Hymn: Have You
been to Jesus for the Cleansing Power
Theme: The
Prophetic Message
Topic: You Must Be
Born Again (from
above)
Reading: John
3:1-17
Now
there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews.2He came to Jesus by night and said to him, ‘Rabbi, we
know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these
signs that you do apart from the presence of God.’ 3Jesus answered him, ‘Very truly, I
tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.’ 4Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can
anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the
mother’s womb and be born?’ 5Jesus answered,
‘Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born
of water and Spirit. 6What is born of
the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7Do not be astonished that I said to
you, “You must be born from
above.” 8The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear
the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So
it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.’ 9Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can these
things be?’ 10Jesus answered
him, ‘Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? 11 ‘Very truly,
I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. 12If I have told you
about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you
about heavenly things? 13No one has
ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14And just as Moses
lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15that whoever
believes in him may have eternal life. 16 ‘For God so
loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him
may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 ‘Indeed, God
did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the
world might be saved through him.
Introduction
In today’s study,
we will turn our focus on how we should respond to God’s gift of Jesus Christ
to us. The Scripture makes it clear that
we are saved by grace and not by works; saved through faith in the atoning
power of the blood of the Lamb, and not by keeping the Law. The foregoing neither implies that the Law is
imperfect nor that we should continue to live in sin. On the contrary, the Law is perfect in the
sense of showing us how God wants us to live, but powerless in enabling us to
be holy; and also merciless when we fail to keep the commandments of God. Christ in response to Nicodemus’ comments
said that no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born from above. Although Jesus’ comment has been
misrepresented in the past, born from
above simply means new life in Christ through the power of the Holy
Spirit. The Prophetic Message includes
new life for all who believe in the name of Jesus Christ. It means change for a new life in God and to
live for the Lord alone.
Questions/Discussion
1. What is your
understanding of being born again?
Ezekiel 36:16-32
The word of the Lord came to me: 17Mortal, when the house
of Israel lived on their own soil, they defiled it with their ways and their
deeds; their conduct in my sight was like the uncleanness of a woman in her
menstrual period. 18So I poured out my wrath upon them for the blood that they had
shed upon the land, and for the idols with which they had defiled it. 19I scattered them among
the nations, and they were dispersed through the countries; in accordance with
their conduct and their deeds I judged them. 20But when they came to
the nations, wherever they came, they profaned my holy name, in that it was
said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord,
and yet they had to go out of his land.’ 21But I had concern for
my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations to which
they came. 22 Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: It is not for your sake,
O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy
name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. 23I will sanctify my
great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have
profaned among them; and the nations shall know that I am the Lord, says the LordGod, when through you I display my
holiness before their eyes. 24I will take you from the nations, and gather you from all the
countries, and bring you into your own land. 25I will sprinkle clean
water upon you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from
all your idols I will cleanse you. 26A new heart I will
give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will remove from your
body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27I will put my spirit
within you, and make you follow my statutes and be careful to observe my
ordinances. 28Then you shall live in the land that I gave to your ancestors;
and you shall be my people, and I will be your God. 29I will save you from
all your uncleannesses, and I will summon the grain and make it abundant and
lay no famine upon you. 30I will make the fruit of the tree and the produce of the field
abundant, so that you may never again suffer the disgrace of famine among the
nations. 31Then you shall remember your evil ways, and your dealings that
were not good; and you shall loathe yourselves for your iniquities and your
abominable deeds. 32It is not for your sake that I will act, says the Lord God; let that be known to you. Be
ashamed and dismayed for your ways, O house of Israel.
Romans 4:1-5,
13-17
What
then are we to say was gained by Abraham,
our ancestor according to the flesh? 2For if Abraham was
justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3For what does the scripture say?
‘Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.’ 4Now to one who works, wages are not
reckoned as a gift but as something due. 5But to one who
without works trusts him who justifies the ungodly, such faith is reckoned as
righteousness. 13 For the promise that he would inherit the world did not
come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the
righteousness of faith. 14If it is the
adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is
void. 15For the law brings
wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. 16 For this
reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be
guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but
also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of
us, 17as it is written,
‘I have made you the father of many nations’)—in the presence of the God in
whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the
things that do not exist.
