Theme: The Spirit-filled Life
Topic: The Life-giving
Spirit
Reading: 1 Kings
17:8-24
Then the
word of the Lord came to him, saying, 9‘Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to
Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you.’ 10So he set out and went to Zarephath. When
he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called
to her and said, ‘Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink.’ 11As she was going to bring it, he called
to her and said, ‘Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.’ 12But she said, ‘As the Lord your
God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little
oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and
prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.’ 13Elijah said to her, ‘Do not be afraid; go
and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to
me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son.14For thus says the Lord the
God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not
fail until the day that the Lord sends rain on the earth.’ 15She went and did as Elijah said, so that
she as well as he and her household ate for many days. 16The jar of meal was not emptied, neither
did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of theLord that he spoke by Elijah. 17 After this the
son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became ill; his illness was so
severe that there was no breath left in him. 18She then said to
Elijah, ‘What have you against me, O man of God? You have come to me to
bring my sin to remembrance, and to cause the death of my son!’ 19But he said to her, ‘Give me your son.’
He took him from her bosom, carried him up into the upper chamber where he was
lodging, and laid him on his own bed. 20He cried out to the Lord, ‘O Lordmy God, have you
brought calamity even upon the widow with whom I am staying, by killing her
son?’ 21Then he stretched
himself upon the child three times, and cried out to the Lord, ‘O Lord my God, let this child’s life come
into him again.’ 22The Lord listened to the voice of Elijah; the
life of the child came into him again, and he revived. 23Elijah took the child, brought him down
from the upper chamber into the house, and gave him to his mother; then Elijah
said, ‘See, your son is alive.’ 24So the woman said to
Elijah, ‘Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in
your mouth is truth.’
Introduction
The Scriptures makes it
clear that it is God’s strong desire that we have life and live it
abundantly. When sin came into the world
through Adam and Eve, humanity became estranged to the communion it has with
the Creator. God in His infinite mercy
sent His only begotten Son to die on the cross, paying the price for our
sinfulness and reconciling us to the Lord.
However, with the advent of sin also came satanic influences including
illness and all manner of fear. When we
are in Christ, although the enemy will attack us and our minds through all
kinds of means, we are transformed because we serve a life-giving God. As we come to believe in His power to save,
the Lord will make a way for us even where there seems to be no way. Nothing is impossible with Him; whatever
dreams we have, even if they appear unattainable, God will bring them to life
again, especially as we put our trust in Him.
Questions/Discussion
1. Discuss how sinfulness brings about
death.
Ezekiel 18:1-4
The word of the Lord came to me: 2What
do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, ‘The
parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’? 3As I
live, says the Lord God, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. 4Know
that all lives are mine; the life of the parent as well as the life of the
child is mine: it is only the person who sins that shall die.
John 15:1-8
‘I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine-grower. 2He
removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit
he prunes to make it bear more
fruit. 3You
have already been cleansed by the
word that I have spoken to you. 4Abide
in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless
it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. 5I am
the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much
fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. 6Whoever
does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches
are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7If
you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it
will be done for you. 8My
Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.
Romans 5:12-14, 19-23
Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man,
and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned— 13sin
was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when there is
no law. 14Yet
death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were
not like the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come.19For
just as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one
man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. 20But
law came in, with the result that the trespass multiplied; but where sin
increased, grace abounded all the more, 21so
that, just as sin exercised dominion in death, so grace might also exercise
dominion through justification leading
to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Galatians 6:7-10
Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever
you sow. 8If
you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you
sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. 9So
let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time,
if we do not give up. 10So
then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and
especially for those of the family of faith.
2. What lessons can we learn from the life of
St. Paul?
Acts 7:59-60, 8:1-3,
9:1-15
While
they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ 60Then he knelt down and cried out in a
loud voice, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them.’ When he had said this,
he died. 81And Saul approved of
their killing him. That day a severe persecution began against the church in
Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout the
countryside of Judea and Samaria. 2Devout men buried
Stephen and made loud lamentation over him. 3But Saul was ravaging
the church by entering house after house; dragging off both men and women, he
committed them to prison.
9:1-15 Meanwhile Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the
disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2and asked him for letters to the
synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or
women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. 3Now as he was going along and approaching
Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4He fell to the ground and heard a voice
saying to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?’5He asked, ‘Who are you,
Lord?’ The reply came, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 6But get up and enter the city, and you
will be told what you are to do.’ 7The men who were
travelling with him stood speechless because they heard the voice but saw no
one. 8Saul got up from the
ground, and though his eyes were open, he could see nothing; so they led him by
the hand and brought him into Damascus. 9For three days he was
without sight, and neither ate nor drank. 10 Now there was a
disciple in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision,
‘Ananias.’ He answered, ‘Here I am, Lord.’ 11The Lord said to him,
‘Get up and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look
for a man of Tarsus named Saul. At this moment he is praying, 12and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay
his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.’ 13But Ananias answered, ‘Lord, I have heard
from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints in
Jerusalem; 14and here he has
authority from the chief priests to bind all who invoke your name.’ 15But the Lord said to him, ‘Go, for he is
an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gentiles and kings and
before the people of Israel;
Galatians 1:11-24
For I
want you to know, brothers and sisters, that
the gospel that was proclaimed by me is not of human origin; 12for I did not receive it from a human
source, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus
Christ. 13 You have heard, no doubt, of my earlier life in Judaism. I
was violently persecuting the church of God and was trying to destroy it. 14I advanced in Judaism beyond many among
my people of the same age, for I was far more zealous for the traditions of my
ancestors. 15But when God, who had
set me apart before I was born and called me through his grace, was pleased 16to reveal his Son to me, so that I might proclaim him among the
Gentiles, I did not confer with any human being, 17nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who
were already apostles before me, but I went away at once into Arabia, and
afterwards I returned to Damascus. 18 Then after three
years I did go up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and stayed with him for fifteen
days; 19but I did not see any
other apostle except James the Lord’s brother. 20In what I am writing to you, before God,
I do not lie! 21Then I went into the
regions of Syria and Cilicia,22and I was still unknown by sight to the churches of Judea that
are in Christ; 23they only heard it
said, ‘The one who formerly was persecuting us is now proclaiming the faith he
once tried to destroy.’ 24And they glorified God
because of me.
