Corinthians 1:10-18
Now I
appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by
the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you should be in agreement and
that there should be no divisions among you, but that you should be united in
the same mind and the same purpose. 11For it has been
reported to me by Chloe’s people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers
and sisters. 12What I mean is
that each of you says, ‘I belong to Paul’, or ‘I belong to Apollos’, or ‘I
belong to Cephas’, or ‘I belong to Christ.’ 13Has Christ been
divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14I thank God that I baptized none of you except
Crispus and Gaius, 15so that no one can
say that you were baptized in my name. 16(I did baptize
also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized
anyone else.) 17For Christ did not
send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so
that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. 18 For the
message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us
who are being saved it is the power of God.
Introduction
The cross of Christ
has become for Christians, a reminder of the great sacrifice of our Lord and
Saviour Jesus Christ. Although there are
several depictions of the cross of Christ, for example with Christ on or not on
it, the focus of our discussion will be on the overarching spiritual
connotations of the cross of Christ. As
of the time of Christ’s crucifixion, the cross was regarded as one of the most
shameful and painful means of capital punishment; somewhat similar to
relatively modern day death by hanging or firing squad. Hence, one can argue that Christ (following
false accusations by His fellow Jews) was not the first person to die on the
cross in the hands of Roman soldiers.
What has made the cross of Christ a symbol of indescribable proportion
is the transaction that occurred when He was crucified on it. Through the shedding of blood and death of
Jesus Christ on the cross, the sins of the whole world were atoned for. He paid the price for our redemption on the
cross, reconciling us to God; that is the power, mystery, and significance of
the cross of Christ.
Questions/Discussion
1. Discuss your
understanding of the cross of Christ.
1 Corinthians
1:19-31
For it is written,
‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’
‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’
20Where is the one
who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God
made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For since, in the
wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through
the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. 22For Jews demand
signs and Greeks desire wisdom, 23but we proclaim
Christ crucified, a stumbling-block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those who
are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of
God. 25For God’s
foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than
human strength. 26 Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human
standards, not many were
powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose what
is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world
to shame the strong; 28God chose what is
low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things
that are, 29so that no one might boast in the presence of God. 30He is the source
of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and
righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31in order that, as
it is written, ‘Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.’
Ephesians 2:11-22
So then, remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called
‘the uncircumcision’ by those who are called ‘the circumcision’—a physical
circumcision made in the flesh by human hands— 12remember that you were at that time without
Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the
covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off
have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both
groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility
between us. 15He has
abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, so that he might create
in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, 16and might reconcile both groups to God in one bodythrough the cross, thus putting to death that
hostility through it. 17So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were
far off and peace to those who were near; 18for
through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19So then you are no longer strangers and aliens,
but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, 20built upon the foundation of the apostles and
prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. 21In him
the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the
Lord; 22in
whom you also are built together spiritually into
a dwelling-place for God.
Colossians 2:9-15
For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10and you have come to fullness in him, who is the
head of every ruler and authority.11In him also you were circumcised with a spiritual
circumcision, by putting off the body of the flesh in the
circumcision of Christ; 12when
you were buried with him in baptism, you were also raised with him through
faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. 13And when you were dead in trespasses and the
uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive
together with him, when he forgave us all our trespasses, 14erasing the record that stood against us with its
legal demands. He set this aside, nailing it to the cross. 15He disarmed the
rulers and authorities and made a public example of them, triumphing over them
in it.
2. What are the
lessons for us in Matthew 4:12-23 regarding the cross of Christ?
Isaiah 9:1-4
But there will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In
the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of
Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the
land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. 2 The people who walked in darkness have seen
a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness—on them
light has shined. 3 You
have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they
rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as
people exult when dividing plunder. 4 For
the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the
rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.
Matthew 4:12-23,
16:24-27
Now
when Jesus heard that John had
been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. 13He left Nazareth
and made his home in Capernaum by the lake, in the territory of Zebulun and
Naphtali, 14so that what had
been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: 15 ‘Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea,
across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—16 the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and
for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.’ 17From that time
Jesus began to proclaim, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 18 As he walked
by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and
Andrew his brother, casting a net into the lake—for they were fishermen. 19And he said to
them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.’ 20Immediately they
left their nets and followed him. 21As he went from
there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in
the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. 22Immediately they
left the boat and their father, and followed him. 23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in
their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every
disease and every sickness among the people.
16:24-27 Then
Jesus told his disciples, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny
themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25For those who want to save their life will lose it, and
those who lose their life for my sake will find it. 26For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world
but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life? 27 ‘For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in
the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been
done.
3. How do we apply
the power of the cross of Christ in our lives? Discuss practical examples.
Psalm 27:1, 5-13
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
5 For he will hide
me in his shelter
in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
he will set me high on a rock.
in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
he will set me high on a rock.
6 Now my head is
lifted up
above my enemies all around me,
and I will offer in his tent
sacrifices with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make melody to the Lord.
above my enemies all around me,
and I will offer in his tent
sacrifices with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make melody to the Lord.
7 Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud,
be gracious to me and answer me!
be gracious to me and answer me!
8 ‘Come,’ my heart
says, ‘seek his face!’
Your face, Lord, do I seek.
9 Do not hide your face from me.
Your face, Lord, do I seek.
9 Do not hide your face from me.
Do not turn your servant away in anger,
you who have been my help.
Do not cast me off, do not forsake me,
O God of my salvation!
10 If my father and mother forsake me,
the Lord will take me up.
you who have been my help.
Do not cast me off, do not forsake me,
O God of my salvation!
10 If my father and mother forsake me,
the Lord will take me up.
11 Teach me your
way, O Lord,
and lead me on a level path
because of my enemies.
12 Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries,
for false witnesses have risen against me,
and they are breathing out violence.
and lead me on a level path
because of my enemies.
12 Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries,
for false witnesses have risen against me,
and they are breathing out violence.
13 I believe that I
shall see the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living.
in the land of the living.
Colossians 3:1-17
So if
you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ
is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on
things that are above, not on things that are on earth, 3for you have died, and your life is
hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ who is
your life is revealed, then you
also will be revealed with him in glory. 5 Put to
death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion,
evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). 6On account of
these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient.7These are the ways
you also once followed, when you were living that life. 8But now you must get rid of all such
things—anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth. 9Do not lie to one another, seeing
that you have stripped off the old self with its practices10and have clothed
yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to
the image of its creator. 11In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew,
circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ
is all and in all! 12 As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves
with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. 13Bear with one
another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other;
just as the Lord has forgiven
you, so you also must forgive.14Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything
together in perfect harmony. 15And let the peace
of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body.
And be thankful. 16Let the word of
Christ dwell in you richly; teach
and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing
psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. 17And whatever you
do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks
to God the Father through him.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
The cross of Christ
is a reminder that we have been redeemed, and at a great price. A precious reminder that Christ bore our sins
on the cross, reconciling us to God.
Closing Prayer (Collect for the 3rd
Sunday after Epiphany)
Almighty God, by
grace alone you call us and accept us in your service. Strengthen us by your Spirit, and make us
worthy of your call; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