Titus 3:1-11
Remind
them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for
every good work, 2to speak evil of
no one, to avoid quarrelling, to be gentle, and to show every courtesy to
everyone. 3For we ourselves
were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and
pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, despicable, hating one another. 4But when the goodness and
loving-kindness of God our Saviour appeared, 5he saved us, not
because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his
mercy, through the water of
rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. 6This Spirit he
poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Saviour, 7so that, having been justified by his
grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. 8The saying is sure. I desire that you
insist on these things, so that those who have come to believe in God may be
careful to devote themselves to good works; these things are excellent and
profitable to everyone. 9But avoid stupid
controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they
are unprofitable and worthless. 10After a first and
second admonition, have nothing more to do with anyone who causes divisions,11since you know
that such a person is perverted and sinful, being self-condemned.
2. Why did Jesus
say in John 3:3 we must be born again (from
above)?
John 3:1-17 (King James Version)
There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of
the Jews: 2The
same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a
teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except
God be with him. 3Jesus
answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be
born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born
when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be
born? 5Jesus
answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of
the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that
which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born
again. 8The
wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst
not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born
of the Spirit. 9Nicodemus
answered and said unto him, How can these things be? 10Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a
master of Israel, and knowest not these things? 11Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we
do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. 12If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe
not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? 13And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that
came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. 14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the
wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish,
but have eternal life. 16For
God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn
the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
Romans 8:5-17
For
those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the
flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the
Spirit. 6To set the mind on
the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7For this reason the mind that is set
on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law—indeed it
cannot, 8and those who are
in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But you are
not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since
the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ
does not belong to him. 10But if Christ is
in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11If the Spirit of
him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your
mortal bodies also through his
Spirit that dwells in you. 12 So then,
brothers and sisters, we are
debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13for if you live
according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the
deeds of the body, you will live. 14For all who are
led by the Spirit of God are children of God.15For you did not
receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a
spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ 16it is that very
Spirit bearing witness with our
spirit that we are children of God, 17and if children,
then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer
with him so that we may also be glorified with him.
3. How do we live
as God’s reborn?
Genesis 12:1-4A
Now the Lord said
to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the
land that I will show you.2I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and
make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3I will bless those who
bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families
of the earth shall be blessed.’ 4 So Abram went, as the Lord had
told him; and Lot went with him.
Psalm 121:1-8 (BCP)
I WILL lift Up mine eyes unto the hills: / O whence cometh my
help? My help cometh even from the LORD,/ who hath made heaven and earth. HE will
not suffer thy foot to be moved: / and he that keepeth thee will not sleep. Behold,
he that keepeth Israel / shall neither slumber nor sleep. THE LORD himself is
thy keeper: / the LORD is thy defence upon thy right hand; So that the sun
shall not burn thee by day, / neither the moon by night. THE LORD shall
preserve thee from all evil: / yea, it is even he that shall keep thy soul. The
LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in, / from this time forth for
evermore.
1 Peter 1:13-25
Therefore
prepare your minds for action; discipline
yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you
when he is revealed. 14Like obedient
children, do not be conformed to the desires that you formerly had in
ignorance. 15Instead, as he who
called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; 16for it is written,
‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’ 17 If you
invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their
deeds, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile. 18You know that you
were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with
perishable things like silver or gold, 19but with the
precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. 20He was destined before
the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your
sake. 21Through him you
have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so
that your faith and hope are set on God. 22 Now that you
have purified your souls by your obedience to the truthso that you have genuine
mutual love, love one another deeply from
the heart. 23You have been born
anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and
enduring word of God. 24For ‘All flesh is
like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and
the flower falls, 25 but the word of the Lord endures for ever.’ That word is the
good news that was announced to you.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
Christ says in the
Scripture that we must be born of the Spirit to enter the kingdom of God. May we continually yield our hearts to the
Holy Spirit, that He may cleanse us through the power of in the Blood of the Lamb.
Closing Prayer (Collect for the Second Sunday
in Lent)
Almighty God, whose
Son was revealed in majesty before he suffered death upon the cross, give us
faith to perceive his glory, that being strengthened by his grace we may be
changed into his likeness, from glory to glory; who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
