Opening Prayer/Worship
Song:
My God is able,
He is able
I know He’s
able
I know my God
is able to carry me through (2X)
For He has
healed the broken-hearted
He set the
captive free
He healed the
sick, raised the dead and walked upon the sea
My God is able,
He is able
I know He’s
able
I know my God
is able to carry me through
Theme: The Spirit-filled Life
Topic: Undivided Faith in Christ
Reading: Galatians 1:1-12
Paul an apostle—sent neither by human
commission nor from human authorities, but through Jesus Christ and God the
Father, who raised him from the dead— 2and all the
members of God’s family who are
with me, To the churches of Galatia: 3 Grace
to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4who gave himself for our sins to set us free from the
present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5to whom be the glory for ever and ever. Amen. 6 I
am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you in the
grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7not that there is another gospel, but there are some who
are confusing you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8But even if we or an angelfrom heaven should proclaim to
you a gospel contrary to what we proclaimed to you, let that one be accursed! 9As we have said before, so now I repeat, if anyone
proclaims to you a gospel contrary to what you received, let that one be
accursed! 10 Am I now seeking human approval, or God’s approval?
Or am I trying to please people? If I were still pleasing people, I would not
be a servant of Christ. 11 For I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel that was proclaimed by
me is not of human origin; 12for I did not
receive it from a human source, nor was I taught it, but I received it through
a revelation of Jesus Christ.
Introduction
In our journey of faith in the Lord, we will normally experience two significant
pulls- towards God or away from Him.
These pulls are in opposition and have distinct characteristics. Without undivided faith in Christ, we will be
drawn away from the Lord. Several
factors tend to pull us away from God and include lusts of the flesh, fears,
disappointments, satanic attacks, trials, temptations, false prophets etc. For us to keep living in the purpose for
which God has called us, despite negative pulls, we need to keep our eyes on
Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Without absolute faith in Him, we will fall by
the wayside. Although situations will
arise that may shake us, and even make us wonder where God is, if we hold unto
our faith in Christ, He will carry us through.
Questions/Discussion
1. What is your interpretation of undivided faith in Christ?
John 20:24-31
But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of
the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’
But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put
my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not
believe.’ 26 A week later his disciples were again in the house,
and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood
among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 27Then he said
to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put
it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’ 28Thomas
answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ 29Jesus said to
him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have
not seen and yet have come to believe.’ 30 Now
Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not
written in this book. 31But these are
written so that you may come to believe that
Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of
God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.
Hebrews 11:1-12, 32-40
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped
for, the conviction of things not seen. 2Indeed, by
faith our ancestors received
approval. 3By faith we
understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is
seen was made from things that are not visible. 4 By
faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice
than Cain’s. Through this he received approval as righteous, God himself giving
approval to his gifts; he died, but through his faith he still speaks. 5By faith Enoch was taken so that he did not experience
death; and ‘he was not found, because God had taken him.’ For it was attested
before he was taken away that ‘he had pleased God.’ 6And without faith it is impossible to please God, for
whoever would approach him must believe that he exists and that he rewards
those who seek him. 7By faith Noah,
warned by God about events as yet unseen, respected the warning and built an
ark to save his household; by this he condemned the world and became an heir to
the righteousness that is in accordance with faith. 8 By
faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to
receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. 9By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been
promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who
were heirs with him of the same promise. 10For he looked
forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11By faith he received power of procreation, even though he
was too old—and Sarah herself was barren—because he considered him faithful who
had promised. 12Therefore from
one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, ‘as many as
the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.’
32 And what more should I say? For time would fail me
to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the
prophets— 33who through
faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises, shut the
mouths of lions, 34quenched
raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness,
became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. 35Women received their dead by resurrection. Others were
tortured, refusing to accept release, in order to obtain a better resurrection. 36Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and
imprisonment. 37They were
stoned to death, they were sawn in two, they
were killed by the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats,
destitute, persecuted, tormented— 38of whom the
world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and
holes in the ground. 39 Yet all these, though they were commended for their
faith, did not receive what was promised, 40since God had
provided something better so that they would not, without us, be made perfect.
2. Describe some of the factors and experiences that may strengthen or
shake our faith in Christ.