3. How do we allow the life-giving Spirit in our
lives?
Luke 7:11-17
Soon afterwards he
went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him. 12As he
approached the gate of the town, a man who had died was being carried out. He
was his mother’s only son, and she was a widow; and with her was a large crowd
from the town. 13When
the Lord saw her, he had compassion for her and said to her, ‘Do not weep.’ 14Then
he came forward and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said,
‘Young man, I say to you, rise!’15The dead man sat up and began to speak, and
Jesus gave him to his mother. 16Fear
seized all of them; and they glorified God, saying, ‘A great prophet has risen
among us!’ and ‘God has looked favourably on his people!’ 17This
word about him spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding country.
John 3:1-6, 14-21,
10:7-10
Now there
was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews.2He came to Jesus by night and said to him, ‘Rabbi, we
know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these
signs that you do apart from the presence of God.’ 3Jesus answered him, ‘Very truly, I tell
you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.’ 4Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can anyone be
born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb
and be born?’ 5Jesus answered, ‘Very
truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of
water and Spirit. 6What is born of the
flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. 14And just as Moses lifted up the serpent
in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15that whoever believes in him may have eternal
life. 16 ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so
that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 ‘Indeed, God did
not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the
world might be saved through him. 18Those who believe in
him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already,
because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19And this is the judgement, that the light
has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because
their deeds were evil. 20For all who do evil
hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be
exposed. 21But those who do what
is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have
been done in God.’
10:7-10 So again Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, I am
the gate for the sheep. 8All who came before me
are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. 9I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will
be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. 10The thief comes only to steal and kill
and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
2 Corinthians 5:1-21
For we
know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from
God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2For in this tent we groan, longing to be
clothed with our heavenly dwelling— 3if indeed, when we
have taken it off we will not be
found naked. 4For while we are still
in this tent, we groan under our burden, because we wish not to be unclothed
but to be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5He who has prepared us for this very
thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. 6 So we are always
confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are
away from the Lord— 7for we walk by faith,
not by sight. 8Yes, we do have
confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the
Lord. 9So whether we are at
home or away, we make it our aim to please him. 10For all of us must appear before the
judgement seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for what has been
done in the body, whether good or evil. 11 Therefore,
knowing the fear of the Lord, we try to persuade others; but we ourselves are
well known to God, and I hope that we are also well known to your consciences. 12We are not commending ourselves to you
again, but giving you an opportunity to boast about us, so that you may be able
to answer those who boast in outward appearance and not in the heart. 13For if we are beside ourselves, it is for
God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14For the love of Christ urges us on,
because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. 15And he died for all, so that those who
live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised
for them. 16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human
point of view; even though we
once knew Christ from a human point of view, we
know him no longer in that way. 17So if anyone is in
Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see,
everything has become new! 18All this is from God,
who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of
reconciliation; 19that is, in Christ God
was reconciling the world to himself, not
counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of
reconciliation to us. 20So we are ambassadors
for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf
of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21For our sake he made
him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness
of God.

our lives.
Prayer (Collect for
third Sunday after Pentecost)
O God, you have assured
the human family of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Deliver us
from the death of sin and raise us to new life in him, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
The Peace
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.
The Celebration of the
Eucharist
The Prayer over the
Gifts
Let us pray,
Faithful
God, accept all we offer you this day. Kindle in us the flame of love by which
your apostle Barnabas bore witness to the gospel. This we ask in the name of
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Great Thanksgiving
Eucharistic Prayer 3
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth; we
give you thanks and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, because in the
fellowship of your saints you have given us a glorious pledge of the hope of
our calling. Therefore we join our voices with theirs as earth and heaven unite
to proclaim the glory of your name.
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you
have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your
Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus
your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin
Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered
us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought
us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into
life.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he
freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks
to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “ Take, eat: this
is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given
thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood
of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of
sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore, Father, according to his command,
we remember his death,
we proclaim his resurrection,
we await his coming in glory;
and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord
of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these
gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of
the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made
acceptable in him, may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make
them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons
and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the
head of the Church, and the author of our salvation;
by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy
Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against
us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
The
Breaking of the Bread
“I am the bread of life,”
says the Lord.
“Whoever comes to me will never be hungry;
whoever believes in me will never thirst.”
Taste and see that the Lord is good;
happy are they who trust in him!
The Communion
The gifts of God for the People of God.
Thanks be to God.
Prayer after Communion
Let us pray,
God
of justice, may we who have heard your word and received new life at your
table, bear witness to your truth in the world, so that all may come to share
in your kingdom. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.
The doxology
Glory to God,
whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask
or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in
Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.
Blessing
May love, joy and peace be yours in abundance; and the
blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among
you and remain with you always. Amen.
Dismissal
Go forth in the name of Christ.
Thanks be to God.
