Hymn: God is
Working His Purpose Out
Theme: The Day is
Near
Topic: The
Righteous Judge
Reading: Isaiah
11:1-10
A
shoot shall come out from the stock of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of
his roots. 2 The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the
spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the
spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. 3 His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He
shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears
hear; 4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide
with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod
of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. 5 Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and
faithfulness the belt around his loins. 6 The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie
down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little
child shall lead them. 7 The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down
together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8 The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and
the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder’s den. 9 They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for
the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. 10 On that day
the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall
inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.
Introduction
We are continuing
on studies focusing on the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. As discussed in previous studies, although
some people do not believe that this event will take place, or have other
interpretations of the blessed hope, the Scripture clearly indicated that it
will occur, and as described in the word of God. The Bible also addressed the era of doubting,
saying that the time will come when scoffers will be asking where the promise
of the Lord’s coming is. Christ
mentioned in several parts of the gospel that He will die (Crucifixion), rise
on the third day (Resurrection), return to the Father (Ascension), then the Holy
Spirit will be sent (Pentecost), and that He will come again to take all who
believe in Him (Parousia/Advent).
Although some of the details of His second coming are difficult to
comprehend, His mission is clearly defined: to judge the living and the dead. Christ- the Righteous Judge- is coming again
and all eyes will behold Him. Will you
be ready?
Questions/Discussion
1. Discuss some of
the events described in the Scripture regarding the Lord’s second coming and
the lessons thereof.
Matthew 24:3-35
When
he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately,
saying, ‘Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign of your coming
and of the end of the age?’ 4Jesus answered
them, ‘Beware that no one leads you astray. 5For many will come
in my name, saying, “I am the Messiah!” and
they will lead many astray. 6And you will hear
of wars and rumours of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for this must take
place, but the end is not yet. 7For nation will
rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be faminesand
earthquakes in various places: 8all this is but
the beginning of the birth pangs. 9 ‘Then they
will hand you over to be tortured and will put you to death, and you will be
hated by all nations because of my name. 10Then many will
fall away, and they will betray
one another and hate one another.11And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12And because of the
increase of lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold.13But anyone who
endures to the end will be saved. 14And this good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed
throughout the world, as a testimony to all the nations; and then the end will
come. 15 ‘So when you see the desolating sacrilege standing in the
holy place, as was spoken of by the prophet Daniel (let the reader understand),16then those in
Judea must flee to the mountains; 17someone on the
housetop must not go down to take what is in the house; 18someone in the
field must not turn back to get a coat. 19Woe to those who are
pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days! 20Pray that your
flight may not be in winter or on a sabbath. 21For at that time
there will be great suffering, such as has not been from the beginning of the
world until now, no, and never will be. 22And if those days
had not been cut short, no one would be saved; but for the sake of the elect
those days will be cut short. 23Then if anyone
says to you, “Look! Here is the Messiah!” or
“There he is!”—do not believe it. 24For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and
produce great signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. 25Take note, I have
told you beforehand. 26So, if they say to
you, “Look! He is in the wilderness”, do not go out. If they say, “Look! He is
in the inner rooms”, do not believe it. 27For as the
lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the
coming of the Son of Man.28Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather. 29 ‘Immediately
after the suffering of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon
will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the
powers of heaven will be shaken. 30Then the sign of
the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will
mourn, and they will see “the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven” with
power and great glory. 31And he will send
out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from
the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.32 ‘From the
fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth
its leaves, you know that summer is near. 33So also, when you
see all these things, you know that he is
near, at the very gates. 34Truly I tell you,
this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. 35Heaven and earth
will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
Romans 15:4-13
For
whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by
steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. 5May the God of steadfastness and
encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with
Christ Jesus, 6so that together
you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Welcome one
another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. 8For I tell you that Christ has become
a servant of the circumcised on behalf of the truth of God in order that he
might confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, 9and in order that the Gentiles might
glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, ‘Therefore I will confess you among the Gentiles, and sing
praises to your name’; 10and again he says,
‘Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people’; 11and again, ‘Praise
the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples praise him’; 12and again Isaiah
says, ‘The root of Jesse shall come, the one who rises to rule
the Gentiles; in him the Gentiles shall hope.’ 13May the God of
hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in
hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
2 Thessalonians
2:1-12
As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being
gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, 2not
to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by
letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already
here.3Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day
will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for
destruction. 4He
opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so
that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. 5Do
you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? 6And
you know what is now restraining him, so that he may be revealed when his time
comes. 7For
the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but only until the one who now
restrains it is removed. 8And
then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will destroy with the breath of his mouth,
annihilating him by the manifestation of his coming. 9The
coming of the lawless one is apparent in the working of Satan, who uses all
power, signs, lying wonders, 10and
every kind of wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they
refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11For
this reason God sends them a powerful delusion, leading them to believe what is
false, 12so
that all who have not believed the truth but took pleasure in unrighteousness
will be condemned.
2. What are the
lessons for us in Matthew 3:1-12 regarding the Lord’s second coming?
