Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?’ ⁵Jesus answered, ‘Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. ⁶What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. ⁷Do not be astonished that I said to you, “You must be born from above.” ⁸The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.’ ⁹Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can these things be?’ ¹⁰Jesus answered him, ‘Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? ¹¹ ‘Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. ¹²If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? ¹³No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. ¹⁴And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, ¹⁵that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. ¹⁶ ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. ¹⁷ ‘Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Introduction

In today’s study, we will turn our focus on how we should respond to God’s gift of Jesus Christ to us.  The Scripture makes it clear that we are saved by grace and not by works; saved through faith in the atoning power of the blood of the Lamb, and not by keeping the Law.  The foregoing neither implies that the Law is imperfect nor that we should continue to live in sin.  On the contrary, the Law is perfect in the sense of showing us how God wants us to live, but powerless in enabling us to be holy; and also merciless when we fail to keep the commandments of God.  Christ in response to Nicodemus’ comments said that no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born from above.  Although Jesus’ comment has been misrepresented in the past, born from above simply means new life in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.  The Prophetic Message includes new life for all who believe in the name of Jesus Christ.  It means change for a new life in God and to live for the Lord alone.

1. What is your understanding of being born again? 

Ezekiel 36:16-32

Romans 4:1-5, 13-17

What then are we to say was gained by Abraham, our ancestor according to the flesh? ²For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. ³For what does the scripture say? ‘Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.’ ⁴Now to one who works, wages are not reckoned as a gift but as something due. ⁵But to one who without works trusts him who justifies the ungodly, such faith is reckoned as righteousness. ¹³ For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. ¹⁴If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. ¹⁵For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. ¹⁶ For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, ¹⁷as it is written, ‘I have made you the father of many nations’)—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.

Titus 3:1-11

Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, ²to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarrelling, to be gentle, and to show every courtesy to everyone. ³For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, despicable, hating one another. ⁴But when the goodness and loving-kindness of God our Saviour appeared, ⁵he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. ⁶This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Saviour, ⁷so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. ⁸The saying is sure. 2. Why did Jesus say in John 3:3 we must be born again (from above)?

Romans 8:5-17

Genesis 12:1-4A

1 Peter 1:13-25

Conclusion

Christ says in the Scripture that we must be born of the Spirit to enter the kingdom of God.  May we continually yield our hearts to the Holy Spirit, that He may cleanse us through the power of in the Blood of the Lamb.

Closing Prayer (Collect for the Second Sunday in Lent)

Almighty God, whose Son was revealed in majesty before he suffered death upon the cross, give us faith to perceive his glory, that being strengthened by his grace we may be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned— ¹³sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when there is no law. ¹⁴Yet death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come. ¹⁵ But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one man’s trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many. ¹⁶And the free gift is not like the effect of the one man’s sin. Introduction

One of the major themes of the Prophetic Message is that we are sinners made righteous through faith in the atoning blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ.  This was not entirely understood over the years even during the earthly ministry of Christ.  However, following His resurrection, and through the power and teaching of the Holy Spirit, the Church has come to understand clearly the Prophetic Message regarding righteous living.  That there is none holy but God, and that He makes us righteous when we put our faith in His Son Jesus Christ.  This is difficult for our human legalistic minds to grasp.  This is why the Scripture declares that we are saved by grace.  We, who were enemies of God, have been reconciled to Him through His Son Jesus Christ.  The Scripture also declares that knowledge of this should make us boast only in the Lord.

1. What is your understanding of righteousness through Christ? 

Genesis 2:15-17, 3:1-7

The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. ¹⁶And the Lord God commanded the man, ‘You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; ¹⁷but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.’

