Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: Abide With Me
Theme: Spirit of Life
Topic: In the Palms of God’s Hands
Reading: 1 Samuel 1:4-20
On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to
his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; 5but to Hannah he gave
a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb. 6Her rival used to
provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. 7So it went on year
after year; as often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore
Hannah wept and would not eat. 8Her husband Elkanah said to her, ‘Hannah, why do you weep? Why
do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?’
9 After they had
eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord. Now Eli the priest was
sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. 10She was deeply
distressed and prayed to the Lord,
and wept bitterly. 11She made this vow: ‘O Lord of
hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me,
and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I
will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall
drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head.’
12 As she continued
praying before the Lord, Eli
observed her mouth.13Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice
was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. 14So Eli said to her,
‘How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine.’15But Hannah answered,
‘No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor
strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. 16Do not regard your
servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety
and vexation all this time.’ 17Then Eli answered, ‘Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the
petition you have made to him.’ 18And she said, ‘Let your servant find favour in your sight.’ Then
the woman went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and
her countenance was sad no longer.
19 They rose early
in the morning and worshipped before the Lord;
then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and
the Lord remembered her. 20In due time Hannah
conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, ‘I have asked him
of the Lord.’
Introduction
Although most believers are
convinced that nothing takes God by surprise, it is generally a difficult
concept to comprehend, especially in times of trouble. It is simply difficult to believe that God
can allow certain situations to happen or arise in our lives. During tough times, a common question that
runs through our mind is ‘where is God?’ Although it is hard to make sense of
difficult situations and mishaps, the Scripture actually tells us that
troubling times will come. The most
important decision at such time is to put our trust in the Lord, pray, and know
that God will ultimately use the situation for our good and to His glory. Trusting God during hard times can only be
achieved through the help of the Holy Spirit; the Spirit helps us in our prayer
and reminds us of God’s unfailing love.
God was aware of Hannah’s barrenness, as well as the ridicules she faced
continually; when Hannah called upon the Lord, He answered her, and blessed her
with a son. The Lord has us in the palms
of His Hands; He will hear and deliver us when we call upon Him.
Questions/Discussion
1) What does it mean to
be in the palms of God’s hands?
1 Samuel 2:1-10 (as
Canticle)
Refrain:
My heart exults in the Lord; I rejoice in your salvation.
My
heart exults in the Lord, my strength is exalted in my God. My mouth derides my
enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. There is no Holy One like you, O
Lord, nor any Rock like you, our God. For you are a God of knowledge and by you
our actions are weighed. R The bows of the mighty are broken, but the
feeble gird on strength. Those who were full now search bread, but those who
were hungry are well fed. The barren woman has borne sevenfold, but she who has
many children is forlorn. Both the poor and the rich are of your making, you
bring low and you also exalt. R You raise up the poor from the dust, and lift
the needy from the ash heap. You make them sit with the rulers, and inherit a
place of honour. For the pillars of the earth are yours and on them you have
set the world. R
Isaiah 49:13-26
13 Sing for joy,
O heavens, and exult, O earth;
break forth, O mountains, into singing!
For the Lord has comforted his people,
and will have compassion on his suffering ones.
break forth, O mountains, into singing!
For the Lord has comforted his people,
and will have compassion on his suffering ones.
14 But Zion said,
‘The Lord has forsaken
me,
my Lord has forgotten me.’
15 Can a woman forget her nursing-child,
or show no compassion for the child of her womb?
Even these may forget,
yet I will not forget you.
16 See, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands;
your walls are continually before me.
17 Your builders outdo your destroyers,
and those who laid you waste go away from you.
18 Lift up your eyes all around and see;
they all gather, they come to you.
As I live, says the Lord,
you shall put all of them on like an ornament,
and like a bride you shall bind them on.
my Lord has forgotten me.’

19 Surely your
waste and your desolate places
and your devastated land—
surely now you will be too crowded for your inhabitants,
and those who swallowed you up will be far away.
20 The children born in the time of your bereavement
will yet say in your hearing:
‘The place is too crowded for me;
make room for me to settle.’
21 Then you will say in your heart,
‘Who has borne me these?
I was bereaved and barren,
exiled and put away—
so who has reared these?
I was left all alone—
where then have these come from?’
and your devastated land—
surely now you will be too crowded for your inhabitants,

22 Thus says the
Lord God:
I will soon lift up my hand to the nations,
and raise my signal to the peoples;
and they shall bring your sons in their bosom,
and your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders.
23 Kings shall be your foster-fathers,
and their queens your nursing-mothers.
With their faces to the ground they shall bow down to you,
and lick the dust of your feet.
Then you will know that I am the Lord;
those who wait for me shall not be put to shame.
I will soon lift up my hand to the nations,
and raise my signal to the peoples;
and they shall bring your sons in their bosom,
and your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders.

