Prayer/Worship Hymn: The
Church’s One Foundation
Theme: The Body of Christ Topic: Church
Triumphant
Reading: Revelation
7:9-17
9After this I looked,
and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every
nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding
palm branches in their hands. 10And they cried out in a loud voice:
“Salvation belongs to
our God,
who sits on the throne,
and to the Lamb.”
11All the angels were
standing around the throne and around the elders and
the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and
worshiped God, 12saying:
“Amen!
Praise and glory
and wisdom and thanks
and honor
and power and strength
be to our God for ever
and ever.
Amen!”
13Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes—who
are they, and where did they come from?”
14I answered, “Sir, you
know.”
And he said, “These are
they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes
and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
15Therefore,
“they are before the
throne of God
and serve him day and
night in his temple;
and he who sits on the
throne
will shelter them with
his presence.
16‘Never again will
they hunger;
never again will they
thirst.
The sun will not beat down on them,’
nor any scorching heat.
17For the Lamb at the
center of the throne
will be their shepherd;
‘he will lead them to
springs of living water.’
‘And God will wipe away
every tear from their eyes.’ ”
Introduction
Christians are members of one body, generally referred to as the
Church or Body of Christ. This implies that we are all connected to
each other through Christ, the Head of the Church,
and the Author and Finisher of our faith.
In the coming weeks, we will be looking at
some of the attributes of the Church of Christ.
The Body of Christ is normally described in
twofold: Church Triumphant (Christians
that have slept/died in the
Lord) and Church Militant
(Christians still living). In today’s
study, we will be discussing the Church
Triumphant. Today’s
study also highlights how we can emulate the examples
Christians who have slept in the Lord set for us, and the reward that await all those who put their faith in
the Lord.
Questions/Discussion
1. How will you
describe the Church?
Colossians 1:15-23
15The Son is the image
of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16For in him all things
were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether
thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all
things have been created through him and for him. 17He is before all things,
and in him all things hold together. 18And he is the head of the body, the
church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in
everything he might have the supremacy. 19For God was
pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20and through him to reconcile
to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making
peace through his blood, shed on the cross. 21Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your
evil behavior. 22But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body
through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from
accusation— 23if you continue in your faith, established
and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the
gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under
heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
13Brothers
and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in
death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14For
we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will
bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15According
to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until
the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen
asleep. 16For the Lord
himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the
archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise
first. 17After that, we
who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the
clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore
encourage one another with these words.
1 John 3:1-3
1See
what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called
children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us
is that it did not know him. 2Dear
friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made
known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall
see him as he is. 3All who have
this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
2. What are the
lessons for us in Matthew 5:1-12 regarding the Body
of Christ?
Matthew 5:1-12
1Now when Jesus saw the
crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him,
2and he began to teach them.
He said:
3 “Blessed are the poor
in spirit,
for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who
mourn,
for they will be
comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit
the earth.
6 Blessed are those who
hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be
filled.
7 Blessed are the
merciful,
for they will be shown
mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure
in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the
peacemakers,
for they will be called
children of God.
10 Blessed are those
who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you
when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against
you because of me. 12Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who
were before you.
3. In what ways can we emulate the Church
Triumphant in living for Christ? What
are the rewards?
Psalm 34:1-10, 22
REFRAIN Taste and see that the Lord is good;
happy are they who trust in him.
I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise
shall ever be in my mouth.
I will glory in the Lord; let the humble hear and
rejoice. R
Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord; let
us exalt his name together.
I sought the Lord, and he answered me and
delivered me out of all my terror. R
Look upon him and be radiant, and let not your
faces be ashamed.
I called in my affliction and the Lord heard me
and saved me from all my troubles. R
The angel of the Lord encompasses those who fear
him, and he will deliver them.
Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are
they who trust in him! R
Fear the Lord, you that are his saints, for those
who fear him lack nothing.
The young lions lack and suffer hunger, but those
who seek the Lord lack nothing that is good.
The Lord ransoms the life of his servants, and
none will be punished who trust in him. R
Romans 12:3-8
3For
by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more
highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in
accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4For
just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all
have the same function, 5so
in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the
others. 6We have
different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is
prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7if
it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8if
it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give
generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it
cheerfully.
Colossians 1:24-29
24Now I rejoice in what
I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what
is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body,
which is the church. 25I have become its servant by the commission God gave me
to present to you the word of God in its fullness— 26the mystery that has been
kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now
disclosed to the Lord’s people. 27To them God has chosen to make known among
the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the
hope of glory. 28He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone
fully mature in Christ. 29To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy
Christ so powerfully works in me.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
In
Christ, though many, we form one body, and each
member belongs to all the others.
Closing Prayer (Collect for All Saints)
Almighty God, whose people are knit together in
one holy Church, the mystical Body of your Son, grant us grace to follow your
blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible
joys you have prepared for those who love you; through your Son Jesus Christ our
Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for
ever. Amen.
