Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: Abide With Me
Theme: The Risen Lord
Topic:
Eternal Life
Reading: Acts 9:36-43
Now in Joppa there was a
disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She
was devoted to good works and acts of charity. 37At that time she became ill and died. When they
had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. 38Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who
heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, ‘Please come
to us without delay.’ 39So Peter
got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room
upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other
clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. 40Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt
down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, ‘Tabitha, get up.’ Then she
opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. 41He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then
calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive. 42This became known throughout Joppa, and many
believed in the Lord. 43Meanwhile
he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner.
Introduction
Resurrection of our Lord
and Saviour Jesus Christ signalled the defeat of death. Hence the scripture: Where, O death, is your
victory? Where, O death, is your sting? Prior to the death and resurrection of Jesus,
mankind lived in the fear of death, and some still do, but that should not be the
case any more, especially for Christians.
Before Christ went to the cross of Calvary, He declared that He is going
back to His Father to prepare a place for us; that at the end of our earthly
lives we will live and reign with Him forever and ever. As believers, this is important to remember
for several reasons including that our faith in Jesus is not in vain, and that
we will receive just reward for our labour of love, to name a few. God’s promise of eternal life is true, and we
should always remember that we are citizens of Heaven.
Questions/Discussion
1) What is your understanding of
eternal life?
1 Corinthians 15:12-34
Now
if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there
is no resurrection of the dead? 13If there is no resurrection
of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; 14and if Christ
has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has
been in vain. 15We are even found to be misrepresenting God,
because we testified of God that he raised Christ—whom he did not raise if it
is true that the dead are not raised. 16For if the dead are not
raised, then Christ has not been raised. 17If Christ has not
been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18Then
those also who have died in Christ have perished. 19If for
this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
20 But
in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who
have died. 21For since death came through a human being, the
resurrection of the dead has also come through a human being; 22for
as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ. 23But
each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who
belong to Christ. 24Then comes the end, when he hands over
the kingdom to God the Father, after he has destroyed every ruler and every
authority and power. 25For he must reign until he has put all
his enemies under his feet.26The last enemy to be destroyed is
death. 27For ‘God has put all things in subjection under
his feet.’ But when it says, ‘All things are put in subjection’, it is plain
that this does not include the one who put all things in subjection under him. 28When
all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to
the one who put all things in subjection under him, so that God may be all in
all.
29 Otherwise,
what will those people do who receive baptism on behalf of the dead? If the
dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf?
30 And
why are we putting ourselves in danger every hour? 31I die
every day! That is as certain, brothers and sisters, as my boasting of
you—a boast that I make in Christ Jesus our Lord. 32If with
merely human hopes I fought with wild animals at Ephesus, what would I have
gained by it? If the dead are not raised,
‘Let us eat and drink,
for tomorrow we die.’
33Do not be deceived:
‘Bad company ruins good morals.’
34Come to a sober and right mind, and sin no more; for some people have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.
‘Let us eat and drink,
for tomorrow we die.’
33Do not be deceived:
‘Bad company ruins good morals.’
34Come to a sober and right mind, and sin no more; for some people have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.
Revelation 7:9-17
After
this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from
every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the
throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. 10They
cried out in a loud voice, saying,
‘Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!’
11And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, 12singing,
‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom
and thanksgiving and honour
and power and might
be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.’
Amen.’
13 Then
one of the elders addressed me, saying, ‘Who are these, robed in white, and
where have they come from?’ 14I said to him, ‘Sir, you are the
one that knows.’ Then he said to me, ‘These are they who have come out of the
great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of
the Lamb.
15 For this reason they are before the throne of God,
and worship him day and night within his temple,
and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them.
16 They will hunger no more, and thirst no more;
the sun will not strike them,
nor any scorching heat;
17 for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd,
and he will guide them to springs of the water of life,
and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’
15 For this reason they are before the throne of God,
and worship him day and night within his temple,
and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them.

nor any scorching heat;

and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’
2) What are the lessons for us in
John 10:22-30 regarding eternal life?
John 10:22-30
At that time the festival of
the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, 23and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the
portico of Solomon. 24So the
Jews gathered around him and said to him, ‘How long will you keep us in
suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.’25Jesus
answered, ‘I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my
Father’s name testify to me; 26but you
do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. 27My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they
follow me. 28I give
them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of
my hand. 29What my
Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of
the Father’s hand. 30The Father and I are one.’
3) How are we citizens of
Heaven?
Psalm 23:1-6
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not
want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
3 he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
3 he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even
though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff—
they comfort me.
I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff—
they comfort me.
5 You
prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
my whole life long.
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
my whole life long.
1 Corinthians 15:35-58
But
someone will ask, ‘How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they
come?’ 36Fool! What you sow does not come to life unless it
dies. 37And as for what you sow, you do not sow the body that
is to be, but a bare seed, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. 38But
God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body.39Not
all flesh is alike, but there is one flesh for human beings, another for
animals, another for birds, and another for fish. 40There are
both heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is one
thing, and that of the earthly is another. 41There is one glory
of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars;
indeed, star differs from star in glory.
42 So
it is with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable, what is
raised is imperishable. 43It is sown in dishonour, it is raised
in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. 44It
is sown a physical body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a physical
body, there is also a spiritual body. 45Thus it is written,
‘The first man, Adam, became a living being’; the last Adam became a
life-giving spirit. 46But it is not the spiritual that is
first, but the physical, and then the spiritual. 47The first
man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven.48As
was the man of dust, so are those who are of the dust; and as is the man of
heaven, so are those who are of heaven. 49Just as we have borne
the image of the man of dust, we will also bear the image of the man of
heaven.
50 What
I am saying, brothers and sisters, is this: flesh and blood cannot inherit
the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51Listen,
I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all be
changed, 52in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last
trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable,
and we will be changed. 53For this perishable body must put on
imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality.54When
this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on
immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled:
‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.’
55 ‘Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?’
56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.’
55 ‘Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?’
56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58 Therefore,
my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the
Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labour is not in vain.
Philippians 3:17-21
Brothers and sisters, join
in imitating me, and observe those who live according to the example you have
in us. 18For many
live as enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often told you of them, and now
I tell you even with tears. 19Their end
is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame;
their minds are set on earthly things. 20But our
citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are
expecting a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. 21He will
transform the body of our humiliation so that it may be conformed to the
body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to
make all things subject to himself.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
God’s promise of eternal life
is true, and we should always remember that we are citizens of Heaven.
Closing Prayer (Collect
for Fourth Sunday of Easter)
O God of peace, who brought again from the
dead our Lord Jesus Christ, that great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of
the eternal covenant, make us perfect in every good work to do your will, and
work in us that which is well-pleasing in your sight; through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.
