Hymn: Now Thank We
All Our God
Theme: Knowing the
Lord
Topic: Thankful
Heart
Reading: Psalm 66:1-11
1 Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth;
2 sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise.
3 Say to God, ‘How awesome are your deeds!
Because of your great power, your enemies cringe before you.
4 All the earth worships you;
they sing praises to you, sing praises to your name.’
5 Come and see what God has done:
he is awesome in his deeds among mortals.
6 He turned the sea into dry land;
they passed through the river on foot.
There we rejoiced in him,
7 who rules by his might for ever,
whose eyes keep watch on the nations—
let the rebellious not exalt themselves.
8 Bless our God, O peoples, let the sound of his praise be heard,
9 who has kept us among the living, and has not let our feet slip.
10 For you, O God, have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried.
11 You brought us into the net; you laid burdens on our backs;
2 sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise.
3 Say to God, ‘How awesome are your deeds!
Because of your great power, your enemies cringe before you.
4 All the earth worships you;
they sing praises to you, sing praises to your name.’
5 Come and see what God has done:
he is awesome in his deeds among mortals.

they passed through the river on foot.

Introduction
Although sometimes
we are faced with countless challenges, we do have so much to thank God for in
our lives. For life, protection,
numerous blessings and most importantly, our salvation, we should be
grateful. Being thankful is not
necessarily for the benefit of the giver of a particular blessing but rather
more beneficial to the beneficiary. One
can say that gratitude completes the cycle of blessing. When we show appreciation for God’s
blessings, it demonstrates that we are in a relationship with Him. Not only should we have a grateful heart
towards God but also towards the people in our lives- for the friendship,
companionship and help that we receive from them. As we do that, we show that we are truly the
children of the Most High God.
Questions/Discussion
1. What are some
of the reasons why we should be grateful to God?
Romans 5:1-11
Therefore,
since we are justified by faith, we have
peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we
have obtained access to this
grace in which we stand; and we boast
in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3And not only that,
but we also boast in our
sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4and endurance produces character, and
character produces hope, 5and hope does not
disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the
Holy Spirit that has been given to us. 6 For while we
were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a
righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare
to die. 8But God proves his
love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. 9Much more surely then, now that we
have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath
of God. 10For if while we
were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more
surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. 11But more than
that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have
now received reconciliation.
2 Timothy 2:8-15
Remember
Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David—that is my gospel, 9for which I suffer hardship, even to
the point of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained.10Therefore I endure
everything for the sake of the elect, so that they may also obtain the
salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.11The saying is
sure: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he
will also deny us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny
himself. 14 Remind them of this, and warn them before God that they are to avoid wrangling over
words, which does no good but only ruins those who are listening. 15Do your best to
present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be
ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth.
Hebrews 2:10-18
It
was fitting that God, for whom
and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should
make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. 11For the one who
sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers
and sisters, 12saying, ‘I will
proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters, in the midst of the congregation
I will praise you.’ 13And again, ‘I will
put my trust in him.’ And again, ‘Here am I and the children whom God has given
me.’ 14 Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he
himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy
the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15and free those who
all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death.16For it is clear
that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. 17Therefore he had
to become like his brothers and sisters in
every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the
service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. 18Because he himself
was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.
2. Discuss how
being thankful God and the people in our lives is beneficial to us.
Luke 17:11-19
On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was
going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. 12As he entered a village, ten lepersapproached him. Keeping their distance, 13they called out, saying, ‘Jesus, Master, have
mercy on us!’ 14When
he saw them, he said to them, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’ And as
they went, they were made clean. 15Then
one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a
loud voice. 16He
prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a
Samaritan.17Then
Jesus asked, ‘Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? 18Was none of them found to return and give praise
to God except this foreigner?’ 19Then
he said to him, ‘Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.’
Romans 8:12-27
So
then, brothers and sisters, we
are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13for if you live
according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the
deeds of the body, you will live. 14For all who are
led by the Spirit of God are children of God.15For you did not
receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a
spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ 16it is that very
Spirit bearing witness with our
spirit that we are children of God, 17and if children,
then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer
with him so that we may also be glorified with him. 18 I consider
that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory
about to be revealed to us. 19For the creation
waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; 20for the creation
was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who
subjected it, in hope 21that the creation
itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom
of the glory of the children of God. 22We know that the
whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; 23and not only the
creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan
inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is
seen is not hope. For who hopes for
what is seen? 25But if we hope for
what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. 26 Likewise the
Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought,
but that very Spirit intercedes with
sighs too deep for words. 27And God, who searches the heart, knows what is
the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes
for the saints according to the will of God.
1 Peter 4:12-19
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is
taking place among you to test you, as though something strange were happening
to you. 13But
rejoice in so far as you are sharing Christ’s sufferings, so that you may also
be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed.14If you
are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of
glory, which is the Spirit of God, is resting on you. 15But
let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, a criminal, or even as a
mischief-maker. 16Yet if
any of you suffers as a Christian, do not consider it a disgrace, but glorify
God because you bear this name.17For the time has come for judgement to begin with
the household of God; if it begins with us, what will be the end for those who
do not obey the gospel of God? 18And
‘If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will
become of the ungodly and the sinners?’ 19Therefore, let those suffering in accordance with
God’s will entrust themselves to a faithful Creator, while continuing to do
good.
3. Discuss some of
the challenges to being grateful.
Jeremiah 29:1, 4-7
These are the words of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah
sent from Jerusalem to the remaining elders among the exiles, and to the
priests, the prophets, and all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into
exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. 4Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I
have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5Build
houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6Take
wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your
daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there,
and do not decrease. 7But seek the welfare of the city where I have
sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your
welfare.
Philippians
1:27-30, 3:7-21
Only,
live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether I
come and see you or am absent and hear about you, I will know that you are
standing firm in one spirit, striving side by side with one mind for the faith
of the gospel, 28and are in no way
intimidated by your opponents. For them this is evidence of their destruction,
but of your salvation. And this is God’s doing. 29For he has
graciously granted you the privilege not only of believing in Christ, but of
suffering for him as well— 30since you are
having the same struggle that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.
3:7-21 Yet whatever
gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. 8More than that, I regard everything
as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For
his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish,
in order that I may gain Christ 9and be found in
him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one that
comes through faith in Christ, the
righteousness from God based on faith. 10I want to know
Christ and the power of his
resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his
death, 11if somehow I may
attain the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I
have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own,
because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it
my own;but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining
forward to what lies ahead, 14I press on towards
the goal for the prize of the heavenly call
of God in Christ Jesus. 15Let those of us
then who are mature be of the same mind; and if you think differently about
anything, this too God will reveal to you. 16Only let us hold
fast to what we have attained. 17 Brothers and
sisters, join in imitating me,
and observe those who live according to the example you have in us. 18For many live as
enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often told you of them, and now I tell
you even with tears. 19Their end is
destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their
minds are set on earthly things. 20But our
citizenship is in heaven, and it
is from there that we are expecting a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. 21He will transform
the body of our humiliation so
that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to
make all things subject to himself.
