Hymn:
I am Thine O Lord, I have Heard Thy Voice
Theme:
Knowing the Lord
Topic:
New Heavens and a New Earth
Reading:
Isaiah 65:17-25
17 For I am about to create new heavens and a new earth;
the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind.
18 But be glad and rejoice for ever in what I am creating;
for I am about to create Jerusalem as a joy, and its people as a delight.
19 I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and delight in my people;
no more shall the sound of weeping be heard in it, or the cry of distress.
20 No more shall there be in it an infant that lives but a few days,
or an old person who does not live out a lifetime;
for one who dies at a hundred years will be considered a youth,
and one who falls short of a hundred will be considered accursed.
21 They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
22 They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat;
for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be,
and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
23 They shall not labour in vain, or bear children for calamity;
for they shall be offspring blessed by the Lord—and their descendants as well.
24 Before they call I will answer, while they are yet speaking I will hear.
25 The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat straw like the ox;
but the serpent—its food shall be dust! They shall not hurt or destroy
on all my holy mountain, says the Lord.
the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind.
18 But be glad and rejoice for ever in what I am creating;
for I am about to create Jerusalem as a joy, and its people as a delight.
19 I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and delight in my people;
no more shall the sound of weeping be heard in it, or the cry of distress.
20 No more shall there be in it an infant that lives but a few days,
or an old person who does not live out a lifetime;
for one who dies at a hundred years will be considered a youth,
and one who falls short of a hundred will be considered accursed.
21 They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
22 They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat;
for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be,
and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
23 They shall not labour in vain, or bear children for calamity;
for they shall be offspring blessed by the Lord—and their descendants as well.
24 Before they call I will answer, while they are yet speaking I will hear.
25 The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat straw like the ox;
but the serpent—its food shall be dust! They shall not hurt or destroy
on all my holy mountain, says the Lord.
Introduction
The
Scripture reminds us that we are sojourners on earth, and that the Lord has
prepared a better place for all the followers of His Son Jesus Christ. We have numerous hints in the Bible regarding
this blessed hope, and we are all encouraged to keep our faith in Christ, the
author and finisher of our faith. From
the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, God set forth the process of
redemption through the shedding of blood of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ has accomplished salvation for
all who believe in Him, and all creation awaits His second coming. As we look forward to the second coming of
the Lord, God desires that we draw closer to Him. Today’s discussion will focus on what God’s
promises are for His people regarding the future, and how knowing Him can guide
us through moments of doubt and disbelief regarding His promises to us.
Questions/Discussion
1.
Discuss some of the Biblical hints to the second coming of Jesus Christ.
Matthew
24:1-25
As Jesus came out of the temple and was going away, his
disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple.2Then
he asked them, ‘You see all these, do you not? Truly I tell you, not one stone
will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.’ 3 When he was sitting on the
Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, ‘Tell us, when
will this be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the
age?’ 4Jesus
answered them, ‘Beware that no one leads you astray. 5For
many will come in my name, saying, “I am the Messiah!” and they will lead many astray. 6And
you will hear of wars and rumours of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for
this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7For
nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be
faminesand earthquakes in various places: 8all
this is but the beginning of the birth pangs. 9 ‘Then
they will hand you over to be tortured and will put you to death, and you will
be hated by all nations because of my name. 10Then
many will fall away, and they
will betray one another and hate one another.11And
many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12And
because of the increase of lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold.13But
anyone who endures to the end will be saved. 14And
this good news of the kingdom
will be proclaimed throughout the world, as a testimony to all the nations; and
then the end will come. 15 ‘So
when you see the desolating sacrilege standing in the holy place, as was spoken
of by the prophet Daniel (let the reader understand),16then
those in Judea must flee to the mountains; 17someone
on the housetop must not go down to take what is in the house; 18someone
in the field must not turn back to get a coat. 19Woe
to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days! 20Pray
that your flight may not be in winter or on a sabbath. 21For
at that time there will be great suffering, such as has not been from the
beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. 22And
if those days had not been cut short, no one would be saved; but for the sake
of the elect those days will be cut short. 23Then
if anyone says to you, “Look! Here is the Messiah!” or “There he is!”—do not believe it. 24For
false messiahs and false prophets
will appear and produce great signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible,
even the elect. 25Take
note, I have told you beforehand.
John
14:1-4
‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in
God, believe also in me. 2In my Father’s house there are many
dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare
a place for you?3And if I go and
prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that
where I am, there you may be also. 4And you know the way to the place where I am
going.’
Acts
1:6-11
So when they had come together, they asked him,
‘Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?’ 7He
replied, ‘It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has
set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit
has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and
Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’ 9When he had said this, as they were watching, he
was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.10While he was going and they were gazing up towards
heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. 11They said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand
looking up towards heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into
heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.’
2.
What are the lessons for us in Luke 21:5-19 regarding the Lord’s second coming?