3:1-7 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that theLord God had made. Ephesians 2:1-10

Hebrews 10:1-18

Since the law has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered year after year, make perfect those who approach. ²Otherwise, would they not have ceased being offered, since the worshippers, cleansed once for all, would no longer have any consciousness of sin? ³But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sin year after year. ⁴For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. ⁵Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, ‘Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me;

2. What are the lessons for us in Matthew 4:1-11 regarding righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ?  

Matthew 4:1-11

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. ²He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. ³The tempter came and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.’ ⁴But he answered, ‘It is written, “One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” ’ ⁵ Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, ⁶saying to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, “He will command his angels concerning you”, and “On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.” ’ ⁷Jesus said to him, ‘Again it is written, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” ’ ⁸ Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour; ⁹and he said to him, ‘All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.’ ¹⁰Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you, Satan! for it is written, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.” ’ ¹¹Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.

Hebrews 4:12-16, 7:23-28

3. What should be our response towards God’s gift of righteousness to us?  

Psalm 32:1-11

¹ Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven,
   whose sin is covered.
² Happy are those to whom the Lord imputes no iniquity,
   and in whose spirit there is no deceit. 

³ While I kept silence, my body wasted away
   through my groaning all day long.
⁴ For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;
   my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.
⁵ Then I acknowledged my sin to you,
   and I did not hide my iniquity;
I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord’,
   and you forgave the guilt of my sin.
⁶ Therefore let all who are faithful
   offer prayer to you;
at a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters
   shall not reach them.
⁷ You are a hiding-place for me;
   you preserve me from trouble;
   you surround me with glad cries of deliverance.

Hebrews 10:19-39

Intercession/Worship

Conclusion

It is through the grace of God that we are saved.  May we live in the righteousness that God has freely given us through faith in Jesus Christ; and in obedience to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Closing Prayer (Collect for the First Sunday in Lent)

Reading: 2 Peter 1:16-21

For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. ¹⁷For he received honour and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, ‘This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’ ¹⁸We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. ¹⁹ So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. ²⁰First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, ²¹because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

Introduction

The message of Jesus Christ, commonly known as the Gospel or good news, is often misunderstood to be fallacy.  On the contrary, the message of Christ was preceded by prophecies and shadow events recorded in Holy Scriptures, and backed by numerous proofs in the life of Christ.  Throughout history, God will hardly take any action without first announcing it (usually through prophecies and revelations).  This includes exiles, wars, enthronements and dethronements, and famine.  In the Book of Isaiah and other parts of Scripture, God made it clear that He will send His Son to die for the sins of the world.  However, when the Messiah came, He was rejected and then crucified, just as God planned it.  The prophetic message and central component of the Bible was realized in the birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ.  It is important that followers of Christ are reminded once in a while that God is not a myth.  God and the message of the Cross are not made up stories.  During this Lenten season, we will be looking into clues that point to the reality of God and of His love for all people in His Son Jesus Christ.

1. Why is the message of the Cross of Christ misconstrued sometimes? 

Matthew 7:15-20

‘Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. ¹⁶You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? ¹⁷In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. ¹⁸A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.¹⁹Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. ²⁰Thus you will know them by their fruits.

Philippians 3:7-16

Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. ⁸More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. 1 John 4:1-6

2. What are the lessons for us in Matthew 17:1-9 regarding the Majesty and authenticity of Christ? 

Matthew 17:1-9

Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves.²And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. ³Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. ⁴Then Peter said to Jesus, ‘Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’ ⁵While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!’ ⁶When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. ⁷But Jesus came and touched them, saying, ‘Get up and do not be afraid.’ ⁸And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. ⁹ As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, ‘Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.’

3. How does God reveal Himself to us today? 

Exodus 24:12-18

The Lord said to Moses, ‘Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.’ ¹³So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. ¹⁴To the elders he had said, ‘Wait here for us, until we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them.’ ¹⁵ Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. ¹⁶The glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. ¹⁷Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. ¹⁸Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. 2 Timothy 3:10-17

Conclusion

God desires us to know Him, and has revealed Himself to us through Jesus Christ.  May we through the power of the Holy Spirit continue to know Christ more and more every day that we may live according to the purpose God has for our lives.

Almighty God,

on the holy mount

you revealed to chosen witnesses your well-beloved Son,

wonderfully transfigured:

mercifully deliver us from the darkness of this world,

and change us into his likeness from glory to glory;

through Jesus Christ our Lord

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.  Amen.
