Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: Alleluia! Sing to Jesus!
Theme: Lord of all
Topic: Sanctified in Jesus Christ
Reading: Isaiah 49:1-7
Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you
peoples from far away! The Lord called
me before I was born, while I was in my mother’s womb he named me. 2 He made my mouth
like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a
polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away. 3 And he said to me,
‘You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.’ 4 But I said, ‘I
have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet
surely my cause is with the Lord, and
my reward with my God.’ 5 And now the Lord says, who formed me in the womb to be his
servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to
him, for I am honoured in the sight of the Lord, and
my God has become my strength— 6 he says, ‘It is too light a thing that you
should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore
the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that
my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.’ 7 Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and
his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations, the slave
of rulers, ‘Kings shall see and stand up, princes, and they shall
prostrate themselves, because of the Lord,
who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.’
Introduction
Sanctification
simply means to be made holy. It is a
process and suggests participation of two entities: the One who makes holy and
the ones being made holy. God is holy
and He alone makes us holy. Holiness is
an integral attribute of God, and He wants us to be Holy. However, we cannot be holy in our own
strength. According to Scripture, our
righteous acts are like filthy rags.
This does not mean that we should not do good deeds, but that our good
deeds by themselves cannot make us holy; only God can. The other important aspect of sanctification
is that it is only in Christ that we are sanctified. Jesus took the punishment of our sins upon
Him, making it is possible for all who believe and follow Him to be made holy
by God. As we are made holy, if we
succumb to sin, we should seek forgiveness from the Lord; He is just and will
forgive us our sins. Remember,
sanctification is a journey not a destination; it is a process not an event. It starts the moment we decide to follow
Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.
Questions/Discussion
1) What is sanctification?
Isaiah 64:4-12
4 From ages past no one has heard, no
ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who
works for those who wait for him. 5 You meet those who gladly do right, those
who remember you in your ways. But you were angry, and we sinned; because
you hid yourself we transgressed. 6 We have all become like one who is
unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy cloth.
We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us
away. 7 There is no one who calls on
your name, or attempts to take hold of you; for you
have hidden your face from us, and have delivered us into the hand of our iniquity. 8 Yet, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you
are our potter; we are all the work of your hand. 9 Do not be exceedingly angry, O Lord, and do not remember iniquity for ever. Now
consider, we are all your people. 10 Your holy cities have become a
wilderness, Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem a
desolation. 11 Our holy and beautiful house, where
our ancestors praised you, has been burned by fire, and all our
pleasant places have become ruins. 12 After all this, will you restrain
yourself, O Lord? Will you keep silent, and punish us
so severely?
1 Corinthians 1:1-9
Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the
will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, 2 To the church of God that is in Corinth, to
those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with
all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both
their Lord and ours: 3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and
the Lord Jesus Christ. 4 I give thanks to my God always for you
because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, 5for in every way you
have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind— 6just as the testimony of Christ
has been strengthened among you— 7so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as
you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8He will also strengthen
you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus
Christ. 9God is faithful; by him you were called into the
fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Peter 1:13-23
Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline
yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you
when he is revealed. 14Like obedient children, do not be conformed to the
desires that you formerly had in ignorance. 15Instead, as he who
called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; 16for it is written, ‘You
shall be holy, for I am holy.’ 17 If you invoke as Father the one who judges all
people impartially according to their deeds, live in reverent fear during the
time of your exile. 18You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways
inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, 19but with the precious
blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. 20He was destined before
the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your
sake. 21Through him you have come to trust in God, who
raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are
set on God. 22 Now that you have purified your souls by your
obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another
deeply from the heart. 23You have been born anew, not of perishable but of
imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God.
2) What are the lessons for us in John
1:29-42 regarding being sanctified in Jesus Christ?
