Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: Fight the good
fight with all thy might
Theme: Spirit Divine
Topic: God of Abundance
Reading: Joel 2:23-32
23 O children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in the Lord your
God;
for he has given the early rain for your vindication,
he has poured down for you abundant rain,
the early and the later rain, as before.
24 The threshing-floors shall be full of grain,
the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
for he has given the early rain for your vindication,
he has poured down for you abundant rain,
the early and the later rain, as before.
24 The threshing-floors shall be full of grain,
the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
25 I will repay you for the
years that the swarming locust has eaten,
the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent against you.
the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent against you.
26 You shall eat in plenty
and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your
God,
who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame.
27 You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel,
and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other.
And my people shall never again be put to shame.
who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame.
27 You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel,
and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other.
And my people shall never again be put to shame.
28 Then afterwards I
will pour out my spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.
29 Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour out my spirit.
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.
29 Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour out my spirit.
30 I will show portents in the heavens and on the earth,
blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31The sun shall be turned
to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.32Then everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and
in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors
shall be those whom the Lord calls.
Introduction
The ups
and downs in life sometimes make it appear as if we serve a God of ‘not
enough’, but on the contrary, our Lord is the God of abundance. It is not His will that we live in lack, for
according to Scripture God says that He will not withhold any good thing from
those whose walk is blameless. So what
happens when we go through a ‘dry season’?
Does it mean that God has forgotten His promise? Has He abandoned us? No, He has not, far from it! We live in a fallen world, and there are good
and bad seasons. God’s promise is not
that we will not face adversity, but that He will provide for us and see us
through it all; this is why He is called the Great Provider- Jehovah-jireh. In what areas are you facing lack today-
health, school, work, career, finances, relationship with God and other people,
and so on? Remember that God is always
present with us, in the good and the bad, and will make a way even where there
seems to be no way.
Questions/Discussion
1) How do we know that
our Lord is the God of abundance?
Genesis 22:6-14
Abraham took the wood of the burnt-offering and laid it on his
son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. So the two of them
walked on together. 7Isaac said to his father Abraham, ‘Father!’ And he said, ‘Here I
am, my son.’ He said, ‘The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb
for a burnt-offering?’ 8Abraham said, ‘God himself will provide the lamb for a
burnt-offering, my son.’ So the two of them walked on together. 9 When they came
to the place that God had shown him, Abraham built an altar there and laid the
wood in order. He bound his son Isaac, and laid him on the altar, on top of the
wood. 10Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his
son. 11But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, and
said, ‘Abraham, Abraham!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’ 12He said, ‘Do not lay
your hand on the boy or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God,
since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.’ 13And Abraham looked up
and saw a ram, caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram
and offered it up as a burnt-offering instead of his son. 14So Abraham called that
place ‘The Lord will
provide’; as it is said to this day, ‘On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.’
Deuteronomy 8:10-18
You shall eat your fill and bless the Lord your God for the good land
that he has given you. 11 Take care that you do not forget the Lord your God, by failing to keep
his commandments, his ordinances, and his statutes, which I am commanding you
today. 12When you have eaten your fill and have built fine houses and
live in them, 13and when your herds and flocks have multiplied, and your silver
and gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied, 14then do not exalt
yourself, forgetting the Lord your
God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery,15who led you through
the great and terrible wilderness, an arid waste-land with poisonous snakes
and scorpions. He made water flow for you from flint rock, 16and fed you in the
wilderness with manna that your ancestors did not know, to humble you and to
test you, and in the end to do you good. 17Do not say to
yourself, ‘My power and the might of my own hand have gained me this wealth.’ 18But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who
gives you power to get wealth, so that he may confirm his covenant that he
swore to your ancestors, as he is doing today.
Psalm 65:1-13
Refrain: You crown the
year with your goodness, O Lord.
You are
to be praised, O God, in Zion; to you shall vows be performed in Jerusalem. To
you that hear prayer shall all flesh come, because of their transgressions. R Our sins are
stronger than we are, but you will blot them out. Happy are they whom you choose
and draw to your courts to dwell there! they will be satisfied by the beauty of
your house, by the holiness of your temple. R Awesome things will you show us in your
righteousness, O God of our salvation, O Hope of all the ends of the earth and
of the seas that are far away. You make fast the mountains by your power; they
are girded about with might. R You still the roaring of the seas, the
roaring of their waves, and the clamour of the peoples. Those who dwell at the
ends of the earth will tremble at your marvellous signs; you make the dawn and
the dusk to sing for joy. R You
visit the earth and water it abundantly; you make it very plenteous; the river
of God is full of water. You prepare the grain, for so you provide for the
earth. R You drench the
furrows and smooth out the ridges; with heavy rain you soften the ground and
bless its increase. You crown the year with your goodness, and your paths
overflow with plenty. R May the
fields of the wilderness be rich for grazing, and the hills be clothed with joy.
May the meadows cover themselves with flocks, and the valleys cloak themselves
with grain; let them shout for joy and sing. R
2) What are the lessons for
us in Luke 18:9-14 regarding the God
of abundance?
What should be our attitude towards His
mercies?
Luke 18: 9-14
He also
told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous
and regarded others with contempt: 10‘Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and
the other a tax-collector. 11The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, “God, I
thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even
like this tax-collector. 12I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.” 13But the tax-collector, standing far off, would not
even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, “God, be
merciful to me, a sinner!” 14I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather
than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who
humble themselves will be exalted.’
3) What are some of the
challenges to trusting
that God always provides?
How do we overcome the challenges?
Deuteronomy 8:1-9
This
entire commandment that I command you today you must diligently observe, so
that you may live and increase, and go in and occupy the land that the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors.2Remember the long way that the Lord your God has led you these forty
years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, testing you to know what was
in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commandments.3He humbled you by letting you hunger, then by feeding you
with manna, with which neither you nor your ancestors were acquainted, in order
to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but by every word
that comes from the mouth of the Lord. 4The clothes on your back did not wear out and your
feet did not swell these forty years. 5Know then in your heart that as a parent disciplines a child
so the Lord your God disciplines you. 6Therefore keep the commandments of the Lordyour God, by walking in his ways and by fearing him. 7For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good
land, a land with flowing streams, with springs and underground waters welling
up in valleys and hills, 8a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and
pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, 9a land where you may eat bread without scarcity,
where you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills
you may mine copper.
Philippians 4:10-20
I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at last you have
revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned for me, but had no
opportunity to show it. 11Not that I am referring to being in need; for I have learned to
be content with whatever I have. 12I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have
plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being
well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. 13I can do all things
through him who strengthens me. 14In any case, it was kind of you to share my distress. 15 You Philippians
indeed know that in the early days of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no
church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you alone. 16For even when I was in
Thessalonica, you sent me help for my needs more than once. 17Not that I seek the
gift, but I seek the profit that accumulates to your account. 18I have been paid in
full and have more than enough; I am fully satisfied, now that I have received
from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice
acceptable and pleasing to God. 19And my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to
his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 20To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18
As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the
time of my departure has come. 7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have
kept the faith. 8From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness,
which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day, and not only
to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 16 At my first
defence no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted
against them! 17But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through
me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So
I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.18The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for
his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Conclusion
God is
always present with us, in the good and the bad, and will make a way even where
there seems to be no way.
Closing Prayer (Collect
for Twenty-third Sunday after Pentecost)
Lord God our redeemer, who heard the
cry of your people and sent your servant Moses to lead them out of slavery, free
us from the tyranny of sin and death, and by the leading of your Spirit bring
us to our promised land; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
