Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: When we walk with the Lord
Theme: King of kings
Topic: Perfect in every good work
Reading: Acts 2:42-47
They devoted
themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread
and the prayers.43 Awe
came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the
apostles. 44All
who believed were together and had all things in common; 45they
would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46Day
by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at
home and ate their food with glad
and generous hearts, 47praising
God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to
their number those who were being saved.
Introduction
Our God is perfect and expects us
to be perfect, not in our strength, but through our faith in His Son Jesus
Christ and obedience to the Holy Spirit.
We are called to be perfect in every good work; and we can only fulfill
this mandate when we allow the Holy Spirit to control our thoughts, speech and
action. Being perfect in every good work
requires total and complete surrender to the move of the Holy Spirit, and
resolute desire to know and do the will of God at all times. This may be relatively easy sometimes and
difficult at other times, but if we resolve to serve Christ, He understands our
weaknesses and imperfections, and will always fill us with grace for each
day. Perfection in every good work is
not just about doing well, but doing the things we do because of our faith in
Jesus Christ.
Questions/Discussion
1) What does it mean to be perfect
before God?
Matthew 5:43-48
‘You
have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbour and hate your
enemy.” 44But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who
persecute you, 45so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he
makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous
and on the unrighteous. 46For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have?
Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? 47And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even
the Gentiles do the same? 48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Hebrews 12:1-17
Therefore, since we
are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every
weight and the sin that clings so closely, and
let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us,2looking
to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him
endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right
hand of the throne of God.
3 Consider him who endured such
hostility against himself from sinners,so that you may not grow weary or lose
heart. 4In
your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding
your blood. 5And
you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as children—
‘My child, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,
or lose heart when you are punished by him;
6 for the Lord disciplines those whom he loves,
and chastises every child whom he accepts.’
7Endure trials for the sake of discipline. God is treating you as children; for what child is there whom a parent does not discipline? 8If you do not have that discipline in which all children share, then you are illegitimate and not his children. 9Moreover, we had human parents to discipline us, and we respected them. Should we not be even more willing to be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share his holiness. 11Now, discipline always seems painful rather than pleasant at the time, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

12 Therefore lift your drooping
hands and strengthen your weak knees,13and
make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of
joint, but rather be healed.
14 Pursue
peace with everyone, and the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. 15See
to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no root of bitterness
springs up and causes trouble, and through it many become defiled. 16See
to it that no one becomes like Esau, an immoral and godless person, who sold
his birthright for a single meal.17You
know that later, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for
he found no chance to repent, even
though he sought the blessing with
tears.
1 Peter 1:13-25
Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set
all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is
revealed. 14Like obedient children, do
not be conformed to the desires that you formerly had in ignorance. 15Instead, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; 16for it is written, ‘You
shall be holy, for I am holy.’ 17 If you invoke as
Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, live
in reverent fear during the time of your exile. 18You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your
ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, 19but with the precious
blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. 20He was destined before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake. 21Through him you have come
to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your
faith and hope are set on God. 22 Now that you have
purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual
love, love one another deeply from the heart. 23You have been born anew,
not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through
the living and enduring word of God. 24For
‘All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, 25 but the word of the Lord endures for ever.’ That word is the good news that was announced to you.

2) What are the lessons for us in John
10:1-10 regarding being perfect in every good work?
John 10:1-10
‘Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the
sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. 2The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the
sheep. 3The gatekeeper opens the
gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and
leads them out. 4When he has brought out
all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know
his voice. 5They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not
know the voice of strangers.’ 6Jesus used this figure of
speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. 7 So again Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you,
I am the gate for the sheep. 8All who came before me are
thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. 9I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will
come in and go out and find pasture. 10The thief comes only to
steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have
life, and have it abundantly.
3) What are some of the challenges
to being perfect in every good work? How
do we overcome them?
Psalm 23:1-6 (KJV)
1The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Acts 17:24-31
The
God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and
earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, 25nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed
anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things. 26From one ancestor he
made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their
existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live, 27so that they would search for God and perhaps grope for him and find him—though
indeed he is not far from each one of us. 28For “In him we live and move and have our being”; as even
some of your own poets have said,
“For we too are his offspring.”
29Since we are God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of mortals. 30While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31because he has fixed a day on which he will have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.’

1 Peter 2:19-25
For
it is to your credit if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering
unjustly. 20If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, where is
the credit in that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you
have God’s approval. 21For to this you have been called, because Christ also
suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps.
22 ‘He committed no sin,
and no deceit was found in his mouth.’
23When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly.24He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. 25For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

Conclusion
Perfection in every good work is

Jesus Christ.
Closing Prayer (Collect for Fourth Sunday of Easter)
O God of peace, who brought again
from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, that great shepherd of the sheep, by the
blood of the eternal covenant, make us perfect in every good work to do your
will, and work in us that which is well-pleasing in your sight; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.
