Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty
Holy, holy,
holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity!
Holy, holy,
holy! All the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Which wert, and art, and evermore shall be.
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Which wert, and art, and evermore shall be.
Holy, holy,
holy! Though the darkness hide Thee,
Though our sinful human gaze thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.
Though our sinful human gaze thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.
Holy, holy,
holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy; merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessèd Trinity!
All Thy works shall praise Thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy; merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessèd Trinity!

Topic: Christ, Ordained by God
|
Reading: Acts 10:34-43
Then Peter began to speak to them: ‘I truly understand that
God shows no partiality, 35but in every nation anyone who fears him and does
what is right is acceptable to him. 36You know the message he sent to the people of
Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. 37That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee
after the baptism that John announced: 38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit
and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed
by the devil, for God was with him. 39We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea
and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; 40but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to
appear, 41not to all the people but to us who were chosen by
God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that
he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. 43All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes
in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.’
Introduction
The Baptism of
Jesus Christ was a remarkable event.
John the Baptist initially objected to baptizing Christ, however, the
Lord persuaded him to go ahead in order to fulfill all righteousness. After the baptism of the Lord, the Holy
Spirit descended upon Him in the form of a dove, and the voice of God was heard
from Heaven, confirming that Jesus is the chosen Saviour of the world. There are several lessons for us in the
anointing of Christ following His Baptism, and we shall discuss as many of them
as possible. Although sent by God,
Christ the Creator humbled Himself to be baptized by His creature, John the
Baptist. Jesus did not rush into His
ministry of declaring the gospel, and sacrificial death; He was first baptized
and then filled with the anointing of the Holy Spirit and power from God; He
also prayed regularly to His Father during Hs ministry on earth. Christ made regular prayer to God an integral
part of His life. The same power that
anointed Christ is still available to us today.
If we seek God in humility, repentance, and faith, He will forgive our
sins, and fill us with His grace, Holy Spirit and power. Scripture encourages us to pray to God on a
regular basis, just as Christ did.
Questions/Discussion
1. Why did Christ insist on being baptized by John the Baptist?
Matthew 3:13-17; 5:17-20
Then
Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14John
would have prevented him, saying, ‘I need to be baptized by you, and do you
come to me?’ 15But
Jesus answered him, ‘Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to
fulfil all righteousness.’ Then he consented. 16And
when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the
heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove
and alighting on him. 17And
a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’
2. What are the lessons for us in Matthew 3:13-17 regarding the
Baptism of Jesus Christ?
2 Chronicles 7:11-15
Isaiah 42:1-9
Here
is my servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen, in whom my soul delights;
I have put my spirit upon him;
he will bring forth justice to the nations.
2 He will not cry or lift up his voice,
or make it heard in the street;
3 a bruised reed he will not break,
and a dimly burning wick he will not quench;
he will faithfully bring forth justice.
4 He will not grow faint or be crushed
until he has established justice in the earth;
and the coastlands wait for his teaching.
my chosen, in whom my soul delights;
I have put my spirit upon him;
he will bring forth justice to the nations.
2 He will not cry or lift up his voice,
or make it heard in the street;
3 a bruised reed he will not break,
and a dimly burning wick he will not quench;
he will faithfully bring forth justice.
4 He will not grow faint or be crushed
until he has established justice in the earth;
and the coastlands wait for his teaching.
who created the heavens and stretched them out,
who spread out the earth and what comes from it,
who gives breath to the people upon it
and spirit to those who
6 I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness,
I have taken you by the hand and kept you;
I have given you as a covenant to the people,
a light to the nations,
7 to open the eyes that are blind,
to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,
from the prison those who sit in darkness.
8 I am the Lord, that is my name;
my glory I give to no other,
nor my praise to idols.
9 See, the former things have come to pass,
and new things I now declare;
before they spring forth,
I tell you of them.
James 4:1-10
Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come
from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you?2You want something and do not have it; so you
commit murder. And you covet something and cannot obtain it; so
you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order
to spend what you get on your pleasures. 4Adulterers! Do you not know that friendship with
the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the
world becomes an enemy of God. 5Or do you suppose that it is for nothing that the
scripture says, ‘God yearns jealously for the spirit that
he has made to dwell in us’? 6But he gives all the more grace; therefore it says,
‘God opposes the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.’
7Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the
devil, and he will flee from you. 8Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.
Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.9Lament and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be
turned into mourning and your joy into dejection. 10Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
3. How do we emulate the prayer life of Christ? Discuss the benefits.
1 Samuel 30:1-8, 16-20
Now when David and his men came
to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had made a raid on the Negeb and on
Ziklag. They had attacked Ziklag, burned it down, 2and taken captive the women and
allwho were in it, both small and great; they killed none of them, but carried
them off, and went on their way. 3When David and his men came to
the city, they found it burnt down, and their wives and sons and daughters
taken captive. 4Then David and the people who
were with him raised their voices and wept, until they had no more strength to
weep. 5David’s two wives also had been
taken captive, Ahinoam of Jezreel, and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel. 6David was in great danger; for
the people spoke of stoning him, because all the people were bitter in spirit
for their sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God. 7 David said to the priest
Abiathar son of Ahimelech, ‘Bring me the ephod.’ So Abiathar brought the ephod
to David. 8David inquired of theLord, ‘Shall I pursue this band? Shall I
overtake them?’ He answered him, ‘Pursue; for you shall surely overtake and
shall surely rescue.’ 16 When he had taken him
down, they were spread out all over the ground, eating and drinking and
dancing, because of the great amount of spoil they had taken from the land of
the Philistines and from the land of Judah. 17David attacked them from
twilight until the evening of the next day. Not one of them escaped, except
four hundred young men, who mounted camels and fled. 18David recovered all that the
Amalekites had taken; and David rescued his two wives. 19Nothing was missing, whether
small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything that had been taken; David
brought back everything. 20David also captured all the
flocks and herds, which were driven ahead of the other cattle; people said,
‘This is David’s spoil.’
Matthew 7:7-12
‘Ask,
and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door
will be opened for you. 8For
everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone
who knocks, the door will be opened. 9Is
there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone? 10Or
if the child asks for a fish, will give a snake? 11If
you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much
more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! 12 ‘In everything do to others as you would have
them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets.
Ephesians 6:10-18
1 Thessalonians 5:16-24

fellowship with us daily; may we humble ourselves before Him always, that He
may fill us with His grace and Spirit.
Closing Prayer (Collect for the
Baptism of the Lord)
Eternal Father,
who at the
baptism of Jesus
revealed him to
be your Son,
anointing him
with the Holy Spirit,
keep your
children, born of water and the Spirit,
faithful to
their calling;
through Jesus
Christ our Lord,
who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and for
ever. Amen.
