Theme:
The Prophetic Message
Topic:
A New Commandment
Reading:
John 13:31b-35
Jesus said, ‘Now the Son of Man has been
glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 32If God has been glorified in him, God
will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once.33Little children, I am with you only a little
longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you,
“Where I am going, you cannot come.” 34I give you a new commandment, that you love one
another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.35By this everyone will know that you are my
disciples, if you have love for one another.’
Introduction
At
the heart of the prophetic message is love: God loved the world so much that He
gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but
have eternal life. God first loved us, while
we were yet sinners, and has commanded us through His Son Jesus Christ to love
one another. The Scripture describes God
as love, and that whoever is of God will demonstrate love to others. Christ died for us, and has mandated us to
die to ourselves through living loving lives.
When we show love to God and the people in our lives, we fulfill not
just the New Commandment, but the Ten Commandments as well. This is because the later depends solely on
love. Sometimes it may be difficult, and
almost impossible to love; however, through the power of the Holy Spirit, we
will love at all times. God will not
require love from us had He not sacrificed His Son on the Cross to save and set
us free.
Questions/Discussion
1.
Why did Christ give us the New Commandment?
1
John 4:7-21
Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God;
everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8Whoever
does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9God’s
love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so
that we might live through him. 10In
this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be
the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11Beloved,
since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. 12No
one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is
perfected in us. 13 By
this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his
Spirit. 14And
we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Saviour of
the world. 15God
abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in
God. 16So
we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those
who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. 17Love
has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of
judgement, because as he is, so are we in this world. 18There
is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with
punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. 19We
love because he first loved us. 20Those
who say, ‘I love God’, and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a
brother or sister whom they have
seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. 21The
commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their
brothers and sisters also.
2.
What are the lessons for us in John 12:20-36 regarding love?
John
12:20-36
Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some
Greeks. 21They
came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we
wish to see Jesus.’ 22Philip
went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23Jesus
answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24Very
truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it
remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25Those
who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will
keep it for eternal life. 26Whoever
serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also.
Whoever serves me, the Father will honour. 27 ‘Now
my soul is troubled. And what should I say—“Father, save me from this hour”?
No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour.28Father,
glorify your name.’ Then a voice came from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and I
will glorify it again.’ 29The
crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, ‘An
angel has spoken to him.’ 30Jesus
answered, ‘This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. 31Now
is the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. 32And
I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’ 33He
said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. 34The
crowd answered him, ‘We have heard from the law that the Messiah remains for ever. How can you say that
the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?’ 35Jesus
said to them, ‘The light is with you for a little longer. Walk while you have
the light, so that the darkness may not overtake you. If you walk in the
darkness, you do not know where you are going. 36While
you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of
light.’ After Jesus had said this, he departed and hid from them.
Matthew
16:24-27
Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If any want to become my
followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25For
those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life
for my sake will find it. 26For
what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life?
Or what will they give in return for their life? 27 ‘For
the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then
he will repay everyone for what has been done.

John 3:16-24
We
know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down
our lives for one another. 17How
does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or
sister in need and yet refuses
help? 18 Little
children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. 19And
by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts
before him 20whenever
our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows
everything. 21Beloved,
if our hearts do not condemn us, we have boldness before God; 22and
we receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commandments and do
what pleases him. 23 And
this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus
Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24All
who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them. And by this we
know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us.
3.
Discuss some of the challenges to loving God and the people in our lives, and
how to overcome them.
Matthew
5:38-48
‘You have heard that it was said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth
for a tooth.” 39But
I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right
cheek, turn the other also; 40and
if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; 41and
if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. 42Give
to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow
from you. 43 ‘You
have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbour and hate your
enemy.” 44But
I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45so
that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on
the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the
unrighteous. 46For
if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the
tax-collectors do the same? 47And
if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what
more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48Be
perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
John
12:1-11
Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of
Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 2There
they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the
table with him. 3Mary
took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and
wiped them with her hair. The
house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4But
Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him),
said, 5‘Why
was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?’ 6(He
said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he
kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) 7Jesus
said, ‘Leave her alone. She bought it so
that she might keep it for the day of my burial. 8You
always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.’ 9 When
the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came not only
because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10So
the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death as well, 11since
it was on account of him that many of the Jews were deserting and were
believing in Jesus.
John
13:21-32
After saying this Jesus was troubled in spirit, and declared,
‘Very truly, I tell you, one of you will betray me.’ 22The
disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he was speaking. 23One
of his disciples—the one whom Jesus loved—was reclining next to him; 24Simon
Peter therefore motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. 25So
while reclining next to Jesus, he asked him, ‘Lord, who is it?’ 26Jesus
answered, ‘It is the one to whom I give this piece of bread when I have dipped
it in the dish.’ So when he had
dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot. 27After
he received the piece of bread, Satan
entered into him. Jesus said to him, ‘Do quickly what you are going to do.’ 28Now
no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29Some
thought that, because Judas had the common purse, Jesus was telling him, ‘Buy
what we need for the festival’; or, that he should give something to the poor. 30So,
after receiving the piece of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night. 31 When he had gone out, Jesus
said, ‘Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in
him. 32If
God has been glorified in him, God
will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
God has
commanded us to love, as He first loved us.
Closing
Prayer (Collect
for Palm Sunday)
Almighty
and everliving God, in tender love for all our human race you sent your Son our
Saviour Jesus Christ to take our flesh and suffer death upon a cruel cross. May
we follow the example of his great humility, and share in the glory of his
resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
