Hymn: Now the Day is Over
Theme: The Body of Christ
Topic: Be Prepared
Reading:
1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and
sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. 2For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord
will come like a thief in the night.3When they say, ‘There is peace and security’, then sudden
destruction will come upon them, as labour pains come upon a pregnant woman,
and there will be no escape! 4But you, beloved, are
not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; 5for you are all children of light and children of the day; we
are not of the night or of darkness. 6So then, let us not fall asleep as others do, but
let us keep awake and be sober; 7for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who
are drunk get drunk at night. 8But since we belong to the day, let us be sober,
and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. 9For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining
salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10who died for us, so that whether we are awake or
asleep we may live with him. 11Therefore encourage one another and build up each
other, as indeed you are doing.
Introduction
According to Scriptures, we are called by God to be prepared at all
times for the second coming of His Son Jesus Christ (Parousia). This does not
mean being too careful or not living as we would normally do, but to live each
moment as if it were our last. It means being the light and salt of the world
at all times. It means loving God and the people He put in our lives every day
of our lives. Although this sounds good to accomplish, it could be very
difficult, especially in the face of injustice, hatred and cruelty.
Notwithstanding the challenges in being prepared at all times, we have grace
from God to be victorious. We have help and guidance from the Holy Spirit to be
God’s voice and hands in the world He loves so much. We have power from God to
be prepared for the second coming of Christ, and dare not trust in our own
strength.
Questions/Discussion
1. Why
do we need to be prepared for the second coming of Christ Jesus?
Mark
13:32-37
‘But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels
in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33Beware, keep alert; for
you do not know when the time will come. 34It is like a man going on a journey, when he
leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the
doorkeeper to be on the watch. 35Therefore, keep awake—for you do not know when the
master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow,
or at dawn, 36or else he may find you asleep when he comes
suddenly. 37And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake.’

Peter 2:1-13
But false prophets also arose
among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will
secretly bring in destructive opinions. They will even deny the Master who
bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2Even so, many will follow their
licentious ways, and because of these teachers the way of truth will be
maligned. 3And in their greed they will
exploit you with deceptive words. Their condemnation, pronounced against them
long ago, has not been idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
4 For
if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and
committed them to chains of deepest darkness to be kept until the
judgement; 5and if he did not spare the
ancient world, even though he saved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven
others, when he brought a flood on a world of the ungodly; 6and if by turning the cities of
Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinctionand made them an
example of what is coming to the ungodly; 7and if he rescued Lot, a
righteous man greatly distressed by the licentiousness of the lawless 8(for that righteous man, living
among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by their lawless
deeds that he saw and heard), 9then the Lord knows how to
rescue the godly from trial, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until
the day of judgement 10—especially those who indulge
their flesh in depraved lust, and who despise authority.
Bold and wilful, they are not afraid to slander the glorious
ones, 11whereas angels, though greater
in might and power, do not bring against them a slanderous judgement from the
Lord. 12These people, however, are like
irrational animals, mere creatures of instinct, born to be caught and killed.
They slander what they do not understand, and when those creatures are
destroyed, they also will be destroyed, 13suffering the penalty for
doing wrong. They count it a pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are blots
and blemishes, revelling in their dissipation while they feast with you.