1 Kings 18:20-21, 30-39
So
Ahab sent to all the Israelites, and assembled the prophets at Mount
Carmel. 21Elijah then came near to all the people, and said, ‘How long
will you go limping with two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if
Baal, then follow him.’ The people did not answer him a word. 30 Then
Elijah said to all the people, ‘Come closer to me’; and all the people came
closer to him. First he repaired the altar of the Lord that had been thrown down; 31Elijah took
twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to
whom the word of the Lordcame,
saying, ‘Israel shall be your name’; 32with the stones he built an altar in the name
of the Lord. Then he made a
trench around the altar, large enough to contain two measures of seed. 33Next he put the
wood in order, cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood. He said, ‘Fill
four jars with water and pour it on the burnt-offering and on the wood.’34Then he said,
‘Do it a second time’; and they did it a second time. Again he said, ‘Do it a
third time’; and they did it a third time, 35so that the
water ran all round the altar, and filled the trench also with water. 36 At the
time of the offering of the oblation, the prophet Elijah came near and said,
‘O Lord, God of Abraham,
Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, that I
am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your bidding. 37Answer me,
O Lord, answer me, so that
this people may know that you, O Lord,
are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.’ 38Then the fire
of the Lordfell and consumed
the burnt-offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and even licked up the
water that was in the trench. 39When all the people saw it, they fell on their
faces and said, ‘The Lord indeed
is God; the Lord indeed
is God.’
Matthew 7:21-29
‘Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord”,
will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only one who does the will of my Father
in heaven. 22On that day
many will say to me, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast
out demons in your name, and do many deeds of power in your name?” 23Then I will declare to them, “I never knew you; go away
from me, you evildoers.” 24 ‘Everyone then who hears these words of mine and
acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. 25The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and
beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. 26And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not
act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew
and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its fall!’ 28 Now when Jesus had finished saying these things,
the crowds were astounded at his teaching, 29for he taught
them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.
Luke 7:1-10
After Jesus had finished all his sayings in the
hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. 2A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly, and who
was ill and close to death. 3When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him,
asking him to come and heal his slave. 4When they came to Jesus, they appealed to him earnestly,
saying, ‘He is worthy of having you do this for him, 5for
he loves our people, and it is he who built our synagogue for us.’ 6And
Jesus went with them, but when he was not far from the house, the centurion
sent friends to say to him, ‘Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy
to have you come under my roof; 7therefore I did not presume to come to you. But only speak
the word, and let my servant be healed. 8For I also am a man set under authority, with soldiers under
me; and I say to one, “Go”, and he goes, and to another, “Come”, and he comes,
and to my slave, “Do this”, and the slave does it.’ 9When
Jesus heard this he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd that followed
him, he said, ‘I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.’ 10When
those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good
health.
3. How do we continually build up our faith in the Lord?
Mark 9:14-29
When they came to the
disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and some scribes arguing with
them. 15When the whole crowd saw him, they were immediately overcome with
awe, and they ran forward to greet him. 16He asked them, ‘What are you arguing about with them?’ 17Someone
from the crowd answered him, ‘Teacher, I brought you my son; he has a spirit
that makes him unable to speak;18and
whenever it seizes him, it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth
and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, but they could
not do so.’ 19He answered them, ‘You faithless generation, how much longer
must I be among you? How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him to me.’ 20And
they brought the boyto him. When the spirit saw him, immediately it threw the
boy into convulsions, and he fell
on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. 21Jesus asked the father, ‘How long has this
been happening to him?’ And he said, ‘From childhood. 22It
has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you
are able to do anything, have pity on us and help us.’ 23Jesus
said to him, ‘If you are able!—All things can be done for the one who believes.’ 24Immediately
the father of the child cried out, ‘I
believe; help my unbelief!’ 25When Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked
the unclean spirit, saying to it, ‘You spirit that keep this boy from speaking
and hearing, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again!’ 26After
crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a
corpse, so that most of them said, ‘He is dead.’ 27But
Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he was able to stand. 28When
he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, ‘Why could we not
cast it out?’ 29He said to them, ‘This kind can come out only through
prayer.’
Colossians 2:6-15
As you therefore have received Christ Jesus
the Lord, continue to live your lives in
him, 7rooted and
built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught,
abounding in thanksgiving. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through
philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the
elemental spirits of the universe, and
not according to Christ. 9For in him the
whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10and you have
come to fullness in him, who is the head of every ruler and authority. 11In him also you were circumcised with a spiritual
circumcision, by putting off the
body of the flesh in the circumcision of Christ; 12when you were buried with him in baptism, you were also
raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the
dead. 13And when you
were dead in trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive together with him, when he
forgave us all our trespasses, 14erasing the
record that stood against us with its legal demands. He set this aside, nailing
it to the cross. 15He disarmed the rulers and authorities and made a
public example of them, triumphing over them in it.
Hebrews 12:1-3
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so
great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that
clings so closely, and let us run
with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith,
who for the sake of the joy that
was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his
seat at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such hostility against himself
from sinners,so that you may not grow weary or lose heart.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
Without faith, we cannot please the Lord. May we live our lives in absolute faith that
God is who He says He is, and will bring to pass His promises to us in Christ.
Closing Prayer
Father, grant us the grace to have and demonstrate undivided faith in
your Son Jesus Christ, living for Him all the days of our lives. We ask this through our Lord and Saviour
Jesus Christ. Amen.
