Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: When upon life's
billows you are tempest tossed
Theme: Spirit Divine
Topic: Thankful heart
Reading: Deuteronomy
26:1-11
When
you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an
inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, 2you shall take some of the first of all the fruit
of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall
put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling
for his name. 3You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and
say to him, ‘Today I declare to the Lord your God that I have come into the
land that the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us.’ 4When the priest takes the basket from your hand
and sets it down before the altar of the Lord your God, 5you shall make this response before the Lord your God: ‘A wandering Aramean was my
ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number,
and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous.6When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by
imposing hard labour on us, 7we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors; the Lord heard our voice and saw our
affliction, our toil, and our oppression. 8The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty
hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with
signs and wonders; 9and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a
land flowing with milk and honey. 10So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you,
O Lord, have given me.’ You shall set it down before theLord your God and bow down before the Lord your God. 11Then you, together with the Levites and the aliens
who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the Lord your God has given to you and to your
house.
Introduction
Thankful
heart is an attribute we should display at all times. However, we know that circumstances in our
lives sometimes compel us to be unappreciative of good things God is doing in
our lives. To be thankful does not mean
that we have the ‘perfect life’, but that we are grateful for the blessings of
God in our lives. Although negative
situations- illness, unemployment, loss of a loved one, trouble at school/home/work/business,
and so on- tend to push us down, we should allow the Holy Spirit to lift our
hearts up in thanksgiving to the Lord at all times. This does not imply burying our head in the
sand, and neglecting our responsibilities, but rather is expression of complete
trust in the Lord our Maker.
Questions/Discussion
1) What does it mean to
be thankful to the Lord?
Why should we be thankful even in the face
of dire situations?
Psalm 100:1-5
1 Make a joyful
noise to the Lord, all the
earth.
2 Worship the Lord with gladness;
come into his presence with singing.
2 Worship the Lord with gladness;
come into his presence with singing.
3 Know that the Lord is God.
It is he that made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
It is he that made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates
with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise.
Give thanks to him, bless his name.
and his courts with praise.
Give thanks to him, bless his name.
5 For the Lord is good;
his steadfast love endures for ever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.
his steadfast love endures for ever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.
Psalm 103:1-18
1 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is
within me, bless his holy name.
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits—
3 who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
5 who satisfies you with good as long as you live
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

6 The Lord works vindication and
justice for all who are oppressed.
7 He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel.
8 The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 He will not always accuse, nor will he keep his anger for ever.
10 He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as the heavens are high above the earth,
so great is his steadfast love towards those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west, so far he removes our transgressions from us.
13 As a father has compassion for his children,
so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him.
14 For he knows how we were made; he remembers that we are dust.

15 As for mortals,
their days are like grass; they flourish like a flower of the field;
16 for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more.
17 But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him,
and his righteousness to children’s children,
18 to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments.
16 for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more.
17 But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him,
and his righteousness to children’s children,
18 to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments.
Acts 16:22-34
The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates had them
stripped of their clothing and ordered them to be beaten with rods.23After they had given
them a severe flogging, they threw them into prison and ordered the jailer to
keep them securely. 24Following these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell
and fastened their feet in the stocks. 25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing
hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. 26Suddenly there was an
earthquake, so violent that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and
immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened. 27When the jailer woke
up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill
himself, since he supposed that the prisoners had escaped. 28But Paul shouted in a
loud voice, ‘Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.’ 29The jailer called
for lights, and rushing in, he fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30Then he brought them
outside and said, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’31They answered,
‘Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.’ 32They spoke the word of
the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. 33At the same hour of
the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and his entire family
were baptized without delay. 34He brought them up into the house and set food before them; and
he and his entire household rejoiced that he had become a believer in God.
2) What are the lessons for
us in John 6:25-35 regarding having
thankful heart?
John 6:25-35
When they found him on the other side of the lake, they said to
him, ‘Rabbi, when did you come here?’ 26Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you are looking
for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27Do not work for the
food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the
Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his
seal.’ 28Then they said to him, ‘What must we do to perform the works of
God?’29Jesus answered them,
‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.’ 30So they said to him,
‘What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe
you? What work are you performing? 31Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written,
“He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” ’ 32Then Jesus said to
them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from
heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God
is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ 34They said to him,
‘Sir, give us this bread always.’ 35 Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes
to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
3) Discuss some of the
challenges to being
thankful.
How do we overcome them?
2 Samuel 6:12-23
It was told King David, ‘The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-edom and all
that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.’ So David went and brought up
the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the city of David with rejoicing; 13and when those who
bore the ark of the Lord had
gone six paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling. 14David danced before
the Lord with all his
might; David was girded with a linen ephod. 15So David and all the
house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with
shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet. 16 As the ark of
the Lord came into the
city of David, Michal daughter of Saul looked out of the window, and saw King
David leaping and dancing before the Lord;
and she despised him in her heart. 17 They brought in the ark of the Lord, and set it in its place, inside
the tent that David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt-offerings and
offerings of well-being before the Lord. 18When David had
finished offering the burnt-offerings and the offerings of well-being, he
blessed the people in the name of the Lord of
hosts, 19and distributed food among all the people, the whole multitude
of Israel, both men and women, to each a cake of bread, a portion of meat, and
a cake of raisins. Then all the people went back to their homes. 20 David returned
to bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David,
and said, ‘How the king of Israel honoured himself today, uncovering himself
today before the eyes of his servants’ maids, as any vulgar fellow might shamelessly
uncover himself!’ 21David said to Michal, ‘It was before the Lord, who chose me in place of your
father and all his household, to appoint me as prince over Israel, the people
of the Lord, that I have
danced before the Lord. 22I will make myself yet
more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in my own eyes; but by the
maids of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honour.’ 23And Michal the
daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.
Luke 17:11-19
On the
way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and
Galilee. 12As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their
distance, 13they called out, saying, ‘Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!’ 14When he saw them, he said to them, ‘Go and show
yourselves to the priests.’ And as they went, they were made clean.15Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned
back, praising God with a loud voice. 16He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a
Samaritan. 17Then Jesus asked, ‘Were not ten made clean? But the other
nine, where are they? 18Was none of them found to return and give praise to God
except this foreigner?’ 19Then he said to him, ‘Get up and go on your way; your faith
has made you well.’
Philippians 4:4-9
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5Let your gentleness be
known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and
supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7And the peace of God,
which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in
Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is
honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever
is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of
praise, think about these things. 9Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and
heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
Thankful
heart is expression of complete trust in the Lord our Maker.
Closing Prayer
(Collect for Harvest Thanksgiving Sunday)
Creator of the fruitful earth, you
made us stewards of all things. Give us grateful hearts for all your goodness, and
steadfast wills to use your bounty well, that the whole human family, today and
in generations to come, may with us give thanks for the riches of your
creation. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.