Matthew 3:1-12
In
those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, 2‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven
has come near.’3This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said,
‘The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.” ’ 4Now John wore clothing of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, 6and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 7 But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8Bear fruit worthy of repentance. 9Do not presume to say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our ancestor”; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 10Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 ‘I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12His winnowing-fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing-floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.’
Acts 1:4-14
While
staying with them, he ordered
them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. ‘This’,
he said, ‘is what you have heard from me; 5for John baptized
with water, but you will be baptized with the
Holy Spirit not many days from now.’ 6 So when they
had come together, they asked him, ‘Lord, is this the time when you will
restore the kingdom to Israel?’ 7He replied, ‘It is
not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own
authority. 8But you will
receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the
earth.’ 9When he had said
this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of
their sight.10While he was going and they were gazing up towards heaven,
suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. 11They said, ‘Men of
Galilee, why do you stand looking up towards heaven? This Jesus, who has been
taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into
heaven.’ 12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called
Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away. 13When they had
entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying,
Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and
Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14All these were
constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women,
including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.
3. Discuss some of
the differences between the first and second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ
and the lessons thereof.
Isaiah 53:1-12
Who has believed what we have heard? And
to whom has the arm of the Lord been
revealed? 2 For he grew up before him like a young plant, and
like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at
him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3 He was despised
and rejected by others; a man of suffering and acquainted with
infirmity; and as one from whom others hide their faces he was despised,
and we held him of no account. 4 Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our
diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and
afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed
for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by
his bruises we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all
turned to our own way, and the Lord has
laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was
oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb
that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is
silent, so he did not open his mouth. 8 By a perversion
of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future? For he
was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of
my people. 9 They made his grave with the wicked and his
tomb with the rich, although he had done no violence, and there was
no deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him with pain. When you make his life an
offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days; through
him the will of the Lord shall
prosper. 11 Out of his anguish he shall see light; he shall find
satisfaction through his knowledge. The righteous one, my servant, shall
make many righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will
allot him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the
strong; because he poured out himself to death, and was numbered with the
transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the
transgressors.
Acts 17:24-34
The
God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and
earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, 25nor is he served
by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all
mortals life and breath and all things. 26From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the
whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of
the places where they would live, 27so that they would
search for God and perhaps grope
for him and find him—though indeed he is not far from each one of us.28For “In him we
live and move and have our being”; as even some of your own poets have said, “For
we too are his offspring.” 29Since we are God’s
offspring, we ought not to think that the deity is like gold, or silver, or
stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of mortals. 30While God has
overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere
to repent,31because he has fixed a day on which he will have the world
judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has
given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.’ 32 When they
heard of the resurrection of the dead, some scoffed; but others said, ‘We will
hear you again about this.’ 33At that point Paul
left them. 34But some of them
joined him and became believers, including Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman
named Damaris, and others with them.
1 Peter 4:1-19
Since
therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm
yourselves also with the same intention (for whoever has suffered in the flesh
has finished with sin), 2so as to live for
the rest of your earthly life no
longer by human desires but by the will of God. 3You have already spent enough time in
doing what the Gentiles like to do, living in licentiousness, passions,
drunkenness, revels, carousing, and lawless idolatry. 4They are surprised that you no longer
join them in the same excesses of dissipation, and so they blaspheme. 5But they will have to give an account
to him who stands ready to judge the living and the dead. 6For this is the reason the gospel was
proclaimed even to the dead, so that, though they had been judged in the flesh
as everyone is judged, they might live in the spirit as God does. 7 The end of
all things is near; therefore be
serious and discipline yourselves for the sake of your prayers. 8Above all, maintain constant love for
one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. 9Be hospitable to one another without
complaining. 10Like good stewards
of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has
received. 11Whoever speaks
must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so
with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things
through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power for ever and ever.
Amen. 12 Beloved, do
not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test
you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13But rejoice in so
far as you are sharing Christ’s sufferings, so that you may also be glad and
shout for joy when his glory is revealed.14If you are reviled
for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory, which is the Spirit of God, is resting
on you. 15But let none of
you suffer as a murderer, a thief, a criminal, or even as a mischief-maker. 16Yet if any of you
suffers as a Christian, do not consider it a disgrace, but glorify God because
you bear this name.17For the time has come for judgement to begin with the household
of God; if it begins with us, what will be the end for those who do not obey
the gospel of God? 18And ‘If it is hard
for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly
and the sinners?’ 19Therefore, let
those suffering in accordance with God’s will entrust themselves to a faithful
Creator, while continuing to do good.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
Christ is coming
again to judge the living and the dead; may He keep us ready through the power
of the Holy Spirit.
Closing Prayer
(Collect for 2nd Sunday of Advent)
Almighty God, who
sent your servant John the Baptist to prepare your people to welcome the
Messiah, inspire us, the ministers and stewards of your truth, to turn our
disobedient hearts to you, that when the Christ shall come again to be our
judge, we may stand with confidence before his glory; who is alive and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
