Hymn: Immortal,
Invisible, God Only Wise
Theme: The Body of
Christ
Topic: The Mystery of Christ
Reading: Ephesians 3:1-12
This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ
Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles— 2for surely you have already heard of the commission of God’s
grace that was given to me for you, 3and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I
wrote above in a few words, 4a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding
of the mystery of Christ. 5In former generations this mystery was not made known to
humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the
Spirit: 6that is, the Gentiles have become fellow-heirs, members of the
same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 7 Of this gospel I
have become a servant according to the gift of God’s grace that was given to me
by the working of his power. 8Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was
given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of
Christ, 9and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery
hidden for ages in God who created all things; 10so that through the
church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the
rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11This was in accordance
with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12in whom we have access
to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him.
Introduction
Some of
the approaches to investigating the mystery of Christ include His nature (man
and God), His mission, and His role in our lives now and when He returns. In this study, we will focus on His mission
and role in our lives. Beginning of January
is a time of self-assessment and development of goals for the New Year. As Christians, we should also use this time
to evaluate our commitment to the Lord, and prayerfully seek God’s guidance for
our lives through the leading of the Holy Spirit. The Scripture makes it clear that the
thoughts God has for us are of good and not evil, to bring us to an expected
end. The Lord’s gift of Jesus Christ has
been a mystery for many generations but has been revealed by the Holy
Spirit. This mystery is that through the
gospel everyone has become members of the body of Christ and sharers in the
promise in Christ Jesus; but how?
Questions/Discussion
1. What does it mean
to be a member of the body of Christ? How
is it a mystery?
Romans 8:1-17
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in
Christ Jesus. 2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set
you free from the law of sin and of death. 3For God has done what
the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by sending his own Son in the
likeness of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin, he condemned sin in the
flesh, 4so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in
us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5For those who live
according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those
who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the
Spirit. 6To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on
the Spirit is life and peace. 7For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to
God; it does not submit to God’s law—indeed it cannot,8and those who are in
the flesh cannot please God. 9 But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since
the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ
does not belong to him. 10But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin,
the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11If the Spirit of him
who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christfrom the dead
will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells
in you. 12 So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to
the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13for if you live
according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the
deeds of the body, you will live. 14For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15For you did not
receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a
spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ 16it is that very Spirit
bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God,17and if children, then
heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him
so that we may also be glorified with him.
Galatians 3:26-29,
4:1-7
for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. 27As many of you as were
baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.28There is no longer Jew
or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female;
for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. 29And if you belong to
Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise.
4:1-7 My point is this: heirs, as long as they are minors, are no
better than slaves, though they are the owners of all the property; 2but they remain under
guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. 3So with us; while we
were minors, we were enslaved to the elemental spiritsof the world. 4But when the fullness
of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5in order to redeem
those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. 6And because you are
children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into ourhearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ 7So you are no longer a
slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.
Colossians 2:6-15
As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue
to live your lives in him, 7rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as
you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. 8 See to it that
no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to
human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and
not according to Christ. 9For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10and you have come to
fullness in him, who is the head of every ruler and authority. 11In him also you were
circumcised with a spiritual circumcision, by putting off the body of the
flesh in the circumcision of Christ; 12when you were buried with him in baptism, you were also raised
with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. 13And when you were dead
in trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive
together with him, when he forgave us all our trespasses, 14erasing the record
that stood against us with its legal demands. He set this aside, nailing it to
the cross. 15He disarmed the rulers and authorities and made a public
example of them, triumphing over them in it.
2. What are the
lessons for us in Matthew 2:1-12 regarding the mystery of Christ?
Matthew 2:1-12
In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of
Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2asking, ‘Where is the
child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its
rising, and have come to pay him homage.’ 3When King Herod heard
this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4and calling together
all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the
Messiah was to be born. 5They told him, ‘In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been
written by the prophet:
6 “And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who is to shepherd my people Israel.” ’
6 “And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who is to shepherd my people Israel.” ’
7 Then Herod
secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when
the star had appeared. 8Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, ‘Go and search
diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I
may also go and pay him homage.’ 9When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of
them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped
over the place where the child was. 10When they saw that the star had stopped, they were
overwhelmed with joy. 11On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother;
and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure-chests,
they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12And having been warned
in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another
road.
Psalm 72:1-7, 10-14
Refrain:
All nations shall serve him.
Give
the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to the king's son; That he
may rule your people righteously and the poor with justice; That the mountains
may bring prosperity to the people, and the little hills bring righteousness. R
He shall defend the needy among the
people; he shall rescue the poor and crush the oppressor. He shall live as long
as the sun and moon endure, from one generation to another. He shall come down
like rain upon the mown field, like showers that water the earth. In his time
shall the righteous flourish; there shall be abundance of peace till the moon
shall be no more. R The
kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall pay tribute, and the kings of Arabia
and Saba offer gifts. All kings shall bow down before him, and all the nations
do him service. For he shall deliver the poor who cries out in distress, and
the oppressed who has no helper. R He
shall have pity on the lowly and poor; he shall preserve the lives of the
needy. He shall redeem their lives from oppression and violence, and dear shall
their blood be in his sight. R
Isaiah 60:1-6
Arise, shine; for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
2 For darkness shall cover the earth,
and thick darkness the peoples;
but the Lord will arise upon you,
and his glory will appear over you.
