Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy,
Lord God Almighty
Theme: Spirit Divine
Topic: Triune God
Reading: Acts 2:1-21
When the day of Pentecost had come,
they were all together in one place. 2And
suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it
filled the entire house where they were sitting.3Divided tongues, as
of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4All of them were filled
with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave
them ability. 5 Now there were devout
Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6And at this sound the
crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the
native language of each.7Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not
all these who are speaking Galileans? 8And
how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9Parthians, Medes,
Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia,
Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both
Jews and proselytes, 11Cretans
and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of
power.’ 12All were
amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ 13But others sneered and
said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’ 14 But
Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of
Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to
what I say. 15Indeed,
these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the
morning. 16No, this is
what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 “In the last days it will be, God
declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and
your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and
your old men shall dream dreams. 18 Even upon my slaves, both men and
women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall
prophesy. 19 And I will show portents in the heaven
above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and
smoky mist. 20 The sun shall be turned to darkness and
the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. 21 Then everyone who calls on the name of
the Lord shall be saved.”
Introduction
As hard
as it may be to explain, our faith is in the Triune God – Father, Son and Holy
Spirit. Although there are no direct
mention of the term ‘Trinity’ in Scripture, several accounts in both Old and
New Testaments make reference to the relationship among the Trinity or Triune
God. It is important that Christians possess
as much understanding as possible of the Trinity. This is for several reasons – it is described
in Scripture for our benefit, enables us to understand the relationship we have
with God, and is a model for us to follow in the different relationships we are
involved in. The Holy Spirit is at work
in our world in too many ways to list, and we ought to be sensitive to His
move. Before His ascension, Christ
announced the promise of the Holy Spirit by the Father; and there is no doubt
that the Spirit is at work in our lives and world today.
Questions/Discussion
1) What is your
understanding of the Trinity?
Psalm 8:1-9
Refrain: O Lord our governor, how exalted is your name
in all the world!
O Lord our governor, how exalted is
your name in all the world! Out of the mouths of infants and children your
majesty is praised above the heavens. R You have set up a stronghold
against your adversaries, to quell the enemy and the avenger. When I consider
your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars you have set in
their courses, R What is man that you should be mindful of him? the son
of man that you should seek him out? You have made him but little lower than
the angels; you adorn him with glory and honour; R You give him mastery
over the works of your hands; you put all things under his feet; All sheep and
oxen, even the wild beasts of the field, R The birds of the air, the
fish of the sea, and whatsoever walks in the paths of the sea. O Lord our
governor, how exalted is your name in all the world! R
John 1:1-4, 14
In
the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He
was in the beginning with God. 3All things came into being
through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into
being 4in him was life, and the life was the light of all
people. 14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we
have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace
and truth.
John 10:30-39
The
Father and I are one.’ 31 The Jews took up stones again to
stone him. 32Jesus replied, ‘I have shown you many good works
from the Father. For which of these are you going to stone me?’ 33The
Jews answered, ‘It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you, but
for blasphemy, because you, though only a human being, are making yourself
God.’ 34Jesus answered, ‘Is it not written in your law, “I
said, you are gods”? 35If those to whom the word of God came
were called “gods”—and the scripture cannot be annulled—36can you
say that the one whom the Father has sanctified and sent into the world is
blaspheming because I said, “I am God’s Son”? 37If I am not
doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me. 38But if
I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you
may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.’39Then
they tried to arrest him again, but he escaped from their hands.
2) What are the lessons for
us in John 16:12-15 regarding the Triune God?
John 16:12-15
‘I still have many
things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.13When the
Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not
speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you
the things that are to come. 14He will
glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I
said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
3) Why do we need to
know about and understand the Trinity?
Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31
Does not wisdom call,
and does not understanding raise her voice?
2 On the heights, beside the way,
at the crossroads she takes her stand;
3 beside the gates in front of the town,
at the entrance of the portals she cries out:
4 ‘To you, O people, I call,
and my cry is to all that live.
and does not understanding raise her voice?
