Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: Now thank we all
our God
Theme: Spirit Divine
Topic: New Life in Christ
Reading: Jeremiah 31:27-34
The days are surely
coming, says the Lord, when I will sow the house
of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of humans and the seed of
animals. 28And just as I have
watched over them to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy, and bring
evil, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the Lord. 29In those days they shall
no longer say:
‘The parents have eaten sour grapes,
and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’
30But all shall die for their own sins; the teeth of everyone who eats sour grapes shall be set on edge. 31 The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, ‘Know the Lord’, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

Introduction
When we become Christians, God
expects that our lives be guided by the exemplary life of Jesus Christ. To be a Christian is to be Christ-like, and
to be like Christ is a process characterized by ups and downs. This is why it is important that we stay
connected to God through fellowship with other Christians, studying His Word,
and praying regularly to name a few. It
is impossible to keep growing as a Christian in our strength; we need the help
and guidance of the Holy Spirit. As long
as we are alive, there will be challenges in our journey of faith, but as we
know the Lord more deeply through prayer and His word, and His great love for
us, we will always emerge victorious. To
have new life in Christ is to turn from selfish and sinful ways to life of
righteousness in Jesus Christ.
Questions/Discussion
1) What does new life in
Christ mean?
Romans 6:1-14
What then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that
grace may abound? 2By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? 3Do you not know that
all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his
death? 4Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so
that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we
too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his,
we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6We know that our old
self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we
might no longer be enslaved to sin. 7For whoever has died is freed from sin. 8But if we have died
with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9We know that Christ,
being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion
over him. 10The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he
lives, he lives to God. 11So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to
God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore, do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal
bodies, to make you obey their passions. 13No longer present your
members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God
as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to
God as instruments of righteousness. 14For sin will have no
dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
2 Corinthians 5:14-21
For the love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced
that one has died for all; therefore all have died. 15And he died for all,
so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who
died and was raised for them. 16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human
point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we
know him no longer in that way. 17So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything
old has passed away; see, everything has become new! 18All this is from God,
who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of
reconciliation; 19that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not
counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of
reconciliation to us. 20So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal
through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21For our sake he made him
to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of
God.
1 Peter 1:3-9, 13-23
Blessed be the God and
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth
into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and
unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5who are being protected
by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the
last time. 6In this you rejoice, even if now for a little while you
have had to suffer various trials, 7so that the genuineness
of your faith—being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested
by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honour when Jesus Christ
is revealed. 8Although you have not
seen him, you love him; and even
though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an
indescribable and glorious joy, 9for you are receiving the
outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 13 Therefore prepare
your minds for action; discipline
yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you
when he is revealed. 14Like obedient children,
do not be conformed to the desires that you formerly had in ignorance. 15Instead, as he who called you is holy, be
holy yourselves in all your conduct; 16for it is written, ‘You
shall be holy, for I am holy.’ 17 If you invoke as
Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, live
in reverent fear during the time of your exile. 18You know that you were ransomed from the
futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like
silver or gold, 19but with the precious
blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. 20He was destined before the foundation of the
world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake. 21Through him you have come to trust in God,
who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope
are set on God. 22 Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to
the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart. 23You have been born anew, not of perishable
but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God.
2) What are the lessons for
us in Luke 18:1-8 regarding having a
new life in Christ?
Luke 18:1-8
Then
Jesus told them a parable about their need
to pray always and not to lose heart. 2He said, ‘In a certain city there was a judge who neither
feared God nor had respect for people. 3In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and
saying, “Grant me justice against my opponent.” 4For a while he refused; but later he said to
himself, “Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, 5yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will
grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.” ’ 6And the Lord said, ‘Listen to what the unjust
judge says. 7And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to
him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them? 8I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them.
And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?’
3) Discuss some of the
challenges to having a new life in Christ. How do we overcome them?
Psalm 119:97-104
Refrain: The words of
the Lord are sweeter than honey.
Oh, how I
love your law! all the day long it is in my mind. Your commandment has made me
wiser than my enemies, and it is always with me. R I have more
understanding than all my teachers, for your decrees are my study. I am wiser
than the elders, because I observe your commandments. R I restrain my
feet from every evil way, that I may keep your word. I do not shrink from your
judgements, because you yourself have taught me. R How sweet are
your words to my taste! they are sweeter than honey to my mouth. Through your
commandments I gain understanding; therefore I hate every lying way. R
Romans 6:15-23
What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under
grace? By no means! 16Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as
obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which
leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17But thanks be to God
that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart
to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, 18and that you, having
been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. 19I am speaking in human
terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented
your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now
present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification. 20 When you were
slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21So what advantage did
you then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those
things is death. 22But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God,
the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life. 23For the wages of sin
is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
2 Timothy 3:14-17, 4:1-5
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly
believed, knowing from whom you learned it, 15and how from childhood
you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation
through faith in Christ Jesus. 16All scripture is inspired by God and isuseful for teaching, for
reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17so that everyone who
belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.
4:1-5 In the presence of God
and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of
his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: 2proclaim the message;
be persistent whether the time is favourable or unfavourable; convince, rebuke,
and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. 3For the time is coming
when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they
will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, 4and will turn away
from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. 5As for you, always be
sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry
fully.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
To have new life in Christ
is to turn from selfish and sinful ways to life of righteousness in Jesus
Christ.
Closing Prayer
(Collect for Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost)
Almighty and everliving God, increase
in us your gift of faith, that forsaking what lies behind and reaching out to
what is before, we may run the way of your commandments and win the crown of
everlasting joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