Luke
21:5-19
When some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned
with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, he said, 6‘As
for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be
left upon another; all will be thrown down.’ 7 They
asked him, ‘Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is
about to take place?’ 8And
he said, ‘Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and
say, “I am he!” and, “The time is
near!” Do not go after them. 9 ‘When you hear of wars and
insurrections, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but
the end will not follow immediately.’ 10Then
he said to them, ‘Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; 11there
will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues; and there
will be dreadful portents and great signs from heaven. 12 ‘But
before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand
you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and
governors because of my name. 13This
will give you an opportunity to testify. 14So
make up your minds not to prepare your defence in advance; 15for
I will give you words and a
wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. 16You
will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and
they will put some of you to death. 17You
will be hated by all because of my name. 18But
not a hair of your head will perish. 19By
your endurance you will gain your souls.
Matthew
24:26-35
So, if they say to you, “Look! He is in the wilderness”, do not
go out. If they say, “Look! He is in the inner rooms”, do not believe it. 27For
as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be
the coming of the Son of Man. 28Wherever
the corpse is, there the vultures will gather. 29 ‘Immediately
after the suffering of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will
not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers
of heaven will be shaken. 30Then
the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of
the earth will mourn, and they will see “the Son of Man coming on the clouds of
heaven” with power and great glory. 31And
he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his
elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. 32 ‘From the fig tree learn its
lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you
know that summer is near. 33So
also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 34Truly
I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have
taken place. 35Heaven
and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
Titus
2:11-15
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all,12training
us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live
lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly,13while
we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God
and Saviour, Jesus Christ. 14He
it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and
purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. 15 Declare these things; exhort
and reprove with all authority. Let
no one look down on you.
2
Peter 3:1-17
This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you; in
them I am trying to arouse your sincere intention by reminding you 2that
you should remember the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets, and the
commandment of the Lord and Saviour spoken through your apostles. 3First
of all you must understand this, that in the last days scoffers will come,
scoffing and indulging their own lusts4and
saying, ‘Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since our ancestors died, all things continue as they were from
the beginning of creation!’ 5They
deliberately ignore this fact, that by the word of God heavens existed long ago
and an earth was formed out of water and by means of water, 6through
which the world of that time was deluged with water and perished. 7But
by the same word the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire,
being kept until the day of judgement and destruction of the godless. 8 But do not ignore this one
fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a
thousand years are like one day. 9The
Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient
with you, not wanting any to
perish, but all to come to repentance.10But
the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away
with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth
and everything that is done on it will be disclosed. 11 Since
all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of people ought you
to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness,12waiting
for and hastening the coming of
the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved,
and the elements will melt with fire? 13But,
in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where
righteousness is at home. 14 Therefore,
beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at
peace, without spot or blemish; 15and
regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul
wrote to you according to the wisdom given to him, 16speaking
of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to
understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as
they do the other scriptures. 17You
therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned, beware that you are not carried
away with the error of the lawless and lose your own stability.
3.
Discuss some of the challenges to our acceptance of the blessed hope of
Christ’s return, and how to overcome such doubts and disbeliefs.
Matthew
24:36-51
‘But
about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the
Son, but
only the Father. 37For as the days of Noah were, so will be
the coming of the Son of Man. 38For
as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and
giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, 39and they knew nothing until the flood came
and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40Then two will be in the field; one will be
taken and one will be left. 41Two
women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. 42Keep awake therefore, for you do not know
on what day your
Lord is coming. 43But understand this: if the owner of the
house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have
stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44Therefore you also must be ready, for the
Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. 45 ‘Who then is the faithful and
wise slave, whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give the
other slaves their
allowance of food at the proper time? 46Blessed
is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives. 47Truly I tell you, he will put that one in
charge of all his possessions. 48But
if that wicked slave says to himself, “My master is delayed”, 49and he begins to beat his fellow-slaves,
and eats and drinks with drunkards, 50the
master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an
hour that he does not know. 51He
will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites, where there will
be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Thessalonians 4:13-18, 5:1-11
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about
those who have died, so that you
may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14For
since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God
will bring with him those who have died. 15For
this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are
left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have
died. 16For
the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the
sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will
rise first.17Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the
clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with
the Lord for ever. 18Therefore
encourage one another with these words. 5Now
concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything
written to you. 2For
you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief
in the night. 3When
they say, ‘There is peace and security’, then sudden destruction will come upon
them, as labour pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! 4But
you, beloved, are not in
darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; 5for
you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night
or of darkness. 6So
then, let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; 7for
those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. 8But
since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of
faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. 9For
God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord
Jesus Christ, 10who
died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him.11Therefore
encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.
Revelation
21:1-8
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven
and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.2And
I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,
prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3And
I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘See, the home of God is among mortals. He will
dwell with them; they will be his
peoples, and God himself will be with them; 4 he will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away.’ 5 And the one who was seated on the throne said, ‘See, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ 6Then he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. 7Those who conquer will inherit these things, and I will be their God and they will be my children. 8But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, the murderers, the fornicators, the sorcerers, the idolaters, and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur, which is the second death.’

Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
Behold,
Christ is coming again, and will not delay. May we continue to seek and know the Lord as
we await His second coming.
Closing
Prayer
(Collect for 26th Sunday after Pentecost)
Almighty
God, you sent your Son Jesus Christ to be the light of the world. Free us from all that darkens and ensnares
us, and bring us to eternal light and joy; through the power of him who is
alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
