over-confidence based on social status. We live in a world that readily acclaims the
rich and powerful forgetting that there are heroines and heroes making life-changing
impact on a daily basis. There are
several lessons for us to learn from the story of Naaman but one key fact is
that he had a health problem but refused to act on the word of the man of
God. His reluctance was due to pride and
a preconceived idea of how he should be healed by Elisha. Fortunately, following some prodding by his
servants, he complied and got his healing.
From receiving salvation to miracles, we need to constantly humble
ourselves, remembering that it was God that called and chose us, and never the
other way round. Then God’s plans for our
lives will be fulfilled as we put our trust in Him.
Questions/Discussion
1. Describe humility in Christ.
Matthew 18:1-6
1At that time the disciples came to Jesus and
asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2He
called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. 3And
he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children,
you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4Therefore, whoever
takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of
heaven. 5And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.
6“If anyone causes one of these little
ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a
large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the
sea.
Luke 14:7-14
7When he noticed how the guests picked the
places of honor at the table, he told them this parable: 8“When
someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a
person more distinguished than you may have been invited. 9If so,
the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person
your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10But
when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he
will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored
in the presence of all the other guests. 11For all those who exalt
themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
12Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a
luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your
relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so
you will be repaid. 13But when you give a banquet, invite the poor,
the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14and you will be blessed.
Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the
righteous.”
Ephesians 4:1-6
1As a prisoner
for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have
received. 2Be completely
humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3Make every
effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4There is one
body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5one Lord, one
faith, one baptism; 6one God and
Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
2. What can we learn from the story of Naaman on humility
in Christ?
2 Chronicles 7:12-16
12the Lord appeared to him at night and said:
“I have heard your prayer
and have chosen this place for myself as a temple for sacrifices.
13“When I shut up the heavens so that there is
no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my
people, 14if my people, who are called by my name, will humble
themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I
will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 15Now
my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this
place. 16I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name
may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there.
Philippians 2:1-18
1Therefore if you have any encouragement from
being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing
in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2then make my joy
complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of
one mind. 3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.
Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4not looking to
your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
5In your relationships with one another, have
the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6Who, being in very nature God, did not
consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7rather, he made himself nothing by taking the
very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
8And being found in appearance as a man, he
humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
9Therefore God exalted him to the highest
place and gave him the name that is above every name,
10that at the name of Jesus every knee should
bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ
is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
12Therefore, my dear friends, as you have
always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue
to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13for it is God
who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
14Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15so
that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a
warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in
the sky 16as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be
able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain. 17But
even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and
service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. 18So
you too should be glad and rejoice with me.
3. How does pride enter our lives and how do we
best handle it?
Titus 3:1-8
1Remind the people to be subject to rulers and
authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, 2to
slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward
everyone. 3At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived
and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and
envy, being hated and hating one another. 4But when the kindness and
love of God our Savior appeared, 5he saved us, not because of
righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the
washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6whom he poured
out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7so that,
having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of
eternal life. 8This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to
stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to
devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and
profitable for everyone.
James 3:13-18,
4:4-10
13Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them
show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from
wisdom. 14But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your
hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15Such “wisdom”
does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16For
where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every
evil practice. 17But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of
all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good
fruit, impartial and sincere. 18Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a
harvest of righteousness.
4You adulterous people, don’t you know that
friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who
chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5Or do
you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit
he has caused to dwell in us? 6But he gives us more grace. That is
why Scripture says:
“God opposes the proud but
shows favor to the humble.”
7Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the
devil, and he will flee from you. 8Come near to God and he will come
near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you
double-minded. 9Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to
mourning and your joy to gloom. 10Humble yourselves before the Lord,
and he will lift you up.
1 Peter 5:5-11
5In the same way, you who are younger, submit
yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward
one another, because,
“God opposes the proud but
shows favor to the humble.”
6Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s
mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7Cast all your
anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8Be alert and of sober
mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for
someone to devour. 9Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because
you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the
same kind of sufferings. 10And the God of all grace, who called you
to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will
himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11To
him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
God made us, sinners, justified and have showered us with
His blessings. May we live in true humility
in Christ in appreciation of what God has done for us.
Closing Prayer
(Collect)
Almighty God,
your Son Jesus Christ has taught us
that what we do for the least of your children
we do also for him.
Give us the will to serve others
as he was the servant of all,
who gave up his life and died for us,
but lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