John 1:29-42
The next day he saw
Jesus coming towards him and declared, ‘Here is the Lamb of God who takes away
the sin of the world! 30This is he of whom I
said, “After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.” 31I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with
water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.’ 32And John testified, ‘I saw the Spirit descending
from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me
to baptize with water said to me, “He on whom you see the Spirit descend and
remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.” 34And I myself have seen and have testified that this
is the Son of God.’ 35 The next day John again was standing with two
of his disciples, 36and as he watched Jesus
walk by, he exclaimed, ‘Look, here is the Lamb of God!’ 37The two disciples heard him say this, and they
followed Jesus.38When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, ‘What
are you looking for?’ They said to him, ‘Rabbi’ (which translated means
Teacher), ‘where are you staying?’ 39He said to them, ‘Come
and see.’ They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him
that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. 40One of the two who heard John speak and followed him
was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.41He first found his brother Simon and said to him,
‘We have found the Messiah’ (which is translated Anointed). 42He brought Simon to
Jesus, who looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of John. You are to be
called Cephas’ (which is translated Peter).
3) Discuss some of the challenges to
being sanctified in Jesus Christ. How do
we overcome them?
Psalm 40:1-12
Refrain: Behold, I come
to do your will, O God.
I waited patiently upon the Lord; he
stooped to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the desolate pit, out of
the mire and clay; he set my feet upon a high cliff and made my footing sure. R He put a new
song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; many shall see, and stand in
awe, and put their trust in the Lord. R Happy are they who trust in the Lord! they do
not resort to evil spirits or turn to false gods. Great things are they that
you have done, O Lord my God! how great your wonders and your plans for us!
there is none who can be compared with you. Oh, that I could make them known
and tell them! but they are more than I can count. R In sacrifice
and offering you take no pleasure (you have given me ears to hear you);
Burnt-offering and sin-offering you have not required, and so I said,
"Behold, I come. R In the
roll of the book it is written concerning me: 'I love to do your will, O my
God; your law is deep in my heart.'" I proclaimed righteousness in the
great congregation; behold, I did not restrain my lips; and that, O Lord, you
know. R Your
righteousness have I not hidden in my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness
and your deliverance; I have not concealed your love and faithfulness from the
great congregation. You are the Lord; do not withhold your compassion from me;
let your love and your faithfulness keep me safe for ever. R
1 Thessalonians 5:12-28
But we appeal to you, brothers and sisters, to
respect those who labour among you, and have charge of you in the Lord and
admonish you; 13esteem them very highly in love because of their
work. Be at peace among yourselves. 14And we urge you, beloved, to admonish the
idlers, encourage the faint-hearted, help the weak, be patient with all of
them. 15See that none of you repays evil for evil, but
always seek to do good to one another and to all. 16Rejoice always, 17pray without ceasing,18give thanks in all
circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19Do not quench the
Spirit. 20Do not despise the words of prophets, 21but test everything;
hold fast to what is good; 22abstain from every form of evil. 23 May the God of
peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be
kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24The one who calls you is
faithful, and he will do this. 25 Beloved, pray
for us. 26 Greet all the brothers and sisters with a
holy kiss. 27I solemnly command you by the Lord that this letter
be read to all of them. 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with
you.
1 John 1:8-10, 2:1-6
If we say that we have
no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just
will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a
liar, and his word is not in us.
2:1-6 My little children, I am
writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we
have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; 2and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and
not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 Now by this we may be
sure that we know him, if we obey his commandments. 4Whoever says, ‘I have come to know him’, but does
not obey his commandments, is a liar, and in such a person the truth does not
exist; 5but whoever obeys his
word, truly in this person the love of God has reached perfection. By this we
may be sure that we are in him:6whoever says, ‘I abide in him’, ought to walk just
as he walked.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
Jesus took the
punishment of our sins upon Him, making it is possible for all who believe and
follow Him to be made holy by God the Father.
Closing Prayer (Collect
for Second Sunday after the Epiphany)
Almighty God, your Son our Saviour
Jesus Christ is the light of the world. May your people, illumined by your word
and sacraments, shine with the radiance of his glory, that he may be known,
worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
