Hymn:
Now the Day is Over
Theme:
The Body of Christ
Topic: Blessing of Peace
Reading:
Psalm 29:1-11
Refrain: The Lord
shall give his people the blessing of peace.
Ascribe to the Lord, you gods, ascribe to
the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. R The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the
God of glory thunders; the Lord is upon the mighty waters. The voice of the
Lord is a powerful voice; the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendour. R The
voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees; the Lord breaks the cedars of
Lebanon; He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Mount Hermon like a young wild
ox. R The
voice of the Lord splits the flames of fire; the voice of the Lord shakes the
wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord
makes the oak trees writhe and strips the forests bare. And in the temple of
the Lord all are crying, "Glory!" R The Lord sits enthroned above the flood; the
Lord sits enthroned as king for evermore. The Lord shall give strength to his
people; the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. R
Introduction
One
of the most striking aspects of belonging to Christ is the blessing of peace
that God gives to all believers. The
Scripture describes this peace as incomprehensible. What this means is that despite troubles,
stress, uncertainties, and turmoil around us, we remain calm and trust that the
Lord is with us and will see us through.
Peace from the Lord is not the absence of trouble but rather calm and
trusting disposition through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the face of
life’s problems and challenges. One of
the root causes of restiveness and lack of peace is fear. Fear could also be equated to
faithlessness. Regret and guilt of the
past, and fear of the present and future can diminish our faith in God hence
limiting the work of the Holy Spirit in us.
This is why God says to us in numerous parts of Scripture: FEAR NOT! The blessing of peace from our Father drives
out fear and strengthens us to be faithful to His calling on our lives.
Questions/Discussion
1.
How will you describe the blessing of peace from the Lord?
Genesis
1:1-5
In the beginning when God created the
heavens and the earth, 2the
earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a
wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was
light. 4And
God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light Day, and the darkness he
called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
John
14:15-27
‘If you love me, you will keep my
commandments. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you
another Advocate, to be with you for ever.17This is the Spirit
of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows
him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. 18 ‘I
will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. 19In a little
while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you
also will live. 20On that day you will know that I am in my
Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21They who have my
commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be
loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.’ 22Judas
(not Iscariot) said to him, ‘Lord, how is it that you will reveal yourself to
us, and not to the world?’ 23Jesus answered him, ‘Those who
love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to
them and make our home with them. 24Whoever does not love me
does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the
Father who sent me. 25 ‘I have said these things to you while I
am still with you. 26But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you
of all that I have said to you.27Peace I leave with you; my peace I
give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be
troubled, and do not let them be afraid.
Philippians
4:4-9
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will
say, Rejoice. 5Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The
Lord is near. 6Do not worry about anything, but in everything
by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to
God. 7And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally,
beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just,
whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is
any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these
things. 9Keep on doing the things that you have learned and
received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.
2.
What are the lessons for us in Mark 1:4-11 regarding the blessing of peace?
Mark
1:4-11
John the
baptizer appeared in the
wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5And people from the whole
Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and
were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.6Now
John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and
he ate locusts and wild honey. 7He
proclaimed, ‘The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not
worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.’ 9 In
those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the
Jordan. 10And just as
he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit
descending like a dove on him.11And a voice came from heaven, ‘You
are my Son, the Beloved; with you
I am well pleased.’
John
16:29-33
His disciples said, ‘Yes, now you are speaking plainly, not in any
figure of speech! 30Now we
know that you know all things, and do not need to have anyone question you; by
this we believe that you came from God.’31Jesus answered them, ‘Do you now believe? 32The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you
will be scattered, each one to his home, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am
not alone because the Father is with me. 33I have
said this to you, so that in me you may have peace. In the world you face
persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world!’
3.
Discuss some of the challenges to receiving the blessing of peace. How do we overcome them?
Acts
19:1-7
While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the inland regions and
came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. 2He said to them, ‘Did you receive the Holy Spirit
when you became believers?’ They replied, ‘No, we have not even heard that
there is a Holy Spirit.’ 3Then
he said, ‘Into what then were you baptized?’ They answered, ‘Into John’s
baptism.’ 4Paul
said, ‘John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to
believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.’ 5On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of
the Lord Jesus. 6When
Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke
in tongues and prophesied—7altogether there were about twelve of them.
Revelation
12:1-17
A great portent appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with
the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. 2She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pangs,
in the agony of giving birth. 3Then
another portent appeared in heaven: a great red dragon, with seven heads and
ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. 4His
tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth.
Then the dragon stood before the woman who was about to bear a child, so that
he might devour her child as soon as it was born.5And she gave birth to a son, a male child, who is
to rule all the nations with a rod of iron. But her
child was snatched away and taken to God and to his throne; 6and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she
has a place prepared by God, so that there she can be nourished for one
thousand two hundred and sixty days.
7 And
war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The
dragon and his angels fought back, 8but
they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. 9The great dragon was
thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the
deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels
were thrown down with him.
10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven,
proclaiming,
‘Now have come the salvation and the power
and the kingdom of our God
and the authority of his Messiah,
for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down,
who accuses them day and night before our God.
11 But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb
and by the word of their testimony,
for they did not cling to life even in the face of death.
12 Rejoice then, you heavens
and those who dwell in them!
But woe to the earth and the sea,
for the devil has come down to you
with great wrath,
because he knows that his time is short!’
13 So
when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the
male child. 14But the
woman was given the two wings of the great eagle, so that she could fly from
the serpent into the wilderness, to her place where she is nourished for a
time, and times, and half a time. 15Then
from his mouth the serpent poured water like a river after the woman, to sweep
her away with the flood. 16But
the earth came to the help of the woman; it opened its mouth and swallowed the
river that the dragon had poured from his mouth. 17Then the dragon was angry
with the woman, and went off to make war on the rest of her children, those who
keep the commandments of God and hold the testimony of Jesus.
Ephesians
6:10-20
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the
strength of his power. 11Put on the whole armour of God, so
that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For
our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the
rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present
darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13Therefore
take up the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that
evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14Stand
therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the
breastplate of righteousness. 15As shoes for your feet put on
whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. 16With
all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to
quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the
helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 Pray
in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep
alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints.19Pray
also for me, so that when I speak, a message may be given to me to make known
with boldness the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an
ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it boldly, as I must speak.

Conclusion
When
we receive the blessing of peace from our Father, it drives out fear and
strengthens us to be faithful to our calling.
Closing
Prayer (Collect for the Baptism of the Lord)
Eternal
Father, who at the baptism of Jesus revealed him to be your Son, anointing him
with the Holy Spirit, keep your children, born of water and the Spirit, faithful
to their calling; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