Peter 3:1-18
This
is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you; in them I am trying to
arouse your sincere intention by reminding you 2that
you should remember the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets, and the
commandment of the Lord and Saviour spoken through your apostles.3First
of all you must understand this, that in the last days scoffers will come,
scoffing and indulging their own lusts 4and
saying, ‘Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since our ancestors died, all things continue as they were from
the beginning of creation!’ 5They
deliberately ignore this fact, that by the word of God heavens existed long ago
and an earth was formed out of water and by means of water, 6through
which the world of that time was deluged with water and perished. 7But
by the same word the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire,
being kept until the day of judgement and destruction of the godless.
8 But
do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a
thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. 9The
Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient
with you, not wanting any to
perish, but all to come to repentance. 10But
the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away
with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth
and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.
11 Since
all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of people ought you
to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness,12waiting
for and hastening the coming of
the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved,
and the elements will melt with fire? 13But,
in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where
righteousness is at home.
14 Therefore,
beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at
peace, without spot or blemish; 15and
regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul
wrote to you according to the wisdom given to him, 16speaking
of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to
understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as
they do the other scriptures. 17You
therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned, beware that you are not carried
away with the error of the lawless and lose your own stability. 18But
grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be
the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
2. What
are the lessons for us in Matthew 25:14-30 regarding being prepared?
Matthew
25:14-30
‘For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his
slaves and entrusted his property to them; 15to one he gave five talents, to
another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went
away.16The one who had
received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five
more talents. 17In the same way, the one who had the two talents
made two more talents. 18But the one who had received the one talent went
off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. 19After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled
accounts with them. 20Then the one who had received the five talents
came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, “Master, you handed over to
me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.”21His master said to him, “Well done, good and
trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in
charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.” 22And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying,
“Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.” 23His master said to him, “Well done, good and trustworthy
slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of
many things; enter into the joy of your master.” 24Then the one who had received the one talent also came
forward, saying, “Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you
did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed;25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the
ground. Here you have what is yours.” 26But his master replied, “You wicked and lazy slave!
You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not
scatter? 27Then you ought to have invested my money with the
bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. 28So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the
ten talents. 29For to all those who have, more will be given, and
they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they
have will be taken away. 30As for this worthless slave, throw him into the
outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
3. Discuss
some of the challenges to being prepared for the second coming of Christ, and
how to overcome them.
Judges 4:1-7
The Israelites again did what
was evil in the sight of the Lord,
after Ehud died. 2So the Lord sold them into the hand of
King Jabin of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor; the commander of his army was
Sisera, who lived in Harosheth-ha-goiim. 3Then the Israelites cried out
to theLord for help; for he
had nine hundred chariots of iron, and had oppressed the Israelites cruelly for
twenty years.
4 At
that time Deborah, a prophetess, wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel. 5She used to sit under the palm
of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the
Israelites came up to her for judgement. 6She sent and summoned Barak son
of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali, and said to him, ‘The Lord, the God of Israel, commands you,
“Go, take position at Mount Tabor, bringing ten thousand from the tribe of
Naphtali and the tribe of Zebulun. 7I will draw out Sisera, the
general of Jabin’s army, to meet you by the Wadi Kishon with his chariots and
his troops; and I will give him into your hand.” ’
Psalm
123:1-4
Refrain: Our eyes
look to the Lord our God, until he shows us his mercy.
To
you I lift up my eyes, to you enthroned in the heavens. As the eyes of servants
look to the hand of their masters, and the eyes of a maid to the hand of her
mistress, So our eyes look to the Lord our God, until he show us his mercy. R Have mercy upon us, O Lord,
have mercy, for we have had more than enough of contempt, Too much of the scorn
of the indolent rich, and of the derision of the proud. R
1
Peter 5:1-11
Now as an elder myself and a
witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory to
be revealed, I exhort the elders among you 2to tend the flock of God that
is in your charge, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion but
willingly, as God would have you do it—not for sordid gain but eagerly. 3Do not lord it over those in
your charge, but be examples to the flock. 4And when the chief shepherd
appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away. 5In the same way, you who are
younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you must clothe
yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for
‘God opposes the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.’
but gives grace to the humble.’
6 Humble
yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in
due time. 7Cast all your anxiety on him,
because he cares for you. 8Discipline yourselves; keep
alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking
for someone to devour.9Resist him, steadfast in your
faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world
are undergoing the same kinds of suffering.10And after you have suffered for
a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory
in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. 11To him be the power for ever
and ever. Amen.

Closing
Prayer (Collect for Twenty-third Sunday after Pentecost)
Almighty
God, you sent your Son Jesus Christ to be the light of the world. Free us from
all that darkens and ensnares us, and bring us to eternal light and joy; through
the power of him who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and for ever. Amen.
