Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: Praise to the Lord, the Almighty the King of Creation
Theme: The Day is Near
Topic: Put on the Lord Jesus Christ
Reading: Romans 13:11-14
Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the
moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when
we became believers; 12the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us
then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light; 13let us live honourably as in the day, not in revelling and
drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy.14Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no
provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
Introduction
In the next few
weeks, our studies will focus on the return of Jesus Christ to earth, also
referred to as parousia or advent. This
theme, which originated from Christ Himself, has being given several
interpretations within and outside Christendom.
The argument has different angles to it, but the most prominent has been
whether this promise should be taken literary or not. There are certain lessons in the Scripture
that were given as figures of speech. However,
similar to the virgin birth of Christ, His death, resurrection and ascension,
and the salvation the Son of God brought to all mankind, the second coming of
Lord Jesus Christ cannot be easily comprehended by our human minds. No wonder Christ said that God the Father
will send His Holy Spirit to all mankind, to teach us all things. In the present study, we will discuss the day
of the Lord and how we ought to put on the Lord Jesus Christ as we await His
coming.
Questions/Discussion
1. What is your understanding of the return of Christ?
Matthew 24:3-35
When
he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately,
saying, ‘Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign of your coming
and of the end of the age?’ 4Jesus
answered them, ‘Beware that no one leads you astray. 5For
many will come in my name, saying, “I am the Messiah!” and they will lead many astray. 6And
you will hear of wars and rumours of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for
this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7For
nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be
faminesand earthquakes in various places: 8all
this is but the beginning of the birth pangs. 9 ‘Then
they will hand you over to be tortured and will put you to death, and you will
be hated by all nations because of my name. 10Then
many will fall away, and they
will betray one another and hate one another.11And
many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12And
because of the increase of lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold.13But
anyone who endures to the end will be saved. 14And
this good news of the kingdom
will be proclaimed throughout the world, as a testimony to all the nations; and
then the end will come. 15 ‘So
when you see the desolating sacrilege standing in the holy place, as was spoken
of by the prophet Daniel (let the reader understand),16then
those in Judea must flee to the mountains; 17someone
on the housetop must not go down to take what is in the house; 18someone
in the field must not turn back to get a coat. 19Woe
to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days! 20Pray
that your flight may not be in winter or on a sabbath. 21For
at that time there will be great suffering, such as has not been from the
beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. 22And
if those days had not been cut short, no one would be saved; but for the sake
of the elect those days will be cut short. 23Then
if anyone says to you, “Look! Here is the Messiah!” or “There he is!”—do not believe it. 24For
false messiahs and false prophets
will appear and produce great signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible,
even the elect. 25Take
note, I have told you beforehand. 26So,
if they say to you, “Look! He is in the wilderness”, do not go out. If they
say, “Look! He is in the inner rooms”, do not believe it. 27For
as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be
the coming of the Son of Man.28Wherever
the corpse is, there the vultures will gather. 29 ‘Immediately
after the suffering of those days the sun will be darkened, and
the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the
powers of heaven will be shaken. 30Then
the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of
the earth will mourn, and they will see “the Son of Man coming on the clouds of
heaven” with power and great glory. 31And
he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his
elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. 32 ‘From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon
as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is
near. 33So
also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 34Truly
I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have
taken place. 35Heaven
and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
1 Corinthians 15:12-26
Now
if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there
is no resurrection of the dead? 13If
there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; 14and
if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your
faith has been in vain. 15We
are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he
raised Christ—whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16For
if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. 17If
Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your
sins. 18Then
those also who have died in
Christ have perished. 19If
for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be
pitied. 20 But in fact Christ has
been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. 21For
since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead has also
come through a human being;22for as all die in Adam, so all
will be made alive in Christ. 23But
each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong
to Christ. 24Then
comes the end, when he hands over
the kingdom to God the Father, after he has destroyed every ruler and every
authority and power. 25For
he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26The
last enemy to be destroyed is death.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so
that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so,
through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died. 15For this we declare to you by the word of the
Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by
no means precede those who have died. 16For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s
call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the
dead in Christ will rise first.17Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the
clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with
the Lord for ever. 18Therefore encourage one another with these words.
2. What are the lessons for us in Matthew 24:36-44 regarding the
Lord’s second coming?
