Topic:
Rest a while
Reading: 2
Samuel 7:1-14A
Now when the king was settled
in his house, and the Lord had
given him rest from all his enemies around him, 2the king said to the prophet
Nathan, ‘See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in
a tent.’ 3Nathan said to the king, ‘Go,
do all that you have in mind; for the Lord is
with you.’ 4 But that same night the word of
the Lord came to Nathan: 5Go and tell my servant David:
Thus says the Lord: Are you
the one to build me a house to live in? 6I have not lived in a house
since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I
have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. 7Wherever I have moved about
among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal
leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying,
‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’ 8Now therefore thus you shall
say to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of
hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over
my people Israel; 9and I have been with you
wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I
will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10And I will appoint a place for
my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may live in their own place,
and be disturbed no more; and evildoers shall afflict them no more, as
formerly, 11from the time that I appointed
judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies.
Moreover, the Lord declares
to you that the Lord will
make you a house. 12When your days are fulfilled
and you lie down with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you,
who shall come forth from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13He shall build a house for my
name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 14I will be a father to him, and
he shall be a son to me.
Introduction
Rest is good and necessary for optimal function of our body. If we keep working without taking a break, we
become fatigued, stressed and prone to falling sick. This is why God set us examples in the
Scripture. From the story of creation,
where it was noted that on the seventh day God rested, to Jesus Christ, who
will withdraw once in a while to rest, it is clear that we need to rest
regularly. To rest does not mean we are lazy;
rather it is a sensible way to allow our body to refresh and renew itself in
readiness of future tasks. When we are well rested, we are at the most optimal state,
physically and mentally, to serve and love God and our neighbours most
effectively. Although some people may
feel guilty to take time off from work to rest, it should not be so. As we walk with God, He will direct us to
know when to make haste, and when to relax; after all He is always in control!
Questions/Discussion
1. Why do some
of us feel guilty when it comes to taking a break from work?
Exodus 18:12-27
And
Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brought a burnt-offering and sacrifices to God;
and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat bread with Moses’
father-in-law in the presence of God. 13 The
next day Moses sat as judge for the people, while the people stood around him
from morning until evening. 14When
Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, ‘What
is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, while all the
people stand around you from morning until evening?’ 15Moses
said to his father-in-law, ‘Because the people come to me to inquire of God.16When
they have a dispute, they come to me and I decide between one person and another,
and I make known to them the statutes and instructions of God.’ 17Moses’
father-in-law said to him, ‘What you are doing is not good. 18You
will surely wear yourself out, both you and these people with you. For the task
is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone. 19Now
listen to me. I will give you counsel, and God be with you! You should
represent the people before God, and you should bring their cases before God; 20teach
them the statutes and instructions and make known to them the way they are to
go and the things they are to do. 21You
should also look for able men among all the people, men who fear God, are
trustworthy, and hate dishonest gain; set such men over them as officers over
thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 22Let
them sit as judges for the people at all times; let them bring every important
case to you, but decide every minor case themselves. So it will be easier for
you, and they will bear the burden with you. 23If
you do this, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all
these people will go to their home in peace.’ 24 So
Moses listened to his father-in-law and did all that he had said.25Moses
chose able men from all Israel and appointed them as heads over the people, as
officers over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.26And
they judged the people at all times; hard cases they brought to Moses, but any
minor case they decided themselves. 27Then
Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went off to his own country.
Ecclesiastes
3:1-8
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter
under heaven:
2 a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
3 a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6 a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to throw away;
7 a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8 a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.
2 a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
3 a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

a time for war, and a time for peace.
2. What are the
lessons for us in Mark 6:30-34, 53-56 regarding rest?
Mark 6:30-34,
53-56
he
apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. 31He
said to them, ‘Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a
while.’ For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. 32And
they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. 33Now
many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from
all the towns and arrived ahead of them. 34As
he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because
they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many
things. 53 When they had crossed
over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat. 54When
they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, 55and
rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever
they heard he was. 56And
wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the
market-places, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his
cloak; and all who touched it were healed.
3. Discuss some
of the ways regular breaks from work benefit our spiritual lives.
Psalm 89:20-37
Refrain: I will keep my love for him for ever.
I have found David my
servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him. My hand will hold him fast and
my arm will make him strong. R No enemy shall deceive him, nor any wicked
man bring him down. I will crush his foes before him and strike down those who
hate him. R My
faithfulness and love shall be with him, and he shall be victorious through my
name. I shall make his dominion extend from the Great Sea to the River. R He will
say to me, 'You are my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.' I will
make him my firstborn and higher than the kings of the earth. R I will
keep my love for him for ever, and my covenant will stand firm for him. I will
establish his line for ever and his throne as the days of heaven. R If his
children forsake my law and do not walk according to my judgements; If they
break my statutes and do not keep my commandments; I will punish their
transgressions with a rod and their iniquities with the lash; R But I
will not take my love from him, nor let my faithfulness prove false. I will not
break my covenant, nor change what has gone out of my lips. Once for all I have
sworn by my holiness: 'I will not lie to David. R His
line shall endure for ever and his throne as the sun before me; It shall stand
fast for evermore like the moon, the abiding witness in the sky.'" R
Matthew
11:25-30
At
that time Jesus said, ‘I thank you,
Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the
wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; 26yes,
Father, for such was your gracious will. 27All
things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son
except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to
whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 ‘Come
to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give
you rest. 29Take
my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and
you will find rest for your souls. 30For
my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’
Ephesians
2:11-22
So then, remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called
‘the uncircumcision’ by those who are called ‘the circumcision’—a physical
circumcision made in the flesh by human hands— 12remember that you were at that time without Christ, being
aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of
promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been
brought near by the blood of Christ. 14For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both
groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility
between us. 15He has abolished the law with its commandments and
ordinances, so that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the
two, thus making peace, 16and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that
hostility through it. 17So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and
peace to those who were near; 18for through him both of us have access in one
Spirit to the Father. 19So then you are no longer strangers and aliens,
but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, 20built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with
Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. 21In him the whole structure is joined together and
grows into a holy temple in the Lord; 22in whom you also are built together spiritually into
a dwelling-place for God.

Eucharistic Prayer 3
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth; we give you
thanks and praise, because, in the mystery you disclose to us, you reveal your
glory as the glory of your Son and the Holy Spirit: three persons equal in
majesty, undivided in splendour, yet one Lord, one God, ever to be adored in
your everlasting glory. Therefore with all the company of heaven we raise our
voices to proclaim the glory of your name.
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the
Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have
made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your Word
spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your
Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from
evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out
of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he
freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks
to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: this
is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he
gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new
covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore, Father, according to his command,
we remember his death,
we proclaim his resurrection,
we await his coming in glory;
and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of
all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts,
that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new
covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in
him, may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them
new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and
daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the
head of the Church, and the author of our salvation;
by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be
thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give
us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those
who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.
Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread
“I am the bread of life,” says the Lord.
“Whoever comes to me will never be hungry;
whoever believes in me will never thirst.”
Taste and see that the Lord is good;
happy are they who trust in him!
The Communion

All your works praise you, O Lord.
And your faithful servants bless you.
Gracious God we thank you for feeding us
with the body and blood of your Son Jesus
Christ.
May we, who share his body, live his risen
life;
we, who drink his cup, bring life to others;
we, whom the Spirit lights, give light to
the world.
Keep us firm in the hope you have set before
us,
so that we and all your children shall be
free,
and the whole earth live to praise your
name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