those who wait for me shall not be put to shame.
24 Can the prey be
taken from the mighty,
or the captives of a tyrant be rescued?
25 But thus says the Lord:
Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken,
and the prey of the tyrant be rescued;
for I will contend with those who contend with you,
and I will save your children.
26 I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh,
and they shall be drunk with their own blood as with wine.
Then all flesh shall know
that I am the Lord your Saviour,
and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
or the captives of a tyrant be rescued?
25 But thus says the Lord:
Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken,
and the prey of the tyrant be rescued;

and I will save your children.
26 I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh,
and they shall be drunk with their own blood as with wine.
Then all flesh shall know
that I am the Lord your Saviour,
and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
Joel 2:21-32
21 Do not fear, O soil;
be glad and rejoice,
for the Lord has done great things!
22 Do not fear, you animals of the field,
for the pastures of the wilderness are green;
the tree bears its fruit,
the fig tree and vine give their full yield.
be glad and rejoice,
for the Lord has done great things!
22 Do not fear, you animals of the field,
for the pastures of the wilderness are green;
the tree bears its fruit,
the fig tree and vine give their full yield.
23 O children of Zion, be glad
and rejoice in the Lord your God;
for he has given the early rain for your vindication,
he has poured down for you abundant rain,
the early and the later rain, as before.
24 The threshing-floors shall be full of grain,
the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
and rejoice in the Lord your God;
for he has given the early rain for your vindication,
he has poured down for you abundant rain,
the early and the later rain, as before.
24 The threshing-floors shall be full of grain,
the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
25 I will repay you for the years
that the swarming locust has eaten,
the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter,
my great army, which I sent against you.
that the swarming locust has eaten,
the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter,
my great army, which I sent against you.
26 You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied,
and praise the name of the Lord your God,
who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame.
27 You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel,
and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other.
And my people shall never again
be put to shame.
and praise the name of the Lord your God,
who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame.
27 You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel,
and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other.
And my people shall never again
be put to shame.
28 Then afterwards
I will pour out my spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your old men shall dream dreams,
and your young men shall see visions.
29 Even on the male and female slaves,
in those days, I will pour out my spirit.
I will pour out my spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your old men shall dream dreams,
and your young men shall see visions.
29 Even on the male and female slaves,
in those days, I will pour out my spirit.
30 I will show
portents in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the
moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.32Then everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and
in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those
whom the Lord calls.
2) What are the lessons
for us in Mark 13:1-8 regarding troubling times?
Mark 13:1-8
As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him,
‘Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!’ 2Then Jesus asked him,
‘Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon
another; all will be thrown down.’
3 When he was
sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and
Andrew asked him privately, 4‘Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all
these things are about to be accomplished?’ 5Then Jesus began to
say to them, ‘Beware that no one leads you astray. 6Many will come in my
name and say, “I am he!” and they will lead many astray. 7When you hear of wars
and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is
still to come. 8For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against
kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines.
This is but the beginning of the birth pangs.
3) What should be our attitude when going
through tough times?
How does the Holy Spirit help us at such times?
Ephesians 1:3-21
Blessed be the God and
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every
spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,4just as he chose us in Christ before
the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. 5He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus
Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will,6to the praise of his
glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of
our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace 8that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight 9he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to
his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, 10as a plan for the fullness of time, to
gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. 11In Christ we have also obtained an
inheritance, having been destined
according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his
counsel and will, 12so that we, who were the
first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13In him you also, when you had heard the word
of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked
with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14this is the pledge of our inheritance
towards redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.
15 I have heard of
your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love towards
all the saints, and for this reason 16I do not cease to give
thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. 17I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus
Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as
you come to know him, 18so that, with the eyes of
your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called
you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, 19and what is the immeasurable greatness of
his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. 20God put
this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at
his right hand in the heavenly places, 21far above all rule and
authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only
in this age but also in the age to come.
Hebrews 10:11-25
And every priest stands
day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that
can never take away sins. 12But when Christ had offered for all time a single
sacrifice for sins, ‘he sat down at the right hand of God’, 13and since then has been waiting ‘until his
enemies would be made a footstool for his feet.’ 14For by a single offering he has perfected
for all time those who are sanctified. 15And the Holy Spirit also
testifies to us, for after saying,
16 ‘This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, says the Lord:
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds’,
17he also adds,
‘I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.’
18Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
19 Therefore, my
friends, since we have confidence
to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20by the new and living way
that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), 21and since we have a great priest over the
house of God, 22let us approach with a
true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an
evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast to the confession of our
hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to provoke one
another to love and good deeds, 25not neglecting to meet
together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the
more as you see the Day approaching.

Conclusion
Trusting God during hard times
can only be achieved through the help of the Holy Spirit; the Spirit helps us
in our prayer and reminds us of God’s unfailing love.
Closing Prayer (Collect
for Twenty-fifth Sunday after Pentecost)
Almighty God, you sent your Son Jesus
Christ to be the light of the world. Free us from all that darkens and ensnares
us, and bring us to eternal light and joy; through the power of him who is
alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
