Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: Now thank we all our God
Theme: The Risen Lord
Topic:
Lord of All
Reading: Acts 11:1-18
Now the
apostles and the believers who were in Judea heard that the
Gentiles had also accepted the word of God. 2So when
Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized
him, 3saying,
‘Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?’ 4Then Peter began to explain it to them, step by
step, saying, 5‘I was in
the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. There was something
like a large sheet coming down from heaven, being lowered by its four corners;
and it came close to me. 6As I
looked at it closely I saw four-footed animals, beasts of prey, reptiles, and
birds of the air. 7I also
heard a voice saying to me, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat.” 8But I replied, “By no means, Lord; for nothing
profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.” 9But a second time the voice answered from heaven,
“What God has made clean, you must not call profane.” 10This happened three times; then everything was
pulled up again to heaven. 11At that
very moment three men, sent to me from Caesarea, arrived at the house where we
were.12The
Spirit told me to go with them and not to make a distinction between them and
us. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we
entered the man’s house. 13He told
us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, “Send to Joppa
and bring Simon, who is called Peter; 14he will
give you a message by which you and your entire household will be saved.” 15And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon
them just as it had upon us at the beginning. 16And I
remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, “John baptized with water,
but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” 17If then God gave them the same gift that he gave
us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder
God?’ 18When they
heard this, they were silenced. And they praised God, saying, ‘Then God has
given even to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life.’
Introduction
As strange as this may appear,
the risen Lord, our Saviour Jesus Christ, is Lord of all. From earth’s creation to redemption, God’s
plan is and has always been to be in relationship with everyone. Due to the fall of Adam and Eve, humanity
lost this unique relationship; but through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the
fellowship we once had with God was fully restored. According to Scripture, none has any excuse
for not being in relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. No wonder Christ declared that He stands at
the door of our hearts knocking, and as many as receive Him, He will dwell
with. God is keen on saving everyone and anyone; we should accept His great
love for us with thanksgiving, and love one another as we love ourselves. Whether we believe in Jesus Christ or not, He
is and will always be Lord of all.
Questions/Discussion
1)
How is Jesus Christ the Lord of all?
Psalm
148:1-14
Refrain: Alleluia!
Hallelujah!
Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights. Praise him, all
you angels of his; praise him, all his host. Praise him, sun and moon; praise
him, all you shining stars. R Praise him, heaven of heavens, and you
waters above the heavens. Let them praise the Name of the Lord; for he
commanded, and they were created. He made them stand fast for ever and ever; he
gave them a law which shall not pass away. R Praise the Lord from the earth, you
sea-monsters and all deeps; Fire and hail, snow and fog, tempestuous wind,
doing his will; Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars; Wild
beasts and all cattle, creeping things and winged birds; R Kings
of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the world; Young men
and maidens, old and young together. Let them praise the Name of the Lord, for
his Name only is exalted, his splendour is over earth and heaven. R He has
raised up strength for his people and praise for all his loyal servants, the
children of Israel, a people who are near him. R
Colossians 1:15-23
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all
creation; 16for in him all
things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible,
whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created
through him and for him. 17He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold
together. 18He is the head of the
body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he
might come to have first place in everything. 19For in him all the
fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all
things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his
cross. 21 And you who were
once estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22he has now reconciled in
his fleshly body through death, so as to present you holy and blameless
and irreproachable before him—23provided that you continue securely established and steadfast in
the faith, without shifting from the hope promised by the gospel that you
heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven. I, Paul,
became a servant of this gospel.
Revelation 21:1-6
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven
and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2And I saw the holy
city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a
bride adorned for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,
‘See, the home of God is among mortals.
He will dwell with them;
they will be his peoples,
and God himself will be with them;
4 he will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more;
mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away.’
‘See, the home of God is among mortals.
He will dwell with them;
they will be his peoples,
and God himself will be with them;
4 he will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more;
mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away.’
5 And the one who
was seated on the throne said, ‘See, I am making all things new.’ Also he said,
‘Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ 6Then he said to me,
‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the
thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life.
2) What are the lessons for us
in John 13:31-35 regarding the Lordship of Jesus Christ?
John 13:31-35
When he had
gone out, Jesus said, ‘Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been
glorified in him. 32If God
has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself
and will glorify him at once.33Little children, I am with you only a little
longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you,
“Where I am going, you cannot come.” 34I give
you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you
also should love one another. 35By this
everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.’
3) What does it mean to be in
relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ?
John 15:1-17
‘I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine-grower. 2He removes every
branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to
make it bear more fruit. 3You have already been cleansed by the word that I have
spoken to you. 4Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear
fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide
in me. 5I am the vine, you are
the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because
apart from me you can do nothing. 6Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and
withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7If you abide in me,
and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for
you. 8My Father is glorified
by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. 9As the Father has
loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10If you keep my
commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s
commandments and abide in his love. 11I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you,
and that your joy may be complete.
12 ‘This is my
commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13No one has greater
love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14You are my friends if
you do what I command you. 15I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does
not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I
have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16You did not choose me
but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will
last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17I am giving you these
commands so that you may love one another.
Colossians 2:6-15
As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue
to live your lives in him, 7rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as
you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. 8 See to it that
no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to
human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and
not according to Christ. 9For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10and you have come to
fullness in him, who is the head of every ruler and authority. 11In him also you were
circumcised with a spiritual circumcision, by putting off the body of the
flesh in the circumcision of Christ; 12when you were buried with him in baptism, you were also raised
with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. 13And when you were dead
in trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive
together with him, when he forgave us all our trespasses, 14erasing the record
that stood against us with its legal demands. He set this aside, nailing it to
the cross. 15He disarmed the
rulers and authorities and made a public example of them, triumphing over them
in it.
Colossians 3:1-17
So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are
above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on
things that are above, not on things that are on earth, 3for you have died, and
your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ who is
your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.
5 Put to death,
therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil
desire, and greed (which is idolatry). 6On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are
disobedient. 7These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living
that life. 8But now you must get
rid of all such things—anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language
from your mouth. 9Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the
old self with its practices 10and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being
renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. 11In that renewal there
is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian,
slave and free; but Christ is all and in all!
12 As God’s chosen
ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility,
meekness, and patience. 13Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against
another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you
also must forgive.14Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything
together in perfect harmony. 15And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed
you were called in the one body. And be thankful. 16Let the word of Christ dwell
in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude
in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. 17And whatever you do,
in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to
God the Father through him.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
God is keen on saving
everyone and anyone; we should accept His great love for us with thanksgiving,
and love one another as we love ourselves.
Closing Prayer (Collect
for Fifth Sunday of Easter)
Almighty God, your Son Jesus Christ is the
way, the truth, and the life. Give us grace to love one another and walk in the
way of his commandments, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one
God, now and for ever. Amen.
