Hymn: My Hope is Built on
Nothing Less
Theme: The Risen Lord
Topic:
Believe!
Reading: Acts 5:27-32
When they had
brought them, they had them stand before the council. The high priest
questioned them, 28saying, ‘We
gave you strict orders not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with
your teaching and you are determined to bring this man’s blood on us.’ 29But Peter and
the apostles answered, ‘We must obey God rather than any human authority. 30The God of
our ancestors raised up Jesus, whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. 31God exalted
him at his right hand as Leader and Saviour, so that he might give repentance
to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32And we are
witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to
those who obey him.’
Introduction
A common name for
Christians is believers. This is because
we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ; that He came, died for the sins of the
world, rose from dead, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. Faith is at the core of our relationship with
God. The foregoing is more than
theology. This is because we could find
ourselves in doubt of our faith in Jesus Christ, especially in times of extreme
trials and temptations. The real
challenge is not whether we experience doubt once in a while, but what we do
when our faith is shaken to the core. At
such times, do we turn to our intellect, family, friends, and so on, or do we
turn to God through faith in Jesus Christ and with the help of the Holy Spirit? Remember that without faith, it is impossible
to please God.
Questions/Discussion
1)
Describe our Christian belief. What is the role of doubt in our journey of
faith?
The Nicene Creed
Let
us confess our faith, as we say,
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the
Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father.
With the Father and the Son
he is worshipped and glorified.
He has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic
and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism
for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Hebrews 11:1-6
Now faith is the assurance of
things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2Indeed, by faith our
ancestors received approval.3By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word
of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible. 4 By faith Abel offered to
God a more acceptable sacrifice
than Cain’s. Through this he received approval as righteous, God himself giving
approval to his gifts; he died, but through his faith he still speaks. 5By faith Enoch was taken so that he did not experience death;
and ‘he was not found, because God had taken him.’ For it was attested before
he was taken away that ‘he had pleased God.’ 6And without faith it is
impossible to please God, for whoever would approach him must believe that he
exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Revelation 1:4-8
John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and
peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven
spirits who are before his throne, 5and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of
the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and
freed us from our sins by his blood, 6and madeus to be a
kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion
for ever and ever. Amen.
7 Look! He is coming with the clouds;
every eye will see him,
even those who pierced him;
and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail.
So it is to be. Amen.
7 Look! He is coming with the clouds;
every eye will see him,
even those who pierced him;
and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail.
So it is to be. Amen.
8 ‘I am the Alpha
and the Omega’, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the
Almighty.
2) What are the lessons for us
in John 20:19-31 regarding doubt and belief?
John 20:19-31
When it was evening on that
day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples
had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and
said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 20After he said this, he showed
them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the
Lord. 21Jesus said to them again,
‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’22When he had said this, he
breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you
retain the sins of any, they are retained.’ 24 But Thomas (who was
called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he
said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my
finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.’ 26 A week later his
disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors
were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 27Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands.
Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’ 28Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ 29Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me?
Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’ 30 Now Jesus did many other
signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. 31But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through
believing you may have life in his name.
3) How do we build up our
faith in Jesus Christ?
Psalm 118:14-29
Refrain: On this day the Lord has acted; we will
rejoice and be glad.
The Lord is my strength and my song, and he
has become my salvation. There is a sound of exultation and victory in the
tents of the righteous: "The right hand of the Lord has triumphed! the
right hand of the Lord is exalted! the right hand of the Lord has
triumphed!" R I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of
the Lord. The Lord has punished me sorely, but he did not hand me over to
death. R Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter them; I
will offer thanks to the Lord. "This is the gate of the Lord; he who is
righteous may enter." R I will give thanks to you, for you answered
me and have become my salvation. The same stone which the builders rejected has
become the chief cornerstone. R This is the Lord's doing, and it is
marvellous in our eyes. On this day the Lord has acted; we will rejoice and be
glad in it. R Hosannah, Lord, hosannah! Lord, send us now success.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; we bless you from the house of
the Lord. God is the Lord; he has shined upon us; form a procession with
branches up to the horns of the altar. R "You are my God, and I
will thank you; you are my God, and I will exalt you." Give thanks to the
Lord, for he is good; his mercy endures for ever. R
Matthew 17:14-20
When they
came to the crowd, a man came to him, knelt before him,15and said,
‘Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; he
often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16And I brought
him to your disciples, but they could not cure him.’ 17Jesus
answered, ‘You faithless and perverse generation, how much longer must I be
with you? How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him here to me.’ 18And Jesus
rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was cured
instantly. 19Then the
disciples came to Jesus privately and said, ‘Why could we not cast it out?’ 20He said to
them, ‘Because of your little faith. For truly I tell you, if you have faith
the size of a mustard seed, you
will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there”, and it will move; and
nothing will be impossible for you.’
James 1:2-8
My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any
kind, consider it nothing but joy, 3because you know that the testing of your faith produces
endurance; 4and let endurance have
its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing. 5 If any of you is
lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and
it will be given you. 6But ask in faith, never doubting, for the one who doubts is like
a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind; 7, 8for the doubter, being
double-minded and unstable in every way, must not expect to receive anything
from the Lord.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
During moments of doubt, we
should turn to God through faith in Jesus Christ and with the help of the Holy
Spirit, because without faith, it is impossible to please God.
Closing Prayer (Collect
for Second Sunday of Easter)
Almighty and eternal God, the strength of
those who believe and the hope of those who doubt, may we, who have not seen,
have faith and receive the fullness of Christ's blessing, who is alive and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