3 Nations shall come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your dawn.
and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
2 For darkness shall cover the earth,
and thick darkness the peoples;
but the Lord will arise upon you,
and his glory will appear over you.
3 Nations shall come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your dawn.
4 Lift up your
eyes and look around;
they all gather together, they come to you;
your sons shall come from far away,
and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses’ arms.
5 Then you shall see and be radiant;
your heart shall thrill and rejoice,
because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you,
the wealth of the nations shall come to you.
6 A multitude of camels shall cover you,
the young camels of Midian and Ephah;
all those from Sheba shall come.
They shall bring gold and frankincense,
and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord.
they all gather together, they come to you;
your sons shall come from far away,
and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses’ arms.
5 Then you shall see and be radiant;
your heart shall thrill and rejoice,
because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you,
the wealth of the nations shall come to you.
6 A multitude of camels shall cover you,
the young camels of Midian and Ephah;
all those from Sheba shall come.
They shall bring gold and frankincense,
and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord.
3. Discuss some of our
responsibilities as members of the body of Christ.
Hebrews 13:1-20
Let mutual love
continue. 2Do not neglect to
show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels
without knowing it. 3Remember those who
are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being
tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. 4Let marriage be held in honour by all,
and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and
adulterers. 5Keep your lives free
from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, ‘I
will never leave you or forsake you.’ 6So we can say with
confidence,
‘The Lord is my helper;
I will not be afraid.
What can anyone do to me?’
‘The Lord is my helper;
I will not be afraid.
What can anyone do to me?’
7 Remember your
leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their
way of life, and imitate their faith. 8Jesus Christ is the
same yesterday and today and for ever. 9Do not be carried
away by all kinds of strange teachings; for it is well for the heart to be
strengthened by grace, not by regulations about food, which have not benefited those who
observe them. 10We have an altar from
which those who officiate in the tent have
no right to eat. 11For the bodies of
those animals whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest as a
sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. 12Therefore Jesus also suffered outside
the city gate in order to sanctify the people by his own blood. 13Let us then go to him outside the camp
and bear the abuse he endured. 14For here we have no
lasting city, but we are looking for the city that is to come. 15Through him, then, let us continually
offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his
name.16Do not neglect to do
good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. 17 Obey your
leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls and will
give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with sighing—for that would
be harmful to you. 18 Pray for us; we are sure that we have a clear conscience,
desiring to act honourably in all things. 19I urge you all the
more to do this, so that I may be restored to you very soon. 20 Now may the God
of peace, who brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of
the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant,
1 Peter 2:1-12
Rid yourselves,
therefore, of all malice, and all guile, insincerity, envy, and all slander. 2Like newborn infants, long for the pure,
spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— 3if indeed you have tasted that the Lord
is good.
4 Come to him, a
living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s
sight, and 5like living stones,
let yourselves be built into a
spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6For it stands in
scripture:
‘See, I am laying in Zion a stone,
a cornerstone chosen and precious;
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’
7To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe,
‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the very head of the corner’,
8and
‘A stone that makes them stumble,
and a rock that makes them fall.’
They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
‘See, I am laying in Zion a stone,
a cornerstone chosen and precious;
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’
7To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe,
‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the very head of the corner’,
8and
‘A stone that makes them stumble,
and a rock that makes them fall.’
They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
9 But you are a
chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the
mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
10 Once you were not a people,
but now you are God’s people;
once you had not received mercy,
but now you have received mercy.
10 Once you were not a people,
but now you are God’s people;
once you had not received mercy,
but now you have received mercy.
11 Beloved, I urge
you as aliens and exiles to abstain from the desires of the flesh that wage war
against the soul. 12Conduct yourselves
honourably among the Gentiles, so that, though they malign you as evildoers,
they may see your honourable deeds and glorify God when he comes to judge.
1 John 3:11-24
For this is the message you have heard from the beginning, that
we should love one another. 12We must not be like Cain who was from the evil one and murdered
his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his
brother’s righteous. 13Do not be astonished, brothers and sisters, that the world
hates you. 14We know that we have passed from death to life because we love
one another. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15All who hate a brother
or sisterare murderers, and you know that murderers do not have eternal life
abiding in them. 16We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and we
ought to lay down our lives for one another. 17How does God’s love
abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in
need and yet refuses help? 18 Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but
in truth and action. 19And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will
reassure our hearts before him 20whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our
hearts, and he knows everything. 21Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have boldness
before God; 22and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his
commandments and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the
name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.24All who obey his commandments
abide in him, and he abides in them. And by this we know that he abides in us,
by the Spirit that he has given us.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
This
mystery of Christ is that through the gospel everyone has become members of the
body of Christ and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus.
Closing Prayer (Collect for the Epiphany of Our Lord)
Eternal God, who by a star led wise
men to the worship of your Son. Guide by your light the nations of the earth, that
the whole world may know your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives
and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