Matthew 24:36-44
‘But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels
of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the
Son of Man. 38For as in those days before the flood they were
eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah
entered the ark, 39and they knew nothing until the flood came and
swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will
be left. 41Two women will be grinding meal together; one will
be taken and one will be left. 42Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what
day your Lord is coming. 43But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in
what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and
would not have let his house be broken into. 44Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of
Man is coming at an unexpected hour.
2 Peter 3:3-18
First
of all you must understand this, that in the last days scoffers will come,
scoffing and indulging their own lusts 4and
saying, ‘Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since our ancestors died, all things continue as they were from
the beginning of creation!’ 5They
deliberately ignore this fact, that by the word of God heavens existed long ago
and an earth was formed out of water and by means of water,6through
which the world of that time was deluged with water and perished. 7But
by the same word the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire,
being kept until the day of judgement and destruction of the godless. 8 But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that
with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like
one day. 9The
Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient
with you, not wanting any to
perish, but all to come to repentance.10But
the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away
with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth
and everything that is done on it will be disclosed. 11 Since
all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of people ought you
to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness,12waiting
for and hastening the coming of
the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved,
and the elements will melt with fire? 13But,
in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where
righteousness is at home. 14 Therefore,
beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at
peace, without spot or blemish; 15and
regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul
wrote to you according to the wisdom given to him, 16speaking
of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to
understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as
they do the other scriptures. 17You
therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned, beware that you are not carried
away with the error of the lawless and lose your own stability. 18But
grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be
the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
3. How does the Holy Spirit help us understand and be ready for
the coming of the Lord?
2 Thessalonians 2:1-17
As
to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him,
we beg you, brothers and sisters, 2not
to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by
letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already
here.3Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will
not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for
destruction. 4He
opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so
that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. 5Do
you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? 6And
you know what is now restraining him, so that he may be revealed when his time
comes. 7For
the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but only until the one who now
restrains it is removed. 8And
then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will destroy with the breath of his mouth,
annihilating him by the manifestation of his coming. 9The
coming of the lawless one is apparent in the working of Satan, who uses all
power, signs, lying wonders, 10and
every kind of wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they
refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11For
this reason God sends them a powerful delusion, leading them to believe what is
false, 12so
that all who have not believed the truth but took pleasure in unrighteousness
will be condemned. 13 But
we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sistersbeloved by the
Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification
by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14For
this purpose he called you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of
our Lord Jesus Christ.15So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the
traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our
letter. 16 Now may our Lord Jesus
Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us
eternal comfort and good hope,17comfort
your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word.
James 5:7-12
Be
patient, therefore, beloved, until
the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth,
being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. 8You
also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is
near. 9Beloved, do not grumble against one another, so
that you may not be judged. See, the Judge is standing at the doors! 10As
an example of suffering and patience, beloved, take the prophets who spoke in the
name of the Lord. 11Indeed
we call blessed those who showed endurance. You have heard of the endurance of
Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate
and merciful. 12 Above
all, my beloved, do not swear,
either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your ‘Yes’ be yes
and your ‘No’ be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.
2 Peter 1:3-11, 16-21
His
divine power has given us everything needed for life and godliness, through the
knowledge of him who called us by his
own glory and goodness. 4Thus
he has given us, through these things, his precious and very great promises, so
that through them you may escape from the corruption that is in the world
because of lust, and may become participants in the divine nature. 5For
this very reason, you must make every effort to support your faith with
goodness, and goodness with knowledge, 6and
knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and endurance
with godliness, 7and
godliness with mutual affection,
and mutual affection with love. 8For
if these things are yours and are increasing among you, they keep you from
being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9For
anyone who lacks these things is short-sighted and blind, and is forgetful of
the cleansing of past sins. 10Therefore,
brothers and sisters, be all the
more eager to confirm your call and election, for if you do this, you will
never stumble. 11For
in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus
Christ will be richly provided for you. 16 For
we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power
and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his
majesty. 17For
he received honour and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed
to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, ‘This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’ 18We
ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy
mountain. 19 So we have the prophetic
message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a
lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in
your hearts. 20First
of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of
one’s own interpretation, 21because
no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit
spoke from God.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
Christ Himself
made it clear in the Scriptures that He will come again. Let us not worry about how He will pull this
off but rather be alert to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Closing Prayer (Collect for 1st Sunday of Advent)
Almighty God,
give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and put on the armour of
light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came
to us in great humility, that on the last day, when he shall come again in his
glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life
immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one
God, now and for ever. Amen.