2 On the heights, beside the way,
at the crossroads she takes her stand;
3 beside the gates in front of the town,
at the entrance of the portals she cries out:
4 ‘To you, O people, I call,
and my cry is to all that live.
22 The Lord created me at the beginning of his work,
the first of his acts of long ago.
23 Ages ago I was set up,
at the first, before the beginning of the earth.
24 When there were no depths I was brought forth,
when there were no springs abounding with water.
25 Before the mountains had been shaped,
before the hills, I was brought forth—
26 when he had not yet made earth and fields,
or the world’s first bits of soil.
27 When he established the heavens, I was there,
when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,
28 when he made firm the skies above,
when he established the fountains of the deep,
29 when he assigned to the sea its limit,
so that the waters might not transgress his command,
when he marked out the foundations of the earth,
30 then I was beside him, like a master worker;
and I was daily his delight,
rejoicing before him always,
31 rejoicing in his inhabited world
and delighting in the human race.
the first of his acts of long ago.

Matthew 28:16-20
Now the eleven
disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some
doubted. 18And Jesus
came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to
me. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything that I have
commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’
Romans 5:1-5
Therefore, since we
are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord
Jesus Christ, 2through
whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and
we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3And not only that, but we also
boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4and endurance produces character, and character
produces hope, 5and hope
does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts
through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

Conclusion
Understanding
the Trinity enables us comprehend the relationship we have with God; the
Trinity is also a model for us to follow in the different relationships we are
involved in.
Collect for Trinity
Sunday
Father, we praise you: through your
Word and Holy Spirit you created all things. You reveal your salvation in all
the world by sending to us Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. Through your Holy
Spirit you give us a share in your life and love. Fill us with the vision of
your glory, that we may always serve and praise you, Father, Son, and Holy
Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Prayer over the Gifts
Living God, receive all we offer you
this day. Grant that hearing your word and responding to your Spirit, we may
share in your divine life. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord.
Amen.
Eucharistic
Prayer 3
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and
praise.
Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of
heaven and earth; we give you thanks and praise, because, in the mystery you
disclose to us, you reveal your glory as the glory of your Son and the Holy
Spirit: three persons equal in majesty, undivided in splendour, yet one Lord,
one God, ever to be adored in your everlasting glory. Therefore with all the
company of heaven we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name.
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your
glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of
the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for
the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel
to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in
the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be
incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In
him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In
him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into
righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night he was handed over to
suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took
bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his
disciples, and said, “ Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do
this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and
when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of
you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for
the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of
me.”
Therefore, Father, according to his
command,
we remember his death,
we proclaim his resurrection,
we await his coming in glory;
and we offer our sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this
bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your
Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of
Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his
sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified by the Holy
Spirit.
In the fullness of time, reconcile all
things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where
you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the
firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our
salvation;
by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in
the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now
and for ever. Amen.
The
Lord’s Prayer
And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught
us, we are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed
be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give
us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those
who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.
Amen.
The
Breaking of the Bread
We break this bread
to share in the body of Christ.
We, being many, are one body,
for we all share in the one bread.
The
Communion
The gifts of God for the People of God.
Thanks be to God.
Prayer
after Communion
All your works praise you, O Lord.
And your faithful servants bless you.
Gracious God
we thank you for feeding us
with the body and blood of your Son
Jesus Christ.
May we, who share his body,
live his risen life;
we, who drink his cup,
bring life to others;
we, whom the Spirit lights,
give light to the world.
Keep us firm in the hope you have set
before us,
so that we and all your children shall
be free,
and the whole earth live to praise
your name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Blessing
The
love of the Lord Jesus draw you
to himself, the power of the Lord Jesus strengthen you in his service, the joy of the Lord Jesus
fill your
hearts; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy
Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
Dismissal
Go forth in the name of Christ.
Thanks be to God.
